You just revolutionized the entire history of police training, I mean all these years at the academy studying human character, psyche of the terrorist, fingerprint analysis, all the courses that I've taken in surveillance, hostage negotiation, and criminal psychology, when all I had to do is just drive around the neighborhood, and point my finger at the house and say "THE BAD GUYS ARE IN THERE!""

This movie is a huge satire to action films in general. I remember when my dad and I saw this in theaters. The amount of cameos that are in this movie that Arnold has worked with overtime was just great for me from your Robert Patrick to Sharon Stone great stuff. Even Whiskers the cartoon cat was voiced by Danny Devito.

This movie was years ahead of its time. We weren't ready for all the meta humor and satire. I remember I was in high school and even among the younger crowd the consensus was "This movie sucks but the soundtrack kicks ass." If you watch it now, it's much better.

I even remember Burger King even had a these animation cup things where it had this grid look on it but when you put this sleeve around it and moved it around it would show off a few seconds part of the movie. Well I think that's what it did.

My favourite trick was to have one the gang but a ticket and let us all in via the fire exit. And this was back in the day when two movies were shown for the price of one. In Britain R movies are rated as X films and we did the same as you but hid the toilets (restrooms). The ability to do all these things became easier if it was late into its run weeks later. Sadly in all but the grandest/historical of Cinemas the balcony experience has given way to the 'pack 'em in' multiplex studios. Or even worse turned into snooker/poole places or Wetherspoon pubs etc under the pressure of the VHS player/recorder boom back in the late 1970s into the1980s.

One of the other great things about the movie is the soundtrack. As I recall, Arnold was in the video for the AC/DC song in it, and got to dress up in the Angus Young schoolboy outfit.
I only went into a movie without paying for it once, and it wasn't my idea - I was there with some friends who were friends with an employee at the theater and she just let us in. I had gone fully-prepared to pay for my ticket.

It was about sneaking into multiple shows at the multiplex for me back in the day. Very easy to do on a busy weekend. I couldn't really enjoy seeing more than two movies back to back but a friend of mine really pushed his luck and would try and see four or five - he'll still do it when a lot of horror movies are out at once. Unfortunately for him he was a rather distinctive looking guy who stood out if you were a cinema employee looking around for people sneaking into stuff so he got caught a fair few times but that never stopped him. I'm not sure they bother rousting out sneaks any more unless someone's being really obnoxious about it and taking up someone else's seat or something. The reserved seating thing can be a bit tricky but the key is to NOT argue when someone tells you that the seat you're sitting in is theirs. (I mention it because it seems some people need this pointed out for them.)
Just remembered a film theory professor at college who told us all about how she went to the cinema. Being a lady-person she could carry a large purse without attracting attention and she would bring a couple different shirts to change into in the ladies' room and a hat or scarf or two and a couple pairs of sunglasses. Seemed like a bit too much effort for me, but she clearly enjoyed every minute of it - which was good 'cuz she really didn't like movies that much at all so the sneaking around would have been the object of the exercise.

24:11 I was one of those people when I first saw this in 93 on VHS rental at 11 years old. I didn't understand the meta deconstructive nature of the movie. I liked it for the action but other stuff kinda turned off until rewatched it a few years later and started to understand what it was doing. Now it's one of my Arnold movies.

    #fav line
“Who does the doctor treat ? “
    “Patients “
“look at the sleeve of my jacket… What’s it doing ?”
    “Wearing thin ?”
    “Bingo!”
    “That was a stretch “

Kinda glad this won now based on your reaction. You definitely got more laughs than you would have from Last Boy Scout but now you've seen this you need to see Last Boy Scout soon after just so you can see where something happens that Last Action Hero parodies or satirises.

I watch for Emily's reaction, regardless of whether I am interested in the movie, or not. Please watch 'The Long Kiss Goodnight', also a Shane Black script.

I love all the references, the one liners, the meta jokes and everything, but I think what I love the most is the real world stuff. the only critique i would have is i wished they had gone further with that. maybe a few extra scene of subversion, or realistic action scenes. but overall i agree with most here saying its underrated. i remember all the flack it got originally. glad people have more appreciation for it now.

Don't forget Sharon Stone's cameo from Basic Instinct as they're walking into the police station. This was such an underrated movie, glad you reacted to it!

Have loved the reactions on this channel for a while now, but never clicked faster than when I saw it was to this movie. Might be that I had the sound track as a kid and still rate it highly :p

I saw this movie twice in the theater back in the day and I loved it. I was 11. It was the first Arnold Schwarzenegger I got to see in the theater. This is such an underrated Arnold Schwarzenegger classic.

Speaking of Shane West screenplays and Christmas, I hope "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996) gets a reaction for December. --edit: I meant Shane Black not West.

(I missed "Shane West". It's Black, not West :D)

I know they didn't show the scene but the moment when Arnold throws Leo "the Fart,' off the balcony while everyone is pointing guns at him and he yells "DON'T SHOOT." That scene might be the best acting from Arnold I've ever seen. He legit sounds like he's afraid for his life lol.

This movie is genius! It's sad to know that it didn't do well in the box office because people weren't ready for this type of movie at the time, but it pokes fun at all the best things about 80's action movies. My favorite bit is the not reloading the gun. To this day I watch action movies and shake my head at the fact that they either never reload or shoot a revolver 16 times before they run out of bullets. This movie and John Wick give me such joy just to see someone reload lol.

i was working at a movie theater when this came out, and i appreciated it for what it was immediately. i really enjoyed it. my favorite bit is still the ice cream cone to the back of the bad guy's head. i also agree the pacing hurt the movie a little- it could have been tightened up by about 20 minutes.
