Death By Train or-Stay off the Railroad Bridge When A Train is Coming!

  • Hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July! I spent the morning railfanning and stayed close to L'Anse as the traffic was crazy! The lighting was not great but I still enjoyed catching the CN come into Herman and again heading Southbound out of Herman. I did observe a potentially dangerous situation. I observed an older gentleman on the Railroad bridge over the Falls River taking photos of the Falls River while leaning over the railing! I told his wife the train was coming and she in turn let him know. The next couple I observed parked and headed straight to the bridge and started taking photos of the falls River as the train was coming. I ran a short distance yelling and waving my arms at them but I don't know if it was me that made them look up or the oncoming train! There is a curve there and the engines are shoving not pulling so the engineer would be the last to see the bridge and the conductor would see it seconds before crossing it! There are signs that say No trespassing-they are totally ignored! There is a posted pathway to follow the river but these people chose to ignore it and go on the dangerous bridge crossing, This is not the first time I have seen this happen but today it was the closest to a tragedy. I have seen plain ignorance from the part of the couple that paid no attention to the warning signs and could have been tragic for many people. Observing life while railfanning~!

The lighting was just fine. You could put a sign every 10 feet and people wouldn't pay any attention. They would figure the signs were there for the people that don't know what they're doing.

True but they don't have to invite the public to cross the RR tracks. People are curious and will want to see the river from the bridge. There is a perfectly safe way to follow the river coming from L'Anse marina area.

@@nancyhaun There are the people crossing over and under stopped trains too. Last summer, I ran and yelled trying to get a young girl off, early teenage maybe, I got a glare of the sun as I ran and looked up for her and became disoriented at which time she either got around the grain car from the ladder or got back down in front of me and either way, crossed over the coupling, as I continued despite some temporary loss of my vision. I almost touched the ladder and a witness yelled "On the ground, other side!" and as I returned to the automobile which that witness was waiting in, passenger door still open from my expedient exit, I got on the seat, that's when those rail cars got stretched into motion, meaning a long portion of that train was in motion as this crossing and attempt to rescue happened. 😮
This is where many of those "guards", excessively hired during covid, should be placed instead of remaining at malls and other public spaces. They can be working these interesting nature sites and problematic rail crossings. Of course bad guards need not apply, those flunkies should try for other kinds of jobs because we don't need people caught and rescued near danger only to be beaten by hands and batons for crossing-while-black and other unethical matters as sometimes reported on in the news. 😢
Maybe it was you who caused that attention to the train, but me, I think your efforts matter just the same, you care and you did what you could to get people away. 😊
Let's hope there is a better way to make it matter to everyone, because we can't always be there and it may be too late as we try. That's why I am constantly trying for attention to this matter. ❤

When I was a kid in the 60's he older kids told us that the Conductor in the Caboose would shoot rock salt at us if we were on CN property when a train went by. We believed this, of course, and while we still used the tracks as a trail from one place to another in the woods, we'd scatter in a panic once the distant throb became loud enough that someone would yell "TRAIN!!!". One of those lies told to kids that maybe wasn't such a bad thing.

Hi Nancy, Thank you for your diligent effort getting such beautiful scenery up on the net. I am always so amazed by the scenery of a train track, a bridge, a stream and all the greenery. It is just so soothing to me. I can't understand why anyone would stay on the tracks when the train is coming either. Whenever I am stopped by a train in my car, I usually stay well back from the tracks just in case something goes wrong. A train can accordion and who knows how far from the tracks the cars can get. OK, Happy 248th birthday of our country. FYI: Something I heard on Stephen K. Bannon's War Room yesterday during his 4th of July show I'd like to retell. When our Continental Army fought the British, they defeated the most powerful military in the world at that time. Maybe it's common knowledge for many, but it wasn't for me. That's really saying something and I feel quite belittled for my lowly contribution to the cause. Fine Business lady. ben/ michigan under the bridge

I enjoy watching this video, Nancy! The view of the train coming down L'Anse Hill was amazing. It was a good thing that you were near the railroad bridge over Falls River so that you could yell at the couple standing on the bridge to get off because the train was coming. The train was moving at a good speed as it was heading for the bridge. Watching the train coming up L'Anse Hill starting at 25:47 was fascinating. Thank you for uploading this video for us to enjoy! I wouldn't be complaining about the lack of mosquitos!
I really enjoyed watching it come down L'Anse Hill, the sounds of the birds all around make it really peaceful. I could probably watch that bit on repeat all day long!
It's crazy to see just how beat up that old rail is. I suppose that explains the slow speed. Of course, if there's not enough traffic on the line, there's likely not enough justification to go replace it. Hopefully your mention of the maintenance means they'll improve things a little bit.
And yes, that horn really needs some work. It sounds like a dying giraffe.
I just don't understand the complete lack of respect for railroad tracks. I feel like no matter how many people are injured or killed every year, people still just ignore the safety risks and go out on them anyway.
    Thanks for sharing!

Bambi and all the Northwoods animals are going to vacate that area if they don't fix those two horns. It's been fun watching the mallard duck Channel as that way you can see the cars lining up that will go north to Llanse. One day alone was 11 cars but they're usually dispersed throughout the train plus the rip track at Green Bay and Gladstone have been busy restencilling the WC gondolas so you can read the reporting marks and numbers after 25+ years of tough service. Plus they have the fun of keeping gondolas available for Algoma Steel. Alter scrap in Green Bay as well as Iron Mountain and Ishpeming and getting the Clunkers back to load more junk ties I . . .. . ..... . .. ... ..... . . ... . .. . . ... ..

@@nancyhaun I have heard that before, the long lense makes the tracks look awful at both straight and curved areas. I've been trying to see how it is they not only look wobbly but also not aligned and how it is other straight lines look proper on the trains as they get onto those areas.
I have seen on video some runways which look as bad, the airplane lands and partially disappears into the lower area, it's a long runway, but still looks needing repairs before further use.
And that horn. Ha, that added character. Better than rust though, I see lots of rust sometimes and that can be a lot of work to correct or become a sad ending of the loco when not attended to. If that set of horn can completely stop working, that won't be good, but it may be failing in one where the sound is made rather than from parts in the set of them.
And going up hill, WOW, what a catch you got there. 😊

Steam trains have the same effect in the uk with not railway people being stupid and getting too close to the tracks where 125 mile an hour trains are running.

@@nancyhaun I recall a man getting a selfie video and getting the boot from above. Yes, someone got out and booted his shoulder, sending him and phone to the ground. At first he was PO'd but then he realized why that action was done. What all gets me is, he didn't see or hear anything coming, he was doing the selfie view over the tracks rather than one way or the other along them - for how long he did that(?) and a slowed train happened with him too near. His video showed the sudden loco and foot and a resulting mess of tumbling scenes.
I think a lot of people belong in rail museums. As visitors. Go look around, touch and maybe even ride, it'll take that curiosity to a place which is static display and or controlled for pedestrian traffic.
