I lived in Keokuk, IA growing up and we lived on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. I remember lying in bed at night as a child and hearing the calliope playing as it entered lock and dam #19 behind our house. I also remember shaking the hands of Jimmy Carter and his daughter, Amy, when they came through the locks. Only wish this beautiful boat were open to the public again.
That is probably the most beautiful calliope I have ever heard, with such a sweet sound (personally I think only the Mississippi Queen, my all time favourite based on appearance and sound and Julia Belle Swain (marquetry of the console) ever came close), I hope she will be sailing again, as I love the Delta Queen. My favourite room is at the very back, right under the calliope, on the left side (looking forward), once travelled in by an Opera Singer.
I miss the Delta Quuen I thank about her all the time I wish she would cruise agin on the rivers there is nothing rong with the Queen but she is wood but she is a safe steamboat I love the Delta Queen come back Delta Queen I miss you
Madison Berry The Delta Queen is only as safe as the crew that keeps her shipshape. And as it was, the crew was doing a bang-up job and it is quite unfortunate that senate didn't see that.
SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lived at the Anna Louise Inn and would run to the 5th floor to see her go down the river after hearing her horn, you could hear the caliope long after you couldn't see her
I didn't know they retired her. How sad. I was there in 2003 and I remember that it was a great time. The boat definitely has a few wondering spirits floating around
I hope to take a voyage on the resurrected/refurbished/renovated Delta Queen. A voyage from Memphis to New Orleans would be grand!! I must not fail to say that I adore the beautiful calliope!!
This is why the bridges in Kentucky had to be so high. There is a law that bridges must be taller at flood stage based on the tallest smoke stacks of any ship that plies these rivers
Its a sad day for America, The DeltaQueen was the only one of a pair built together to still run, as the Delta King (sisterboat) is permantly docked as a hotel in old town Sacramento Ca.
prebooomer I live near the Sacramento area. Always loved visiting the Delta King. Sad that he is permanently docked, but that's mostly cause he gave the Delta Queen his engines. Hopefully one day both can be running again.
And Delta Queen floating Hotel steamboat please come back too the rivers I miss hering your calloipe and your steam whistele im sad that the Queen is A floating hotel she needs too come back as a steamboat cruise ship
No matter how often they like to post, the Delta Queen needs followers. She needs people who will tell Congress she is safe and we will ride even though we know she is made of wood.
+Jacob Woods I have been calling my congressmen to let the Delta Queen once again be allowed to cruise the Ohio and Mississippi. Being from Kentucky and watching the Great Steamboat race its just not the same without the Delta Queen racing the Belle of Louisville.
+David Alexandert so right, the Belle of Cincinnati just isn't the same, and the AQ had to put her stacks down and tacks forever to turn, so the old DQ vs BoL days were pretty good, some evenly matched boats. Similar engines, similar size (relative to the AQ), similar age, and both had beautiful 100% steam powered whistles and calliopes. I live in SC now (that Yankee from Ohio) so sadly I can't do to much, but I still remember when we lived there and they raced, had Tall Stacks, and we went back for the Belle's 100th.
I don't know what it is, but, to me, the calliope music sounds more sorrowful yet trying to be joyful at the same time. Case in point, 2:32 to 3:55 (does anyone know what that piece of of music is called?).
The "sorrowful" sound, if not simply colored by one's background knowledge of this being her last voyage, probably has to do with the fact that steam calliopes are damned impossible to keep in-tune. Even stuff like the temperature of the whistles, the temperature of the steam and even _the wind and weather_ are enough to throw off the tuning.
congress needs to let the steamboat DELTA QUEEN leave chattanoonga and let he go too CINCINNATIA and let her cruise again on the ohio and Mississippi rivers and I cant belave the Queens bill rain out of stam and congress killed the exemption the DELTA QUEEN is my favorite steamboat but im glad that the AMERICAN QUEEN is back on the rivers she is my favorite steamboat too and the QUEEN OF THE MISSISSIPPI
@@rudycarlson8245 That’s the thing. She isn’t gonna be static. She’d run pleasure cruises and possibly return to the Sacramento to San Francisco route. She definitely belongs in her home state rather than anywhere else.
football11248 Sadly, at this time, she is not taking cruises, but will if Senate passes a bill that will allow her to carry overnight cruises. She is heavily damaged now because of last winter and will undergo renovations.
This beautiful ship has so much heart and soul. Hope she is plying the river waters again and sharing her lovely voice.
Delta Queen is my birth place Holly Davis What a great people!

@@SgtJelly They needed someone like Johnny Cash to educate them. He did it via his TV show years ago.
They are working to replace and upgrade some of the ships hardware but mostly the boiler from 1919 which was for a destroyer that was never built.
Thank you to the President she'll soon enough be back in the waterways for us to see again!!!
You need to thank Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) who co sponsored the bill.
Didn’t Sherod Brown do that?
That’s the only good thing he did!
Calliope are so beautiful! Love hearing them

It should be returned to California
scorekeepn she never belonged to california.
The ship is haunted by a previous captain
Supposedly, they are restoring her and she’ll be back on the rivers soon enough!
What a SHAME this BEAUTIFUL vessel and part of our history is DOCKED as a hotel! It's an ignominious end for such a GRAND LADY!
Totally agree! Johnny Cash helped save it once many years ago, but he's no longer around to protest the decision.
the Delta Queen is a safe steamboat

truly the end of a glorious era
Nope. Not the end. Corporate greed almost ended it. Now she's coming back in 2020.
Luckily, it will be playing the rivers again hopefully very soon.
Just visited the beauty herself! Isn’t she lovely?
I love the delta queen she needs too do cruises on the rivers
+Madison Berry Are you special needs? We don't need your spam.

i think the delta queen walts
It's the Delta Queen Waltz by John Hartford.
GeebMachine it is a timeless piece of history. the song, the way the steam rolls into the air, the ship itself

@@PhirePhlame Music aint gotta be in perfect pitch to sound good. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Hi everyone I have been on the Delta Queen 2 times & I have 90+ min of Calliope Music I had my tape recorder. on 3 tapes,
lol new zealand still has a working steamboat.. actually several working steamboats/ships
Ross's Landing
Not "Rosses" Landing. John Ross founded what is now known as Chattanooga in 1816.
its sad is gone now
We had to sing about this thing in school.
Josh Rhodes that sucks
You lucky boy. Was it the DELTA QUEEN WALTZ?
This thing is a queen and should be respected as such😂😂
Another piece of culture gone!!!
She'll be back

Madison Berry Check the news, mate. The Delta Queen is back.
the US government are ass-holes, for doing that to the Delta Queen.
It better come to California to join the delta king
That’s never gonna happen she is going to return to the water where she belongs and not be a static display piece!

Fun fact this ship is haunted by a previous female captain who died in the 1940s
Bullshit.
