I'm not much of a cardmaker myself, and I don’t think I’ll ever be buying cardmaking supplies. However, your energy and enthusiasm for this art form are absolutely infectious! Your extensive knowledge, remarkable skill, and the stunning creations you share are truly inspiring. Watching your videos is always a highlight of my day-they never fail to brighten it!
The crafting community is a really generous, supportive group of kind, sharing and giving people. Unlike other industries, competition is not paramount but helping others to success is. This spills over from industry leaders into the makers. If ever you do decide to lend your hand to a card or two then share them, you will not only receive the instant gratification that we all get from our creations but the support of the wider community as well. I already do a lot of other things but would not swap out cardmaking for anything. Try it, you might like it!
Love the magic mat! I’ve been using it with my Gemini jr for a couple years. The sandwich is weird….sizzix plate, magic mat, paper, die, Gemini plate. No warping whatsoever. About every 3-6 months I place the magic mats in boiling water to get rid of the lines and paper scraps.
Replay Crew: I love all the cards but the polka dot background with Refined Copper LP is one of my favorites. I am loving how copper is making its way forward more and more. I liked seeing the one awkward die cutting moment. That was hilarious as well as the clean-up of it afterwards. I appreciate you leaving it in! As we say in Craft Roulette: Kiss Your Brain! 💋🧠 Happy Thanksgiving.
I like the magic mats have about 5 of them. When they start warping I put them in the sun and use a different one, I bring the other one in from the sun and use it. I keep going back and forth like that til I can't use them anymore. So far I like them better than the clear plastic ones. They also seem to cut better than the plastic ones. As far as the magnetic one I haven't been able to get one yet.
Simon, I LOVE you! Putting your stamps and dies in those nice packets to help us with storage and organization is genius. I hope you inspire other companies to do the same. I use the same system you use for stamp and die sets; I love that I don't need to worry about having extra storage packets for your products. Thank you. 😍🥰
I really LOVE that Sun Ray stencil. It really draws your eye to the focal point of your card. And that maganic magic mat is going to be a game changer for me. No more fussing with tape!!! Thank you Simon!!!
You have talent ! Simon you continue to be one of my favorites. I am always happy to see a new video from you. BTW...The glass matt with magnets are a game changer. The clean up anything very easily with a water or alcohol. One of my better investments. I own 2, one for me and one for my visiting crafty friends. I also own all of your inks and pastes. You only put out the very best products, Thank you.
I have used the magic mat for quite some time now. I have an electric A4 (Letter) size Couture Creations Go Cut N Emboss with really strong rollers. I replaced one cutting plate but found that there is a slight difference in thickness so I used a cardboard shim and that fixed it. Yes, the mat warps but this is easily fixed by heating it with a heat gun or very very gently with an embossing gun. I like that the mat is washable and all those little fibres that get left behind can be cleared away. I scrubbed mine with a toothbrush after about 6 months of continuous use. It took no time at all really, dried very quickly and cutting was as good as it was when it was new. Hope this helps. Oh, and even with overseas postage on top, it's cheaper than buying new perspex cutting mats which I would have to do more often.
I just bought a second hand CC A4 Go power and emboss to use with bigz dies and their go press and foil, as I struggle with the big shot plus manual rollers now, and the gemini won't work with either. It only came with the white A plate though and I cannot get a reply from CC. is it true that you can use the same plates as Sizzix machines ? I want to get new plates, so I can sell my other two machines with plates included . Can you advise me on the sandwiches needed ? Also have you tried the Craftelier version of the magic mats sold in UK. I really do not want to pay international postage and custom fees for the same product as something sold here . Thanks, Lillia
@@Cre8tiveConnexionsbyLillia Hi. I am in Australia so I can't really help you with where to get the plates except for over here but the B plate is 3/8 inch, nearly 1/4" thick and the C plate is marginally thicker than Sizzix at 3mm or about 1/8in. I feel that Sizzix plates alone with a lot of shims would badly warp too quickly to be viable. I have used a Spellbinder's magic mat instead of the C plate as you cut into the C plate not the thicker B plate, and while it has been mostly successful, it was also slightly thicker than the C plate. You also have to cut facing down rather than up as they recommend. For Bigz dies, use the magic mat with a shim if needed. Search TH-cam for their videos on various sandwiches then substitute what you have.
Thanks, I had assumed the cutting plate was the thicker one. I guess the metal adapter plate is much thinner than the go foil one then. I have a very thin one for the gemini.
@@Cre8tiveConnexionsbyLillia It's physically able to take Bigz dies. Here's a quote from the manual: "To diecut with Bigz metal rule dies you will need to purchase a separate C plate" and the sandwich is shown as: C then die facing up, card then C again. Hope this is more helpful than my last answer - I had to hunt down the manual. Ask your local store to order them in. You won't get an answer from CC as they are wholesalers.
