The budget deck compilation videos you did are so sick. I bought one of the $25 decks and I'm planning on getting another. Being able to spend $20-50 on a non-precon deck to gift to a new player or a friend in my playgroup is fantastic. Really appreciate you Tomer.
I literally *just* built this deck using only commons I had in my collection! This is the perfect commander to build with draft chaff! Here is the changes I would recommend from Tomer's deck list. Some of these are strict upgrades:
Replace:
Withstand Death -> Blessed Hippogriff
Acrobatic Leap -> Arrester's Zeal
Ajani's Presence -> Gaea's Gift (I know it's an increase from 1 to 2 mana, but it's worth it)
Ranger's Guile -> Apostle's Blessing (No buff, but protection also grants evasion)
The deck might also benefit from more evasion:
Kithkin Armor (Can't be blocked by creatures power 3 or greater, for 1 mana)
Hunter's Blowgun (1 to play, 2 to equip, grants Deathtouch, which is practically unblockable on a Trample creature)
Bombadil's Song (2 to play, grants Hexproof and gives evasion from the Ring tempting you, plus +1/+1 until eot)
Escape Tunnel (For evasion if you don't have counters yet)
Wings of Hubris (2 to play, 1 to equip, grants flying or a one-shot total unblockable for finishing a game)
Hedgewitch's Mask (1 to play, 2 to equip, gives a +1/+1 boost and can't be blocked by creatures power 4+)
The $25 deck might benefit more from:
Mutagenic Growth
Rancor
Which are both ~$1.
Thanks for the suggestions! Hippogriff is an easy swap, Zeal is better overall (no untap tho), Gift ehh debateable, Blessing is probably better.
The more evasion I disagree though, most of those cost too much mana imo, and John already comes with trample.
$25 Growth absolutely! Rancor probably too.
@@tomerabramovici32 Like I said, I literally just built this deck, so I haven't had a chance to test in a real game, but I'm concerned about getting stonewalled by a 6/6 (it'll eat a few spells before we can trample through)
Do you anticipate the deck's speed to be fast enough to start taking out players before the larger creatures land, or in your experience do you just not see so many large creatures playing defense in actual games?
@@iambensummers I agree big creatures can eat up cards, but generally I'd rather cards like Arrester's Zeal (or Leap) for the evasion due to mana efficiency plus pump. It's not permanent but compared to 3 mana to cast + equip Wings, the efficiency is way worth it. I'd rather cast 3 1-mana evasion spells over the course of 3 turns than spend 3 mana to give permanent evasion with 1 spell due to how good John is at drawing cards. Or just pump John to be bigger than blockers, like if john is swinging in for 9 and they block for 6 that's fine, they lose an important creature in the process and we still draw 3.
@@tomerabramovici32 what would you suggest in cutting to add rancor and mutagenic growth?
Always cool to see decks like this! Those are great for beginners who dont want to spent too much money on their first deck. Its also sweet to see elvish pioneer in the list! It was the first card ive ever pulled back in 2000 and it always has a special place in my heart. My wife gifted me the foil version last year for our anniversary, now I have both of them in a frame on the wall.
I recently built an aura/hand size matters budget deck inspired after Richard played it. Not played it yet, but really excited! Very unique and fun commander.
I play Sgt. in a $75 night with a few friends. He is insane. Of the $75 list, $25 of it is Smothering Tithe, lol. Rest is very similar to this list. People can't play all the 4-5 cmc spells whereas I can play all those 0-1 cmc spells :P Hits hard, draws hard, politics a little too lol.
I would love to see that list if possible. Im more on the 50$ budget and would still love to put S.Tithe in. Such a good way to break symmetry on people drawing
List please :) :)
If you need more defense vs. sac effects there's Sigarda, Host of Herons and Yasharn. And If you're getting beat down too quickly or just can't keep your commander on board there's Monastery Mentor (also good vs. normal edict-type effects), Blind Obedience, and Authority of the Consuls.
My sergeant john benton cards come in today!....weird, but nice timing!
Wild Defiance seems like a solid fit in here. Janky old 3CMC enchantment that gives any creature you control that gets targeted by an instant or sorcery spell +3/+3.
I play it in xyris and it's super good
Smothering tithe giving all these draws is my favorite
Budget brews are my jam. My personal play style leans more towards mid power level, but after moving across the country the only local groups I've found so far all play around the low cEDH level so something a bit higher power really helps
A similar pile of buff spells with less protection and more fling effects plus Ozolith works very well with Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes. You don't get cards for dealing combat damage (have to use the -2 after combat) but then neither do your opponents.
I recently did a $100 version, although it was really a $50 version with smothering tithe because I have an extra one 😆
My favorite budget edh content! Keep up the good work Tomer !
Only thing I'd add to mtgo version is smothering tithe as it's only 0.04tix definitely worth it for sure
I wish the other two videos where tagged in the description to make it easier to find them
Wow always love your videos Tomer! Keep up the spicy budget brews!
This sounds a lot like my Samut, Vizier of Naktamun deck. Super low curve and ramp to get out the commander on turn 2 to start the card draw snowball.
Having haste on the commander is soo nice. In a deck like this, you don't even care about board wipes... They just help clear away blockers. I'll often throw down a blasphemous act in Samut, recast my commander and keep swinging away.
John Benton looks like a very cool deck. I don't love Voltron decks because they tend to stomp one or two people and then have difficulty finishing off the rest of the table.. which is not fun for the one or two you stomp, but this one is cheap enough to maybe just try out.
Solitary Confinement is about 25c and seems like a good card for this idea as you will likely be archenemy anyways and have a lot of cards in hand.
