Pat benatar was classically trained in opera before she decided to switch to rock music in the late 1970's. Her vocal range is astonishing.

Finally someone who's reacted to Pat Benatar's version. IMO her version blew Kate Bush's away.

In the liner notes of the box set, Pat Benatar said this song was very difficult to sing. She also felt like she didn't do the song justice. It's different from KB's version for sure, but I love them both for very different reasons.

As a teen I listened to Pat's version on a loop so many times and have been telling people about it ever since as not many people even know that she covered it. There are some live videos of Pat singing it, unfortunately the sound is not great but you can clearly hear how beautifully she delivers the song.
Thanks so much for the video!

I first heard this song when Crimes of Passion first came out. I was 15 and babysitting for my older sister (she's 8 years older than me). I was listening to her records and I noticed that one of the songs on Crimes of Passion was a song called Wuthering Heights. I had just read the book by Emily Bronte and was haunted by the story (beautifully written book that reads like a long poem). I'd not heard Kate Bush's original version. I loved this version and felt it captured the haunting emotion of Bronte's classic gothic novel. I've since heard Kate's original version and like it too. She wrote it at age 18 within a few hours! Very emotive and theatrical but I consider it more performance art than radio friendly. Prefer Pat's rockier sound and equally haunting vocals which introduced the song to a wider audience.

I’m biased, but I think this is the BEST version of the song, but it all comes down to taste, really. I think this may be Pat’s most underrated song. If it isn’t, it would be Don’t Let it show, from her first album. Anyway, I am partial to Hard Rock and Metal, and not only do I feel that NO ONE, touches Pat in the Rock genre, but, she is one of the best voices, period. I have only found one person who is even close to her as a frontwoman of a Hard Rock/Metal band, and that would be Amy Lee of Evanescence. Amy can’t match Pat’s range, but neither does Pat play piano like Amy. But Amy has a similar presence to Pat, as a frontwoman.

I actually first heard this sung by Benatar and had no it was a cover. I loved it and I love it still. I also prefer it, but can't say one of the versions is better than the other as they're so different. I like them both and understand what Kate Bush was trying to do with the song. Benatar manages to capture some of the eeriness with her voice (in spots) and the band also captures the eeriness with some of the instrumentation. Benatar's voice adds such a depth though. I can tell so much work had to go into making their arrangement of this song.

I like this version because I can actually sing along with it since it's in my vocal range and Pat's voice is phenomenal but I prefer to listen to and like Kate's version better because it's artistically sublime. There is no other sound like it. You really get into the ethereal and gothic vibe of what Kate is portraying. It's so outlandish and weird but in all the right ways. Perfectly portays the mood of the lyrics. Pat's version is amazing too, it's just that i feel all of the lyrics with the original. Pat's is vocally better but Kate's is artistically better and has a lot more depth to it... I mean she did write and produce it, lol.

I got to it in a roundabout way after listening to Moroder's "Metropolis soundtrack album" which features her track "Here's my Heart on it".. Then Spotty followed it up with this out of the blue... I like this better specially the outro to Kate's which is on that 1st album is sung in her trademark very high key.

It would be fun to hear them do a duet of the song. For another amazing cover, Anne and Nancy Wson's version of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zepplin with the surviving members in attendance and Jason Bonham on drums. Or Prince's cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the George Harrison Memorial concert shows why he is a great guitarists.

Pat Benatar sings this really well. I don't think that you can compare this with Kate Bush's version. The main difference is the key in which it is sung (Kate sings it in A and this is in F - I think!) I remember Kate Bush stating that the high key helped to identify with the fact that Cathy is a ghost, and she achieves that amazing, high-pitched sound which Kate felt sounded ghost-like. Also Kate's artistic interpretation is iconic, and her choreography, which I don't think Pat Benatar does..

Yea it’s pretty much impossible to say one is better than the other! Even though they’re so similar in ways they’re both very different songs. This is just a rocking classic kinda ballad where as kates version is a haunting masterpiece. Both amazing regardless though!

I greatly prefer Pat Benatar's version. I like a lot of Kate Bush, but I find her rendition of Wuthering Heights insufferably shrill and annoying, so much that I truly cannot bear to listen to it. Pat Benatar's version is beautiful, and near operatic. Kate's version comes off like a squeaky weirdo. Sorry.

I think the thing with this version that a lot of people like isn’t so much to do with the passion of her voice as it is to the vibe of this version! To me it makes me feel like I’m listening to some amazing 70s classic rock song when I hear this version. They’re both great in their own way
