  • In this video I demonstrate how to play 5 Riffs from the debut album from the band Boston, including Peace Of Mind, More Than A Feeling, Smoking', Rock N Roll Band and Hitch A Ride. Tom Scholz is one of the most influential players that impacted my growth as a guitarist as well as my playing a writing style. I am happy to share my love for this incredible band. Boston's debut album was one of the most successful debut albums ever by a rock band and to this day continues to impress and influence musicians across the world. I hope you enjoy the video. Big thing on those Boston albums is so much laying on the guitar tracks impossible to play everything you hear on the tracks at once, Scholz was an engineering genius.😎🤘🎸🏍

My Grandparents got me a Boston CD for my 16th birthday. My Grandad and I always shared a cake each year growing up,his birthday was the day after mine. Anyhow, I put the CD on and after Amanda played,my Grandma said that was the prettiest music she'd ever heard......great memories and still keep that album close by. Thanks buddy

Van Halen get a lot of credit for changing rock and roll and guitar... and with all due respect... they deserve it. But Boston really pushed it forward as well... and earlier. Sonically I don't think anyone could touch them up to that point.

I remember in 1978 going to see V H and black Sabbath in Niagara Falls at the convention Centre, and more than a feeling came on the radio, to say it changed rock guitar tone henceforth is not an understatement, the tone completely consumes the listener. That fact that they could recreate it live, in varied contexts, was also amazing. I guess it helps to be an electrical engineer.

Great video! I’ve been getting into Boston lately. The only problem with doing Boston songs is finding a Brad Delp to sing them. I was just getting into guitar when this album came out. I remember the first early space station called Sky Lab was going to fall out of orbit and crash to earth during this period. Of course even back then the media made a big thing about it. Me and some other guitar friends were making a joke about it crashing on us and used our very limited ability to play More Than a Feeling as the theme song for the crash. Of course it crashed into the ocean and soon became old news.😁
    Edit:
Have to make a few corrections. Skylab fell in 1979. I guess we were learning guitar and Boston was still huge. Also it actually landed in a deserted area of Western Australia near Perth. At 58 my memory is a bit sketchy now and then.

I too have a number of favorites. Tom, EVH (RIP) and Brian May. I’m probably better at covering May, but love playing in the others styles.
Strange enough, having been born in the U.K. (Wales), Brian is the only British player I like. The rest of the Brit bands are too dark and morbid for my taste. I prefer the “get up and go” American 80’s rock/metal, with harmony and melody.
I have to assume that Peavey amp, with the Cessna dashboard, must be growing on you. It’s still there 🙂

MARTY5150, try to do a Tom Scholz Theory lesson because he uses SUS chords, relative mode and modulates keys. Try to find a bunch of examples of boston songs that he modulates keys, where he uses the relative mode and uses SUS Chords to lead to the next section. He uses SUS chords like Augmented chords to lead into the next section of the song. He was classically trained on organ which I think it says on the back cover of the 1st record so that is why his melodies are themes and his chord progressions have phrases. He is good at making phrases and themes.

Nothing wrong with that. It's fun to learn parts we've skipped over for years. I have many songs on my list like that! 😁🎵🎵🎵

Good lesson Marty but there is a far easier way to play the intro to Hitch a ride , just start of at the 7th fret a power chord and move dow
n a whole step, then d string down a half step then the 1 st position a chord, Same notes but far easier to play

My dream is to see a pedal come out someday that let's you get the double tracked harmonies.

Marty love you man but the reason why hitch a ride is so hard is because it’s supposed to be am A string open D7-G9 then A open slide down 2 frets D5 G7 then same but D4 G7 then A chord first 3 strings . Which is super easy to play. You still blow me away on guitar but I can’t let you suffer any longer.

I have had a hard time last week getting the spare time for writing and editing so I just released the video. Didn't want to miss a week of posting. Been so hectic lately. It takes a few hours to write and edit which I just didn't have. So sorry. 🤷

I love the guitar harmonies in Boston's songs. My favorite song is probably Hitch A Ride. The best tutorial I've found on it is by this fellow. It seems very accurate. th-cam.com/video/RB70RcS0Z7k/w-d-xo.html

It's funny I grew up in a small town and we had one rock station. I hated Boston and Journey (I was into thrash and punk) but I've grown to love them. ...but I don't know what it is, but I still hate Foreigner. I know they are talented and wrote well constructed tunes.. still can't listen to anything they do

Marty, I really love your channel and I think you’re a talented guitar player and I learned a lot from you even considering I’ve been playing the guitar for almost 50 years but I definitely come to the conclusion you don’t or at least you don’t seem to ever investigate songs through Tabs when you learn them, which I guess is a good thing that you learn by ear apparently because several different tablatures from all of the many different writers i’ve searched Tab with this and many other songs, are tabbed very similar and it’s always way different from the way you play it now I know there’s many different ways to play the same song because there’s so many of the same notes on different strings of the guitar unlike the piano, which lays out all the notes out in a linear fashion, I understand the guitar has the same notes located in many different areas of the neck but it always seems like you come up with your own creative individual way of playing these songs, unlike any of the tabs online show how to play it, I’m just wondering if that’s intentional or just that you don’t use tabs at all and figure it out on your own and that’s the way you play it?

    • @Ranch5150SkinWalker

Most players focus more on notes than structure and feel. One must learn these songs to enhance their own capabilities and style. You can get so far in the weeks looking at specifics the entire point of the lesson gets lost. These lessons are for guidance, ear training, structure and technique. I stick as close to the original as possible. Plus there are usually multiple layered parts on these songs so we have to pick and choose what to focus on and get the best bang for the buck.
      Hope that helps!
