- 'On This Day 1982: Falklands War - HMS Sheffield Sinks'
Here, the Sheffield’s Captain, James Salt, talks about the Argentine attack - the very short warning his crew received, the missile’s impact and aftermath.
The Exocet blew a huge hole in the ship’s side and led to an inferno on board - with some of the metal glowing red with the heat.
Twenty of Sheffield’s crew died in the attack and the ship later sank, on May 10, 1982.

French-made missile launched by a French-made plane..... (Sorry) 😞😯🥺😔
Y sorry????? brits do not rule the waves since at least the Hood was blown out the water and the prince of wales was jackhammered to pieces by the hirohitos
An example of retaliation at work. Less than a week after the sinking of the Belgrano.
The comments from the Argentinian pilots were that this was not rooted in feelings of retaliation.
R.I.P. Sam Salt .
Human commentary, unlike the BBC
No entiendo el idioma solo se Español, pero debe ser uno de los barcos atacados por la Aviación (pilotos valientes e ingeniosos) Argentina en la guerra de las Malvinas.
Glad we bagged the Belgrano, good on you Conqueror and her crew ❤️👏
Belgrano was sink before than Sheffield
One Kinzal and the HMS Queen Elizabeth will become home to Nemo.
Glad we bagged 31 of your Royal Navy ships lmao. 8 sank, 8 damaged beyond recognition and the rest plain fvcked up.
@@Toxic2T 8 sank? HMS Sheffield, HMS Coventry, HMS Antelope, HMS Ardent, SS Atlantic Conveyor and RFA Sir Galahad. That’s 6 you also sank a landing craft but that’s not a ship and that would only make 7. Also we sank ARA General Belgrano, ARA Santa Fe, ARA Isla de los Estados, ELMA rio carcarañá, ARA Bahía Buen Suceso, PNA Rio Iguazú (GC-83) and ARA Narwal. AND we also captured 4 landing craft, ARA Yehuin, PNA Islas Malvinas, ARA Forrest, ARA Penélope, ARA Monsunen. So we got 12 of yours not including landing craft. AND we fixed our damage ships AND most importantly we could replace the losses your navy never recovered. 🇬🇧🇫🇰
"We"??? are you a veteran? I don't think so. And by the way, the sinking of HMS Sheffield was in response to the unnecessary sinking of Belgrano. There was an ongoing negotiation being led by the UN, but the murderer Thatcher needed to take the war to a point of no return. The sinking of Sheffield was a retaliation for the assassination of Argentinian sailors in the Belgrano.
RIP Skipper🙏⚓️
Was there any get back?
Not in the sense of striking an Argentinian ship in retaliation but they won the war and still hold the Falklands so I guess you could call that a get back.
They couldn't lol
@@Toxic2T why.?
@@jgreen4715 Because they didn't lol
@@Toxic2T because the entire Argentina navy ran back to port.
