  • Pretty impressive laserdisc game-- yep, they were still making them in 1990 (though the heyday for such games was around the mid 80s)-- and this is the first full motion non-animated one in which you can interact with the action! Earlier titles had full motion video but you could only select from a menu of options, not directly interact with action (Goal To Go, Quarter Horse). You are a gunfighter in a small Old West town trying to protect its humble denizens from Mad Dog McCree and his outlaw gang. The action is in first person perspective and people come up to talk to you directly-- or shoot at you! Very cool interaction, even if the acting/dialogue is decidedly cheesy. Various locations can be selected from a menu-- Corral, Saloon, Sheriff's Office, Bank, and later Mine and Hideout (and various locations on the way to the hideout). An old prospector is your guide through the game and he (and sometimes another townsperson or two) can give helpful hints as to what to do next. When using the gun controller, pointing it downward off the screen like towards an imaginary holster will reload. Taking too long to shoot a bad guy or missing will result in a lost life, and running out of 3 lives will prompt a continue screen. Occasionally a "showdown" between you and one opponent will prevent you from drawing too early, or you can't shoot at the enemy. The arcade original has a readout at the bottom that I didn't have-- Lives (white stars), score, and bullets remaining (up to 12). Pay special attention to the things the prospector wants you to shoot at the mine to disarm the booby traps! A couple times you will get a break from the action and take on an optional target practice. Fun game of reflexes balanced out nicely with cool interaction with the various allies, townsfolk and enemies. Sequel: MAD DOG II: THE LOST GOLD. See you soon with game #12, and stay warm!

I loved this game so much! I remember playing it in 1998, 8 years after it's release. I feel old!

There was nothing quite like it at the time, was there?

Yes, it was $1.00 per game back then. American Lazer was originally developed to help law enforcement with situational tactics, but quickly learned the real money was to be made in Arcade business. The actors were mostly stunt workers from Hollywood and the location was a movie lot outside of Yuma , AZ that unfortunately burned down many years ago. There was also "Mad Dog Mcree Ii", "Who Killed Johnny Rocket?" (a 1920's Gangster story) and "Fast Draw" (just a fun out draw the Bad Guy game). The unit we visited the most was a stand up cabinet with a projection TV for a really big screen in southshore Tahoe,CA. Boy did they make a ton of money off my me, my brothers and all my cousins over the couple of years it was there. Would actually buy one of them today if they were available.

I love...I mean LOVE Mad Dog McCree Russ. I was all over this game and it happens to be the first Full Motion Video title that I ever played in the arcade. I was so impressed by it that me and my brother use to pretend at home mimicking the game.
"You're lookin for trouble stranger?" I love that quote and still joke about it with my brother even to this day.
Awesome choice as always Russ. Keep up the great work for sure bro. 8^)

Really glad you liked this title, Anthony. The cheesy dialogue/acting actually enhanced the enjoyment. Neo Geo title coming up next!

Oh wonderful, thanks for showing! That ol' prospector was a hoot.
There are two things I find noteworthy about this title. 1. The image quality, even today's 4k era, it's very good minus the lower frame-rate. 2. The stunts. That one dude tumbling out the barn-loft, and the other rolling off the saloon roof smacking the ground... there were no cut-scenes, complete takes. The guy tumbling into the hay had it a little easier. I gotta see whether this was on the PS2 so I can play it; does it emulate pretty well... looked pretty good.

Yeah, the prospector was the best actor in the game (apart from some goofy death throes). There is indeed a DVD release compatible with the PS2. Pretty spendy though. Check eBay/Amazon.

Randomly thought about this game today - thanks for posting! Always wanted to see the other scenes.
Played many times in the arcade but it was very difficult. Couldn't see the bad guys hiding in the windows, and it was pretty unforgiving on the aim. Didn't want to keep pumping quarters into it to continue.

Needed more of the mayor's daughter imo ... seriously I was out of arcades for good by 1990 -- I didn't even know they did live-action laserdisc games ... pretty wild

I personally dropped out of the arcade scene around the mid 90s. Too many 3D fighters and rail shooters popping up. Some pretty good racing games though.

Great 'review' Crazyclimber, I never encountered this in the arcade but did play it (in it's incredibly grainy form) on the Sega CD. These type of games are good when taken for what they are... Good Arcade type fun. 👍🎮

Ah yes, the Sega CD.. I loved it and didn't mind the grain as much as others (and liked some of the FMV games). Someday I'll get to the 20 From the Sega CD series. But for now I like revisiting 1990!
