Shakedown, 1979 Cool kids never have the time On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet June bug skipping like a stone With the headlights pointed at the dawn We were sure we'd never see an end to it all And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust, I guess forgotten and absorbed to the Earth below Double-cross the vacant and the bored They're not sure just what we have in store Morphine city slippin' dues down to see That we don't even care as restless as we are We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts And poured cement Lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we'd go Beneath the sound of hope Justine never knew the rules Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls No apologies ever need be made I know you better than you fake it to see That we don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust, I guess forgotten and absorbed to the Earth below The street heats the urgency of now As you see there's no one around
I was 17 in 1979 and this song captures the mood and feeling of being young and rebellious. God, I miss my youth. But I’m grateful for those great times. Sooo much fun. Gotta enjoy your youth for as long as you can.
I agree. By the way, do you know who the other blonde male guitar player is? I looked through the comment section but it seems some people think it's Jimmy Chamberlain but other people think it's someone else? Lol
I was 15 in 1979 and lived in a small town where there were just 3 friends. This was me. I’m turning 60 in a few weeks. I was 28 when I first heard this masterpiece on the radio
Yeah! I love how he sings "we/I don't even care" and "where our bones go" and the song in general. Shame he didn't sing exactly like this on the studio version.
He said in interview (I can't remember where it was) that he got annoyed and didn't like her playing as he felt she was too busy and audible for his music (Probably one of the reasons he didn't let her write the basslinea for Machina as well) and he felt that is took the attention from the guitars. I for one think that her playing was for perfect for the Pumpkins and it added a freshness and new life to old songs. But Billy is Billy he has never really understood bass and was probably a bit jealous ;)
My guess is that Melissa and James were just being playful, and playing to the crowd. Probably isn't any real meaning behind their gesture's, unless it's an inside joke between band members.
@****** I don't intend to argue with someone who hides himself behind an anonimous account. Go on denying reality guy, D'arcy was fired because she was a drug addict not for her own choice !
i'm watching this on my computer and on my tv through the ps3 and it reminds me of being there and totaly being in the ether of greatness beyond all of this and into the love of the forever
what a beautiful song makes me remember all the good times ive had in my life but at the same time i feel a little bit sad i dont no why, darcy at 0:27, beautiful
Anyone who criticizes Billy's voice in these videos is a) not a Smashing Pumpkins fan, or b) has never seen them live (thus implying (a)). This is Billy Corgan in the raw and part of what makes him such a great artist.
Para Para is a type of structured synchronized group dance popular in Japan. It mainly uses arm movements and is usually done to Eurobeat. I think it was fun how they incorporated it here.
best live version of this song ever
I like the one with Darcy 🙌
100% Agreed.
500% Agree 😅
Shakedown, 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
June bug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust, I guess forgotten and absorbed to the Earth below
Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slippin' dues down to see
That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement
Lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
Beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it to see
That we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust, I guess forgotten and absorbed to the Earth below
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around
Who's the blonde male guitar player? I think I'm confused lol
This brings me back to when life was simple, great, and just an overall amazing time to be alive
FUCKING AMEN! 🙏
agreed and it didn't suck being 29
I was 17 in 1979 and this song captures the mood and feeling of being young and rebellious. God, I miss my youth. But I’m grateful for those great times. Sooo much fun. Gotta enjoy your youth for as long as you can.

I agree. Our 1960s. Just one of the best growing up songs ever!! Thanks Billy and co!
Amen to that, I still feel bad that Darcy left the band she had a lot of potential.
I was 15 in 1979 and lived in a small town where there were just 3 friends.
This was me. I’m turning 60 in a few weeks. I was 28 when I first heard this masterpiece on the radio
Lost my mom a year ago song brings me to tears Luv u mom u up in heaven my angel forever
Even though I’m 59, this song totally captures the rebelliousness of my youth in the 1970s. That feeling of being young, reckless and FREE.
It really does have a 70s vibe to it, not gonna lie, especially when played live. Don't know why exactly but it does.
😢 I NEED THIS ON HD QHD
The intro aswell as the simple melody of this song is absolutely mesmerizing. My favourite Smashing Pumpkins song!
Please dont ever let this version disappear
"Where will our bones rest? too dust I guess forgotten and absorded into the earth below"

Awesome!
Man. The Smashing Pumpkins are so amazing live. Can't get over it.
This is by far my favorite version of this song. Every time I hear it I am inspired and love the Pumpkins even more.
This is the most beautiful performance.
I was 9 years old in 79'. I lived in Illinois and this song just seems to bring all that back- Man we had it so good and we had no idea
Its great to see such a creative reworking of this song, almost better than the studio version. These guys really were at the top of their form here!
2:43 I was really hoping Melissa would come in here with the backing vocals.
Now this is what makes TH-cam great!, something you probabily won`t find elsewhere, total genius , top-one..
I've never heard this live before ... Damn THis is Friggin awesome ... I gotta see them live next time around!!
I love this band! I'm only 13, but I really appreciate all these older, more classic rock/contemperary bands.
And now you’re 20 crazy how time flies
LOVE LOVE LOVE this...looks like they were having a good time, and i love Billy"s tone and his enunciation in it here!!!
i love how they drew out the ending like that. Both awesome and hilarious.
Yeah! I love how he sings "we/I don't even care" and "where our bones go" and the song in general. Shame he didn't sing exactly like this on the studio version.

Awesome song. Brings me back to my teen years carefree living just hanging drinking 40 oz.
one of the great talents in rock mr corgan. great band.
Excellent acoustic sound...love the bass players energy...
Yes, that's right she is Melissa Auf der Maur !!!
And being the jerk Billy is...he slammed her bass playing....but I like it....great energy

I read that interview too some month ago...
However the fact remains he called her to join the SP in place of d'Arcy !

Thanks this song I'm still alive, they change my life and they has been walking next to me since then.
FYI for everyone saying they like the bass player. That stunning example of a HOT woman bassist, is the one and only, Melissa Auf Der Maur.
+Nash1965H You find me totally agreed with you...
My guess is that Melissa and James were just being playful, and playing to the crowd. Probably isn't any real meaning behind their gesture's, unless it's an inside joke between band members.
@outsider10001 It's called "killing time."
Melissa and James became good friends during those tours. Later she invited him to play in her two solo albums.
@****** I don't intend to argue with someone who hides himself behind an anonimous account. Go on denying reality guy, D'arcy was fired because she was a drug addict not for her own choice !
