My favourite Bowie album, bunked off school in Liverpool on the day it was released, hid on the bus and picked it up at Woolworths in the city. Well worth the weeks detention I received :)

Nice review John. This record will always be remembered as the so-called 'last great Bowie album'. It contains my favourite Bowie song, Ashes to Ashes. Btw, I heard the other day that there is a new Bowie film coming out soon.

Crap, whats the matter with the Lets dance album, super produced album by Nile Rodgers, and his biggest seller!

It was my first (age of 10) , and for me still the best Bowie Album...with the "strong 1. Side" it was interesting to discover the genius of the 2. Side after years (every track is absolutely genius..)

Enjoyed that review! Tom Verlaine from the band "Television" produced the 1977 classic album " Marquee Moon" 🙃

I think Fashion was co-written by Alomar and Davis. I read it came from a jam session the title of which was Jamaica. Enjoyed the review. Thanks.

Bowie was not played often in the Hungarian radio and as I recall Station was the only album of his in the shops, so he was beyond my radar... ohh, and I did not speak English good enough to appreciate the lyrics. Life was hard...:)))

"Fashion" was my formal introduction to Bowie, in a "fan" sense. I'd heard plenty of his stuff around the house - my mother being the biggest Bowie fan, but I heard "Fashion" somewhere and had to have it, so, in '80, at the age of 12, I got this for Christmas and played it to death. And then, a year later, MTV came around and I got to see the videos for "Ashes" and "Fashion" and was BLOWN AWAY. To this day, Bowie still cannot do any wrong. Even his most garbage of garbage albums is Bowie to me. And it all started here.

Both Aladdin Sane and Young Americans had lyrics. Scary Monster is my favourite Bowie album. Cheers, JPE

This is one of my favorite Bowie albums, I enjoyed it much more than previous album Lodger. It's strong from start to finish. Great review and analysis. Thanks for sharing John.

Great review John, always loved this album. For me, my third favourite Bowie work after Hunky Dory and station to station.

Great review. Read somewhere that the rhythm basis for Ashes to ashes was Madness’ My Girl. I believe that the young Duncan was very keen on Madness.

A great album - Ashes, It’s No Game 1 and 2, Scary Monsters are top Bowie songs for me, one track I have never liked is Teenage Wildlife, it’s too long and too much like Heroes.
Aladdin Sane had the lyrics printed on the inner sleeve.

In Fred Seaman’s book, “Dakota Days”, he recounts how Lennon saw the video for “Ashes to Ashes” and was very impressed and also was a bit disappointed he didn’t do something as ambitious for the “Double Fantasy” release (I suppose he may have been referencing the promotional video for “Woman”).

It’s the first album of his that I really was aware of and listened to as a 12 year old.
The whole atmosphere of the album was very influenced by the last Walker Brother’s album “Nite Flights”.

Fantastic video as always John. Would love to hear your thoughts on Julian Lennons new "Jude" Album, I think it would make for an interesting video.

Great album. Never knew that the clown figure from AtA video can be traced back to his album from 1969 (check the cover).
