I've spent years trying to understand how to use modes beyond just sequencing the seven notes, starting each mode on the next note in the C Major scale's white keys. This clip has finally cleared up my confusion. Thank you so much.

This site is the best I have come across and made me go back to the piano
At least years of theory has helped me
    Thankyou

Tom, You are such an amazing musician and an equally amazing teacher. You explain the concepts in such a lucid manner that it motivates the student to learn. The Dorian and Mixolydian sounded out of the world when you played those improvisations. Simply Wow! Gratitude to you.

Tom, Loved this lecture. At about 5:30 into the video, Mixolydian mode. Straight up "Sympathy for the Devil". I can hear Mick singing, "Please let me introduce myself." lol Love it. Thanks Tom.

Very much love the relaxed way of approaching piano exercise that you constantly present. Makes me instantly feel more advanced than I actually am 😄. Takes the load off my shoulders that I put there myself a long time ago. Great job, thank you!

I think I've mastered the modes now. I know the Ionian, Doberman, Freezing, Latvian, Myxomatosis, Alien and the Loch Lomond modes.
I'm going to learn Phrygian Dominatrix next. Sounds exciting.

Thank you very much for your very good tutorials and the love for piano that you share with us ... as an 'amateur" and self taught player I really enjoy your tutorials ...
But my question is what is the difference between scales and modes ... I mean I know the minor and the major blues scale and also the pentatonic scale and of course it's very easy to transpose them in any key ... but all of a sudden we speak greek with myxolidian, lydian and blabla ... so what's the difference between a regular scale and those so called "modes" ? ...

I think of it this way:
It's like an alternative key within a key. A scale is simply a reference guide to help you remember what notes are in that key or mode. A mode isn't just 8 notes played by themselves in sequence.
In this video (using the Lydian section as an example), the mode is determined as much by the chords as it is the melody. By having the chord progression emphasise the C major, it highlights how the F# sounds different to the regular (perfect) 4th that you'd normally get in the key of C, and gives it its signature sound.

M for mixolydian, M for magic
I feel it is the easiest mode to improvise in and sound good, maybe because it is the most common in pop and rock and we are really used to its sound. Or there could be some more technical reason

Probably 'cos it's basically the major scale, so it's all happy and familiar sounding, but the flattened dominant 7th, gives it that bluesy rocky feel, rather than the traditional leading tone sound of the major 7th.

Why did you choose that chord progression for the F mixolydian mode?

    • @johnwes8822

What I think is that when using other modes, Triad chords formed from notes in each mode differ from Triad chords of main major key, creating melodies more diverse than those in Ionian mode.