Champions of Minas Tirith is a fun play in this deck. Smack somene really hard, then make them use all their mana if they want to try and crack back. its about .15, so really good for low budget
These budget deck videos are so good!
I feel like this is the perfect "let's play a second game" deck. It's easy to explain, it's consistent, it's fast to pilot and you can take someone out pretty quick to speed up the game.
Agreed : it's good to have battlecruiser decks, it's also good to have "LGS close in 35 minutes, let's have a quick one"'s decks. I have an Etali, primal conqueror deck for this purpose, and for an aggro deck, John Benton could be useful
@@tliessi I have a Laelia voltron for the same purpose but it would be nice to have another option that doesn't play fast and loose with the cards coming out of the deck.
Been seeing Sgt John a lot more lately. Saw him as a 99 in a deck that was "you want to draw cards" which I am so afraid of notion thief, I just refuse.
I really want a 15$ deck so I can play it unsleeved and freak people out around me. 100% will be building this deck as playing other peoples cards with pako et al didn’t really speak to me. Thanks so much 🥰
could you do an video on combine commander precons. as I have being play with the brothers war precons into a single deck and have being great funny with it (also it didn't trigger my ocd as all the cards match in the deck.) and wonder what other options their to do this with.
Lol on moxfield using tcgplayer prices its 8.80 and 17.95. So budget!
Heck yeah! Another Tomer budget list!
Seleznya voltron with a John.
Hmm...
Yes, I will make John Voltron
This is awesome. Where are you guys buying your cards to make these budget decks? I hate to say it but cardkingdom has this decklist at over 35 bucks so there has to be a better option. I think CK specifically is the only vendor that marks up their cheapest cards by up to 200%.. what you guys doing?
I'm currently brewing a budget Alistair, the Brigadier with Sergeant John Benton in the 99 and it's looking like it could be fun. I'd be very curious to see how @tomerabramovici32 builds a budget version of Alistair.
Hi Tomer, is there a video out there over your tribal tribal deck? I saw you play it on another channel and am looking to build one similar. Thanks!
You can find it on moxfield. Just search for "Tomer's changelings"
I have a Sergeant John Benton deck and it can kill a table pretty quickly.
deck list please :)
How can I have plains in my hand when there are only like 2 in the deck? - Richard probably
I need help with a budget Breena the Demagogue list.
What does everyone think about Gregor, Shrewd Magistrate / Glenn, the Voice of Calm as an alternative 15$ commander? Better evasion, better protection in blue and card draw only for you.
Hmm not so good tbh. You give up green (which is the best color for buffs and tied for best for protection), as well as trample and haste. Ofc you can make it work, but would go into a bit of a different direction with more equipment and auras I guess, as well as counter spells for protection. Also, letting your opponents draw is an upside I feel, because they either underestimate John as only a group hug commander or they are just too greedy. :)
@@MalteLewandowskiI don’t know if you read the card or not but you would never use equipment or auras that pump in Glenn because it would shut off skulk
@@starchaser6024 yeah but you do not have a lot of instant speed pump without green and without pump you are not drawing a lot and won’t kill anyone with commander damage?
@@MalteLewandowski it looks like it’s doable without green. Blue has a lot of base power and toughness = 4/4 combat tricks, combined with white’s pump spells and double strike.
Aaaaannd now the deck is $50, wonderful
I run a non budget version of this deck and it just bops. The 1 budget miss as far as cards go is Bounty of the Hunt, which is $0.27 for a zero cost +3/+3 in counters.
But for the non-budget version you also get to run like burgeoning and other fun stuff like that.
You pitch a green card, play a green card and lose the counters at end of turn before damage is removed. It's a 3-for-2 that doesn't actually protect it from damage. Where is it really good for you?
its 1 of 3 free buffs spells the 3rd being cut due to budget probably@@ecoKady
@@ecoKadyIt’s a free pump spell and the card you’re pitching is replaced with interest. Early in the game when you only have a few lands and there’s no big creatures out, this spell lets you pump SJB and keep mana up for protection.
@@ecoKady
Bounty of the Hunt's counters are actually removed at the cleanup step, at the same time damage is removed, so it would indeed help protect John Benten from damage.
@tomerabramovici32 No Sol ring and Arcane signet?
Sol Ring I couldn't fit in the $15 budget but it's in $25. Arcane Signet I would not run, turn 1 ramp is far superior because it gets John out a turn earlier.
Embiggen is strictly better than groundswell in this deck
They're both in the deck
I have this card in my Gluntch the Bestower, He can get big fast and go go gadget BONK! mmmm WALUE!
I built this guy from scratch. LAST NIGHT
🎉🎉❤❤
No season of growth in the deck???
I saw that too, but I'm wondering if you just don't need the cards. 2 mana enchantment when you could Giant Growth -> Ancestral Recall twice for the same mana cost.
Don't need it, trust me
15 for 15 incoming
Cool deck, but no disrespect, Xyris, even on a budget, is significantly better than John. About the only thing John does better is fly under the radar, but that's because he's weaker
I could be wrong but I've played both and think John is significantly stronger. These are both snowball commanders, you need to get out and start drawing cards asap, and John can easily come down t2 and swing immediately whereas Xyris is 2 more mana and no haste. Flying and access to Blue is nice, and the snakes are good secondary win con, but John is quicker on the main game plan and White brings a ton of protection which is what you need the Blue for anyway.
Being less mana and having haste is huge. By the time Xyris comes down, John has already drawn a new hand.
Don't underestimate having haste
