Hi everyone. I have struggled with "over the top" and "steep" and hitting the ball right and short for many years. I started to watch Shawn last year. But I joined the premium channel about 1 month ago. The resources there are incredible. As much as his lessons make sense, they are turbo charged in premium. It really is an entirely new experience. Heck, I even love the cutting of the dandelion analogy. Makes me think of the complete swing follow through very differently. What I am more angered by/mistified by is how wrong I have been getting it over the years.

Hi Shawn et al. I'm still in process of changing my setup and swing following Shawn's advice. My regular fade is disappearing but more importantly I now have a set of thoughts to apply to work out what I did wrong (when the fade reappears or I collapse into the shot and I get a straight push). 30 to 50 yards on a regular drive and more trust in the direction with all clubs has been the result. Shawn's advice might not be for everyone but it works for me. It also helps that the 'students' are leftys.
This is so simple to understand and makes perfect sense. Who cares about swing plane? If you can cut grass and the stem and release to target with a nice whip through to target, suddenly golf gets fun again. 😃

Awful front nine (19 over), but finally found the correct sensation in the swing, along with using the chop the dandelion stem and finishing toward the target. Scored +6 on the back nine! Hey Shawn I've been watching you for a couple of years and love your approach to the game. Please can you have a word with Liam from Golf mates in the UK, his over the top swing is driving us all crazy. You could fix him in 3 swings 👍😎
Hi Shawn, Sav, and Mu. This is somewhat off-subject as pertains to this particular video, but I'm wondering if you have done a video or plan on doing one on leg action in the Clement backswing. I realize that it is something that should happen naturally as a result of a centralized turn, but I can never seem to get my backswing to mimic yours or Savanah's. Her backswing at the top, in particular her leg and hip position, appears to be in the absolute perfect position to deliver massive momentum through the swing path. I've tried to study how you guy's bring the forward knee in and what not, but hope to fine tune it a bit. Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks. :)
Hey Dan! On the premium channel, the videos you want to watch are the “weight shift with Savy” which deals with the transition from backswing to downswing regarding the turn that is a major culprit for not finishing the backswing properly. Then see “backswing levitation” and “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with savy” and finally, “feet together back to feet apart” is a huge one! For those who don’t know where to find our premium channel, see www.wisdomingolfpremium.com
Shawn I’ve been following your videos and I’m very pleased with my 7-AW iron striking and results! Smooth , far and nice draw. But my driver & woods are weak & full of slice or hook using the same philosophy. Rather frustrating.
Just means there are a couple short circuits going on on the longer clubs; very common. See “driver speed and smash shawn clement golf wrx” which is a solid driver video.
Another great video Shawn from a fan in Dallas. I recently started watching videos from Tom Saguto and it made me question everything I knew about the modern day golf swing. One plan/two plane aside, if the swing is a circle then it would seem S&T makes sense (am I allowed to say that? = ). Don't we want to get back to the stationary ball with the least amount of mental/physical calculations and do what comes natural? BTW, awesome accomplishment to you and the team for the NBC Golf Academy certification.
Hey Shawn, great video. I never like to look too deep in to swing "mechanics" and love how you teach. I've often had people say I need to tighten my right arm at the top of my back swing, and people advise the towel under the arm drill, I've always refused to do this as I feel it's too restricting. After seeing Savs trail arm at the top of the back swing it's very similar to mine, this is obviously something you don't think needs changing, which is great news for me too 😁 Why do people think I should work on getting my trail arm more compact? Jack nicklaus, freddy couples, bubba and many more sport a flying elbow (I know these guys are exceptions). But I've always been one to feel like you've gotta let your body flow how it wants to flow, I wouldn't tell you to throw the ball a certain way, you'd just do it...... Look forward to reading your response
An you hear the choir singing?? Please tell them all to leave you the heck alone!!! Hey Shawn, I watch your videos a lot. I think you are the best golf instructor on TH-cam! Keep up the great work! I have been trying my hardest to follow all the instructions you talk about in your videos but despite my efforts, I still seem to be an inconsistent ball striker and still come over the top sometimes. Watching Sav, Munashe, and your swing, I noticed that your lead arm is a little bit bent at the top of the backswing. My lead arm is so locked, it is hyper extended at the top of my swing because I have double jointed elbows. Could this be negatively effecting my swing by adding tension or something? Thanks
Hey Chad! Ahh dude, you are so NOT DEFECTIVE! One of the pros that was at my club when I was a junior had the same elbows and his swing looked so spectacular; we all stopped to watch it when he practiced! Then you have Calvin Peete who is in the hall of fame and had the lead elbow broken into a bent position as a child and was the most accurate driver of the ball of all time! Back to your consistency issue: when you make an over the top swing, rewind back to your address position and tell me. What was the last thing going through your mind at address just before you swung? What were you getting ready to do?
