  • On Saturday 13th April, visitors to the High Great Chamber at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire, were in for a surprise...
    To celebrate the opening of the 'Virtue and Vice' exhibition, curated by Dr Helen Smith (English and Related Literature) and the 'Conversion Narratives' project team, a York quartet gave an apparently spontaneous rendition of the wooden sheet music that adorns the famous Eglantine Table at Hardwick. 'Les Canards Chantants' - Sarah Holland (Soprano), Robin Bier (Alto), Edward Ingham (Tenor), Graham Bier (Bass) - transcribed and edited the music prior to the performance.
    To find out more about the project and the exhibition visit www.york.ac.uk/...

    Here's a most gracious prank. How utterly delightful... Just imagine having been fortunate enough to have been calmly walking about the Hall when suddenly, sublimely, these exquisite voices began to bloom, breathing life and love into ages past. Many blessings to Sarah, Robin, Edward & Graham for their lovely gifts to us.

    I wish I could be there with my lute ! Thank you, it amazes me that 4 youngest in 2022 sing a 16th cent. song still talking directly to our hearts and souls, let's call it "The Bridge of Humanity"

    This is so beautiful, It touched my Heart and Soul deeply, since the very first notes of the song. I am sure that I couldn't have held back a tear if I had been there in person.

    Not quite what I'd call a mob, but fabulous surprise performance! You do lose something from departing from an intimate madrigal setting, but now I want to see a flash mob version with 200 people. XD

    Is there any full recording of this available? The lack of echo from being performed in something that is not a naked empty stone hall like a church, makes this sound so very warm and cozy

    Can somebody translate "shent" for the American audience? E.g. "I shent a package to me auntie in Angleshey" or "Me mates've got on a night out on the beer but I shent be attending"

    • @elisabethb.131
      @elisabethb.131 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      'Shent' is old English for 'being put to shame'. The word is obsolete in the United Kingdom as well as in the US. This song first appeared in 1565, so close to 450 years ago!
