VHS Recorded TV: In the late 80s/early 90s we lived in Japan. My sister-in-law would send Care Packages to my daughters with popcorn and VHS Recorded TV Shows, since they lacked American Programs, where we lived in a Japanese town.
She initially made the recordings with the Commercials edited out, but the kids let her know they really missed seeing the commercials, so they knew what was going on back in the states, so she shifted gears and started including them in.

Storage locker cleanouts are so sad for me. Someone's entire life in a little box that they hoped to get back someday, spent a lot of money maintaining, and then had to abandon. So sad that this may be the archeological remains of a life that went off the rails.

Makes me sad also. My son passed away in 2020. I was paying on his unit and mine. I had some employees that worked with me as it got expensive. Then came a horrible man that treated me like he was a bill collector and not a nice one. When I went to pay it he had already took it off line and sold it the next day. It was like loosing my son all over again. I just was not ready to go through it yet and now this part of his life is gone to me. The buyer would not talk to me either!

I would have done a double check on those milk crates. The older plastic/fiberglass ones with the metal rim around the top can bring some good money. More if they have advertising for dairies or stores that are not in business anymore. I made enough at auction to cover most of my bills on just a bunch of square milk crates that were still in good shape.

    • @MarkRozema-v9m
      @MarkRozema-v9m ปีที่แล้ว

Pretty low value in terms of time invested to sell, around here at least. Milk crates look to be selling for about $5 a pop, these looked to be almost all non-collectable crates as well, not much dairy farm history around this part of the world. That said a lot of 20-30 listed for $100 might move and be worth the bother, buts its borderline. Pretty sure the video poster places a reasonable high value on his time though, as far as I can tell he is relatively successful in his business.

Anything that’s useable and not contaminated, don’t take it to the dump- post it online for free and have somebody come pick it up. Make it a priority to never take things to the dump. Things you think are garbage maybe be things somebody else can make use of in ways you never thought possible (there are people who would love to take the old VHS tapes even just to see what’s actually on them, or they can be used for art projects, etc.).

I remember when my ex was a nurse in the Navy reserves. We had been fighting so much that we split the bills and she had her own bedroom for the last 2 years. We had a 10 year old. Suddenly she told me she was leaving and never coming back; we divided all our stuff verbally and that was that -- she left. I was a single dad. I could not afford to stay there alone so I moved, in the process I got a storage room and put all her stuff in there. My new rent bill with my apartment and her storage fit my budget better than a bigger apartment. I found out years later that she had been activated and went to IRAQ. She never communicated that to me, all I knew was that she had moved "back east." I had decided it was best not to get rid of ANYTHING that was hers. In the end she did 2 [15 month?] tours in Iraq. But then she moved to Chicago and lived there with a friend for a while. So in all it was about 4 - 5 years that I paid $80 a month. Now that is not precise, but I spent about $4-5000 to store about $4-500 worth of stuff. When she did return for her stuff we put the whole unit in her name, she took a few things that she wanted, went back to Chicago, and never made a single payment, the unit was soon repo'd. -- It all made perfect financial sense in that situation, can you imagine if I didn't have any of her stuff??? There would have been hell to pay.

Sometimes storage places throw everything people leave behind when they move out into one unit and then sell it off as a lock cut off. It saves the room in their dumpsters and gets rid of junk. Just giving you a heads up so you won't be taken advantage of.

Antique Cabbage Cutter: many of those old mandolins style cutters had a second part, which looked like a 4-sided frame that the cabbage head sat in, to keep your fingers away from the blades. It fit in side slots on the large board, to slide back and forth smoothly. Once separated from the cutter, the smaller part doesn’t look like much of anything, so it often gets tossed away.

I agree it is a sad proposition to leave a storage unit and never have the means to return or the money to pay for keeping someone else's life accumulated treasures and never know the reason it was there in the first place. It is really sad and the way things get packed can give a clue to a possible situation of just having to move or being evicted. I could never do what Alex has done because sometimes it is just sad and nothing more.

That pad he threw on the thing saying the things people keep, that looks like the pad that wheel chair users need. They're expensive so they use them until they literally no longer can. My significant other of 8 years has a parent that is wheel chair bound. He has a pad in the same shape. It's kinda molded to him and again very expensive so he still uses it. Each of his chairs has a pad that stays with it because he likes how it is with each chair. Almost wonder if a family member passed away and family packed up what was left and had forgotten about it our passed away themselves.

Trash runs: Options where u live may vary, but here in Washington State, we have 4 basic trash options: curbside pick-up, small loads to transfer stations, dumpster rental and paying by the Ton after driving over a scale and paying per pound.
Dumpster Rentals are great for house clearing, but are impractical for storage units. Curbside is too expensive for a any large volume.
Taking it by the pick-up, when there is a lot of trash in a unit can increase costs and consume extra time, depending on fees and driving distance.
When working locally, I favor driving over the scale and paying by the pound when clearing most large units (or multiple units). Here, we pay in the $30-40 per ton range and they take mattresses as general garbage. Mattresses, like large furniture, can be problematic for folks that clear units regularly. The scales are large enough that a truck, with trailer can be weighed together and the trailer makes it easier to deal with couches and mattresses.
Additionally, since the place with the scale is a larger facility, they also take recycling (cardboard, glass, plastic and metal) free and are a drop off point for e-waste. All of which turn up in storage units and disposing of them for no cost, means more profit.

The longer you store things, the more they charge! In the end you usually spend far more on rent than the items are worth, or could make from them. If you don't want it in your house right now you are probably not going to want it in the future either-or actually sell it. Don't do it except as a short term emergency because of a trip or move or renovation or death.

Once I saw the Band-aid I guessed that the Leatherman's scalpel had got you. Oddly enough, I have a diagonal cut, almost exactly 28 yrs ago, from the base of my right thumbnail extending down a good inch and a half down the finger. Ask me how I got it ;-) Great vid as always, hope those Atari games help cover costs. And with Elvis being huge right now thanks to the movie, you should be able to get some decent coin!

Makes me think of something that might have been left after a relative died that was just packed up and put into a storage unit until they could sort through it but that sorting day never came.

Also could be just someone moving house and didn't want to take all their junk items with them, so they stored it to sort later but never got around to it.

Great unit actually, I find that what people find collectable very informative and their lifestyle. You should have saved the buckets of jewelry to go through with Melissa, she probably would have found some good stuff in there. I still have my sewing box like that and love it too. Anyways, have a great day and don't use the knifes you find in storage units.
