      If you listen to the banter, Inigo says he would hate to kill Wesley/Roberts because they seem like a decent person. Wesley/Roberts doesn't return the sentiment, but instead says he would hate to die. Inigo takes it as him admitting he will lose. But really it's Wesley saying he refuses to kill Inigo simply because he was hired for a shady task, and that Inigo's heart is pure.

    I like how Inigo isn't unhealthily obsessed with revenge. He has a very business-like attitude about it like it's the most natural thing in the world. He's also doing it for his father.

    I think the part I love best about this scene is that Inigo knows he has to kill the pursuer, but he's a decent enough guy that he'll give him a moment to recuperate. Sure, it stems from a bit of personal pride and a desire to push himself to the limits by challenging people in fair duels, but he even gave the guy his sword to look at.

    Little details really impress me that I didn't notice before. When Wesley inspected Inigo's sword, he handled it with his left hand. I get the impression that he knew Inigo's intentions all along (perhaps he overheard it while climbing the cliffs) and so pretending to be left handed as well. However, Inigo gave away that he is right handed on many occasions: by where his sword hangs, how he draws his sword with his right hand before switching, and so on. The whole time, Wesley is the cleverer man.

    • @Haitchpeasauce
      @Haitchpeasauce 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      And at 5:21 Wesley quick switches to left hand and back to right, and Inigo also then switches to left hand but in a more clumsy way, before trying to use the sword two-handed.

      I'm thinking that, in Europe during those days, horses were trained to expect riders to mount on the left side, because most people are right-handed and would wear a sword's sheath on their left hip (cross-draw). So even left-handed swordsmen would want to keep their sword on their left side, so that when they ride horses, the horse won't be spooked by having the rider try to mount from the wrong side. Also, there may have been a stigma about being left-handed in those days of ignorant superstition, so people would want to appear to be right-handed when out in public.

      DEATH111183 There's more than a few better choreographed fights, also, if you think that this is how actual sword fights went, well sorry to disappoint but this is theatrical sword fighting, if an actual sword fight went this way both of the blades would be rendered dull by the way that they deliberately tried to hit each sword. Oh and don't try to pull a parrying or whatnot card since parrying didn't exist in real life, the closest being the usage of a buckler held close to the hilt in conjunction with the rapier, but even that would attempt to deliberately avoid the rapier.
      So basically, a good fight, definitely, a fun one, obviously, funny banter, Heeelll yeah, the best sword fight ever...
      Ha
      no.

      He was curious as to *why* it was important but the simple answer was all Westley needed to hear to answer that question. After serving on board a pirate ship he had to have learned everyone has a story as to where they are where they are. And it helped Westley form a decision as to what he would be doing. If Inigo was a psychopath who just hated people with that deformity, Westley probably wouldn't have played with him, and would have killed him with no hesitation.

    I imagine that it took many takes for them to do the part where Inigo tosses up his rapier and catches it by the hilt. You can’t just pluck a complex swept guarded hilt out of the sky, your grip would have to avoid all the guard as they close in on the hilt. And where he did catch it was very much not with a very secure grip, which is why Westley’s next pair of strikes were little more than taps to give Inigo time to re affirm his grip.

    The stance he takes at 5:05 is very typical of classic Spanish rapier. It puts as much of the sword between you and your opponent as possible, and the forward arm is protected behind the hilt. As soon as you see or create a line of attack, you step forward leading with the sword and continue past the enemy. Watch a Tango sometime, and imagine it with swords.

      Masked Jackass14 It's based on zorro. They removed the parts they felt that hampered the character.
      On another thought, who the hell invented the cape? It's more of a weakness than a disguise or outfit, unless you need to take a dump and there's no civilization in sight.

    • @maskedjackass149
      @maskedjackass149 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you mean capes in general I think they were often just worn for style because usually only the very rich could afford such clothing.
      If you mean with Zorro he originally wore a cloak and the cape was introduced with the 1920 film The Mark of Zorro and it's been associated with the character ever since with even the original creator of Zorro using that look in his later stories, although in the original film the cape wasn't worn often.
      Of all the cape wearers I've seen I can only think of two that actually do something useful with it.

      Actually, capes were like today's jacket or coat, It was made to put over your cloths (or armor) to protect you from elements and insects. It's cheaper to make than a coat, you don't need to take it off if you are too hot ex: (if you start to fight with a warm coat you may not have time to take it off and have a hard time. ;) ) and is more effective to keep you warm. (like gloves vs mitt) A coat is just more practical in general so the cape went away with time.

    Read the book "As You Wish" by Care Elwes, aka Wesley. The stories are just so incredible. My favorite his his description of how his very first day of pre-production was meeting with the costume designers; he tired on the tights, puffy shirt, boots, and the belt with the sword buckle-and as he looked in the mirror he said "So THIS is how Errol Flynn must have felt!" Such a great quote!

    It's amazing you get to know someone for a short moment before you start to have a sword dual with them and you hold them in the highest respect based on their story from the past. I feel a relationship between Inigo and Wesley from here to the end of the movie.

    I get the impression of the two, Inigo is the better swordsman, but Wesley is the more cunning strategist. The way he won the duel was via confusion and throwing Inigo off, but Inigo remained faster in terms of the actual sword fight, and they were pretty evenly matched when they both switched hands. It's really neat the amount of details you can see in here. Even in the jumping scene. Inigo didn't do a well enough jump cuz he never really trained himself in acrobatics. Wesley, on the other hand, trained to be a pirate. He would be naturally acrobatic, so he had no issue showing off his skill. This is a perfect example of a jack of all trades vs a master of one.

    Wesley is clever when he says "I've never seen it's equal" when addressing Inigo's sword.
    Wesley could have seen far superior swords that completely obliterate this one, but by saying he's never seen its equal, it sounds like praise when really it's intentionally vague.