@@golflessons In my address position, I have my head "behind' the ball" like you suggest, I have a really strong grip that feels comfortable to me, and I try to feel like I am "cutting through the stem". However, when I do this, I tend to hit behind the ball often and just not get a clean strike on the ball, but my swing path seems to be good. I think I come over the top subconsciously in order to not hit behind the ball. However, sometimes I completely top it or thin it. I have been golfing for about 9 months now, and I have become extremely frustrated. I might invest in one of your online skype lessons if I cannot figure this out soon!
I've heard you mention that you gather the ball. How is that possible when the ball is on the face for a millisecond? I thought face and path are the only way to control direction.
No man, the ball stays on the face long enough to take a ride! There is a flat spot the size of a quarter on that club face; you don’t ever think of path to the ball, you think of path through the ball and into the direction you want the ball to start! Tennis, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, ping pong, you are always focused on WHERE THE BALL NEEDS TO GO and not just the ball!
Work on these things one at a time and see if it solves the problem. Is your left arm straight through the whole swing? Try a swing with a left arm straight as an arrow. Are you keeping your eyes on the ball a little moment after hitting the ball aswell? Or do you look away from it too soon?
Kevin, I am certainly not a teacher so take this as it is, but for me I have found that I have to slow my rhythm down when performing this drill to brush the mat with any kind of consistency. If you watch Shawn closely he is never in a hurry when he does that drill. I sometimes also miss the mat but am happy if I am close and making full swings to the target. Also as someone who has had the pleasure of taking a lesson with Shawn, he is amazingly consistent in a way that he makes look easy on video and is very memorizing to watch in person. It definitely takes practice. So don't get down on yourself and keep working at it.

The golf swing is a science that can be broken down to it's mechanic elements that if closely mimic could produce a repeatably accurate golf shot. Lead foot flat as possible thru down swinging motion along with the other keys or feeling...
Shawn ! I have to ask a question about Moe Norman and the plane-- you truly don't believe he set-up on a single plane which was the impact plane? So does that also mean that you don't believe in Todd Grave's teaching with the whole Moe Norman style swing? I have to say, I've tried various swing methods and just by setting up on the IMPACT plane, has drastically improved my ballstriking, my body's positions and overall frees up my entire swing.. one thing I noticed with great ballstriking is the shaft's angle from setup to impact -- if there is generally less of a variance whether steeper at impact, or slightly shifted, I notice that the better ball strikers are closer to little to no variance in that overall shaft angle from setup to impact. thoughts? Do you truly believe that Moe was NOT setting up in the impact plane? my swing before the moe norman style had my shaft varying in angle so severely at impact was causing all sorts of nightmares like early extending, hip thrusting into the ball losing tushline and all sorts of bad stuff.
I have had my own conversations with Moe during our heavy studies of his swing from 1995 to 2001. Moe would say about Natural Golf at the time, “what are they doing?!” I don’t do that! Moe was not about the positions; he was about heavy hammers, momentum into his very detailed pictures of what he wanted the ball to do and where he wanted the ball to go. What I don’t like about the golf teaching industry is that they are still missing the boat on how to teach the game. They scare you into thinking you need to fix things when all along it was the focus you were holding in your mind. What was your focus when you thought your swing was all over the place?
@@golflessons I've studied Graves method as well. I understand your idea of focusing on task but Moe definitely set up a little differently so that his hands were set up in the same place where he impacted the ball and having worked on his method it is decidedly an easier to control the direction of your shots when you replicate some of the things he did.