I definitely love that magnetic glass mat, however I loved the blue polka dot card you made. I just received 6 different solar pastes and can’t wait to try these techniques. I need to purchase that stencil set. Loved it!
Oh, that magnetic mat for die cutting is great. I am die cutting quite a lot with my big shot and using tons of Post-Its. Will see if I can get my hands on that magnetic mat.
The glass mat is awesome. Definitely good for it to be magnetic. After all these years, you continue to inspire. Wonderful recommendations. Glitter makes everything better.
Love your demos, the silly Santa card was fun, however I love the dots and the color combo you chose. I have the magic mat, had it for a very long time works great and when it warps you just heat it and it reforms. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
I loved the plaid as well as the polka dot stencil. I love how you incorporate inks and your Astro paste! I hope to use a couple of these ideas on my Christmas cards this year. Thank you so much, Simon!
This was a great and informative video. My favorite card was the blue card with the polka dots (I'm a sucker for polka dots and non-traditional christmas colors)! I just purchased the Glassboard Studio magnetic glass mats and can't wait to get them unboxed. I also have a lot of the other products you recommended. All of your pastes are by far the very best and I love using them.
Hahaha!!! Simon, you never fail to Crack me up! Your Santa die cutting was epic. Thank you for showing the crafting tools. The magnetic glass mat and the storage bins are on my must have list. Always enjoy watching you create your beautiful cards. While I like everything you make, since the Christmas season is almost upon us, I love the shiny ornament card. Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!!
I have been using original magic mat for a year. A couple of months ago I got the magnetic one. I love it! If I have extremely intricate dies I switch to regular plates
I have a small magnetic glass craft mat which I use for matting and layering. I still have the predecessor to the acrylic stamp blocks. They were magnetic blocks. The rubber stamps were the first to be sold on magnetic tape / sheet, instead of wooden blocks. Before clear stamps. A brilliant idea at the time especially for greetings/ sentiments. You got a large one for the big stamps and a small one that you could use for up to 3 lines of words, so you could mix and match from various sets. I use my large one to keep a card flat after using in my Sizzix stamp tool or when wet glue is drying. I like my Altenew 9 x 12 ultra grip mat for working on my non magnetic larger glass mat with my 9 x 12 stencils and suchlike. I struggle to get the cling sheets off my waffle flower one, the largest one they sell. I admit I actually prefer the set of 3 different sized ones, that also come with alignment guides included, from one of those cheap sites. They are just the right degree of stick and I use them happily with inks that stain , and even when applying microfine glitter or perfect pearls powders. They are so cheap to replace, so I keep my expensive ones for projects that are tidier. I do not feel bad because I do invest in good products too, and never buy the stamps or dies that are robbing designers of their royalties. My fave recent buy is the hinge adapter for the Sizzix stamp/stencil platform. I can use it for canvases and art journaling now. I will still invest in the Stampwheel 2 as it has more sections and a larger circle, so both have their pros and cons. I ruined the first Sizzix sticky grid sheet by turning a stamped piece of card I was practicing on, over to the other side and got ink all over it. It also attracts every dust bunny and dog hair. I use the single sided Misti mats over it now. Ithink the rotational stamp platforms are one of the best inventions since the clear stamps themselves. I have been crafting since I was 8, so that is over 40 years and I have so many old stamp sets that will be getting a new lease of life, especially my peg stamps which I finally unmounted from their wooden dowels this week. Can I ask your opinion on the gyro cut knife ?
After watching you use the Altenew sticky mat on other videos, I got one. I love it!!! And I need your plaid builder stamp. I love is the individual stripes are separate so I can mix and match.
To me, the magnetic magic mat is a game changer, but I use it two different ways than you. If I use one mat, I use it to replace my bottom plate and place the dies on it face up (so there is more metal surface connecting to the magnet) and then place my paper and then my plate. My favorite way to cut is to replace both plates with magnetic mats. It glides through my machine easier and I get really clean, tapeless cuts too. Love your stamps and dies!
Similar here, except I use cheaper options like pencil cases or food storage boxes. You can buy 50 rectangular food boxes for the price of one set of those trays.
I have used Magic Mats for several years now. I want to get one of the magnetic mats soon. I use the extended cutting mat so have a bigger surface for cutting. I just recently started using a new extended mat. They are usable on both sides and can be positioned for equal "warping."
I am liking the glass mat especially the magnetic style. And…..the sticky mat looks intriguing. Very cool tools and your inks and pastes are some of my favorite mediums. I need to grab some of those greens. Inspiring and thank you for your honest opinions and demonstrations. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
I have the magnetic mat and love it! That and the Mint Tape are must haves! I'm happy you showed the storage bin from Tonic--I plan to go check it out!
Love the gass matad that it's magnetic too with the magnets. I would love to have it. But I don't have a workable craft room with a large enough table in it or anyway yo store it. Hey just had an idea... put it on the front of my refrigerator. 🤣 Bet that would be a first..May be, there's a will, there's a way...lol
Simon, I have a question about the Ikea drawers and counter top behind you. Do you have those Alex units up on feet or a base under them somehow? What is the height from the floor to the top of the counter? I have the same drawer units but feel the whole counter is too low.
I too have the Platinum 6, and I love the Magic Mat. Having a self-healing cutting mat just feels like a no brainer. I would like to get the Magnetic Mat but has been sold out for quite a while now. Bummer
Another great video! Thank you!!! I love the polka dots w/coppery Lunar Paste background. I do have one question: are you using an overhead light and if so, how do you eliminate the reflection off of the glass mat?
Hi Simon! Love your videos! Just started watching you recently. Would you explain what is the difference between the Better Press (plus hot foiling); as opposed mainly to just a regular die cutting machine? I have a Sizzix Big Shot. Would the Better Press dies fit through that model of die cutting machine? I don't really understand why/how the Better Press is better? Or just different? Thank you
Letterpress plates create intaglio , that is impressed images into paper, with or without ink. The opposite of cameo or raised. Embossing creates both cameo and intaglio, on either side of the cardstock. Debossing actually means to undo embossing by flattening the paper . Think of old fashioned printing presses , like on expensive hammered and linen papers, like an old fashioned typewriter. It makes for incredibly professional documents etc. They are not dies and do not cut. Hotfoil plates do not cut either. They get warm and melt the foil, just like the hotfoil heated pens we used for years, but with better results. Spellbinders sell two separate machines and say you should not use thin dies in them or hotfoil plates on the betterpress. However the original machine by Couture Creations , the Go Press and foil, uses the same machine and plates to both hotfoil and letter press! You can also use other companies plates and thin dies in it as they have a metal adapter plate to stop the dies cutting , or damaging the machine. You may be able to pick one up second hand for less than the cost of just the Betterpress or hotfoil systems Spellbinders sell.
Simon. I like your site. I am interested in cardmaking. One question....I want to use stencils for making cards but I am looking for a non-toxic adhesive to hold the stencils down that I can use indoors. Any suggestions would help. Thank you.
You only need masking tape, place against fabric or clothes to remove excess tack then stick to stencil and cardstock, or use repositionable tape or washi tape. Do same with washi tape as masking tape. Or the sticky maats hold the stencil and card in place with no need for tape at all. You do not want to use regular sticky tape or any adhesive.
A better way to use the magnetic mat is to place the dies cutting side facing up away from the magnetic plate and place the card stock on top of the die with a normal cutting plate on top of that. This way, there is more surface for the die to be held to the magnetic surface. Also, nothing cuts into the magnet and it will last forever.
Thank you for the wonderful video! My favourite one has to be the santa!! He is so cute! When I click on the link of supplies, all I am getting is a blank page.... :(

Hi, Simon. Love the beard. You have a great sense of humor. Good to see. Have a great day.
I don’t think you went too tape happy on the card near the end. It created a beautiful pattern. I loved it.
Simon, I have a question about the Ikea drawers and counter top behind you. Do you have those Alex units up on feet or a base under them somehow? What is the height from the floor to the top of the counter? I have the same drawer units but feel the whole counter is too low.
I've found that the magnetic mat holds the dies more securely if I use it as a base plate and not cut into it.
I’m very tempted by the plaid builder stamp!

Thanks!
I use a die cutting mat from the dollar store instead of a Magic Mat. Works just fine.
The only con with the magnetic mat is that it's not self healing, otherwise... IT'S AWESOME!
Great video! Great time for it, with Black Friday coming! Liked all the cards.
Yes! Love all of the awesome black friday deals coming up. A great time to shop this week. :)
Another great video! Thank you!!! I love the polka dots w/coppery Lunar Paste background. I do have one question: are you using an overhead light and if so, how do you eliminate the reflection off of the glass mat?
Yes! I am using an overhead light and a light in front of me. The overhead light is offest forward a bit to get rid of the reflection. :)

Oh and the Couture Creations go press and foil platform works with the Sizzix bigshot or any machine that takes Sizzix Bigz dies

Totally! I am loving them for that. :)
I need that mat!!
Simon, what do you do with all the cards you make? I never see any hand made cards in the shops.
I love the magnetic mat game changer
I loved them all but the last one (plaid) was my favorite
Yay! Glad you enjoyed the video. :)
I put my dies on the cardstock facing down, then put the magnetic plate/mat on top.
I have a new gift request! Love that glass mat!