Mine is less “controlled and held onto” and Mu’s will evolve a bit more; but because his arms are so much longer than mine, his plane needs to naturally be more flat. He has same height as me, but his hands hang way lower than mine!
Hi Shawn. You have made golf so much more fun for me since I found you and WIG. I have definitely improved since I began practicing "out of the way, out of the way". One thing that seems to always trip me up with this is that I am always expecting the club to "feel right" at the top of my back swing if I am "cutting grass" unobstructed. I know from talking and working with you that what is right and what feels right are two different things but it drives me crazy that the club never feels comfortable in the back swing for me and I find myself doing the no no of looking back at the club and manipulating, losing focus on the target. Especially when I close the club face at address. Am I missing something or is it just lack of trust on my part? My ball flight is actually pretty good, it just feels horrible when I take the club back and I keep thinking I am doing something wrong.
Hi Jason Shawn has posted several videos addressing this problem. Having an intermediate point and staying with that point throughout the swing is key. My intermediate point for a draw is 2' past the golf ball 2' high and 2' right of target line. The task is bury the club head into that point. When he takes the club back and asks himself " does it still feel like I can "swing to the target " ? He will stop and ask himself this through out the backswing and at the top. That advice is golden. I would also make sure you have a solid firm grip. Poor grips always breaks down at the top. Hope this helps .Good luck Jason.
Good answer with Mike S! Also, answer this: when you are fading the ball, does the club feel better in your hands than when you draw the ball? Because when you fade, the club head feels more toe down at the top of the backswing and will feel more “balanced” and more comfortable. When you close the face, the top of backswing feels less balanced and less comfortable.
@@golflessons Yes it feels most uncomfortable when trying to draw the ball which is what I try to do most often. When I first found WIG I had a horrible slice that almost made me leave the game. Learning to hit a draw became a bit of an obsession. In my case I have a neutral to weak grip naturally and you have had me close the face at address pretty aggressively which definitely brings the face dynamically square when I swing and produces straight or slight drawing ball flight but it just never feels comfortable at the top and I always find myself manipulating my wrists or what feels like that to me any way. If I read into your answer a little, you are saying its going to feel a little strange since I am closing the face to start. I just need to trust it and swing.
@@juliek.1830 THAT IS CORRECT! And closing aggressively is an UNDERSTATEMENT. Shawn, your Club was way above your shoulders as compared to Mu. Why the difference?
Mine is less “controlled and held onto” and Mu’s will evolve a bit more; but because his arms are so much longer than mine, his plane needs to naturally be more flat. He has same height as me, but his hands hang way lower than mine!
Sav -brutal call “That’s a great...pause...MISS”
My old next door neighbour (r.i.p) used to practice his swing by hitting the heads of the daisies that grew in his lawn.
Hi Jason
Shawn has posted several videos addressing this problem.
THERE IS A STADIUM OF GOLFERS MOVING THROUGH MY FINGERS AS I WRITE THIS AND THEY ARE SAYING LISTEN TO SHAWN, THIS TOOK ME TO THE NEXT LEVEL BALL STRIKING!!💥🔥💪🤛
See “hit a honkin’ draw to hit it straight shawn clement” on youtube
On our premium channel it would be the first video of “the consistency series” and also the “senior series”

@@golflessons Well since I belong to the premium channel, and I am closer to a senior than a junior :-), I better go watch that video and get with it !!!! Thanks for all you do Shawn, and I appreciate the fact that after all of your time on TH-cam you still make the time to reply personally.
Great video Shawn. Munashe's swing is looking fantastic. It's harder for the muscled up guys not to be the pit bull with the rag doll lol.
Todd Graves would have a brain spasm if he heard you say that Moe wasn't single plane!!!!!
I know!! 😝😂
All three of you guy's swing are across the line at the top of the back swing(and I use that term loosely). I thought that was a no no?
As always great video cut that grass
Thanks Robert! You bet! Zip through that grass towards the target freely!
I thought this video was going to be about how to play a hole with a dog leg 😂
That is too long a shaft for a 7. It looks like a 5.
