    The cascade green is very "Pretty" but as Liz Steel put it, "I wouldn't really know how to use it as part of my palette or painting style". I have seen some interesting landscape demos with it but it is not very predictable in it's behaviour and similar effects I can create myself from colours already on my palette. Perylene Green on the other hand I find indispensable as a landscape painter. It works so harmoniously with other greens and yellows (far better than Neutral Tint or Paynes Grey) to provide those darker values or punch in real darks. In fact I use all three - I don't think there is such thing as a 'real neutral' tint, they all have a slight bias. NT works great with Reds and all the earth tones, Paynes Grey is my NT for Blues ...and Perylene Green my NT for greens.

    Thanks for explaining why these two colors are going head to head, as I was quite confused by the title :p Cascade is lovely (and wow to that gauze!) but I cannot live without Perylene Green. It's an invaluable mixing color for me!

      Yes sorry! This season was made up of comparisons that were quite personal to my own situation (I bought the colours, then thought it might be good to make into videos). So some won't make much sense to compare. Season 2 will be much better thought out, and I will be able to take on requests if people are kind enough to maybe send in samples where I don't have any. I love love love the perylene green now too!

    As I am fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest near the Cascade Mountain range I love the Idea of a paint that reflects the colors I see in our hills. I feel lucky to live within a 20 min driving distance to M Graham and Gamblin paint manufacturers and a 3 to 4 hr drive to Daniel Smith in Seattle.

    I would have the perylene green on my palette, because its "flat" hue (and predictability) is perhaps more useful, but Cascade Green is always within reach just in case I need some moody effects all of a sudden :)

    I fell in love with Cascade Green a while ago but these are both equally useful. I will now have to find this Perylene Green to add to the collection. I could see this being useful to replace Paynes Grey in some instances as well as negative spaces in tree-scapes.

    Thank you so much for these series! I'm enjoying them a lot. As a newbie with DS watercolors, I got the "special effect" ones like Cascade Green, Moonglow and Rose of Ultramarine. I love Cascade green so much, it creates so much interest as a wash but after your previous video of the perylene colors and this one, I think I've come to appreciate a lot more the beautiful saturated colors these super dark colors create when mixing with others.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the Perylene colours are so beautiful, and I had no idea about them until I made these videos either. I think they provide a nice deep contrast to all the bright colours and special effect colours.

    I just bought the Colors of Inspirations metal tin (12 colors) that has the Cascade Green. Didn’t really know anything about that color so thanks for this! I also bought my birthday present my parents would give me as it was more convenient for them to do it this way and I already knew I wanted the Perylene Green for it’s own color both in mass tone and watered down and also it’s mixing abilities so this really is the most useful video I’ve seen to this date seeing as I know what I can achieve with 2 colors I already have. Your other video’s are so so helpful for choosing my other colors so thanks for all of them, even if I don’t often comment (think this is even my first comment lol)

    You just confirmed that I need perylene green in my palette! Cascade green is nice as well, but it can be mixed. The way cascade green granulates on the hot press paper is incredible (and not unexpected: granulation is actually most visible on hot press paper.) Loving the showdown, keep posting!

    I prefer the qualities of the Perylene Green that you demonstrated as a palette color. I agree that it has a moodiness. I would probably give myself problems if I had Cascade Green on my regular palette. I loved the unpredictability of it, but for that reason, I'd pull it out only when I knew I wanted those qualities. My tendency when painting from my palette is to be impulsive and I could see myself getting very frustrated if I accidentally chose Cascade Green. Love this series!

      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know EXACTLY what you mean. I feel just the same way about the Cascade Green. I paint quite intuitively from my palette too, and so I can very easily see myself getting into a mess if I pick up too much cascade green.

    I think I need the Perylene Green now. Watching this particular episode, I am wondering if you might consider an addition to future seasons of the color showdowns? The Perylene lifted more where it was not fully dried vs. the dried lift test. Perhaps you may add an extra lift attempt while still slightly damp to test the colors twice? Once while not fully dried and a second once the paper is completely dried.
    Also on a slightly related question, I am assuming you put these test sheets into your printer...would you consider showing us how you make them? Again, I looooooooove these videos!!! Please don't stop!

    I have perylene green and love to use when painting pine trees or mountains in winter. I was so surprised how well it mixes with so many colours. I was yearning for the cascade green and glad I saw it in a new light. I think I will choose Moonglow as my next colour over cascade green, although it has amazing properties I don’t think I would do it justice in my paintings. Thanks for this comparison. ✨🎨💕

    I love Perylene Green (esp, in combination with Rich Green Gold PY129 and Pthalo Green PG7). You get an instant black mixing Perylene Green and Perylene Maroon. I agree with Cascade Green. I love it and it's fun, but it's more of a "special occassion" paint.

    I have both of these colors in my palate. Well, I have one in my main palette, and one in my secondary palette.
    Perylene green is constantly in use for just about everything. Cascade green was in there even though it’s a mix because it’s just one of those that is so hard to replicate and sooo pretty. It got kicked out of the main palette when I added some QoR paints though. I love it for oceans or foliage.

    I have cascade green and I used it often in my landscapes because of how unpredictable it is and it always gives me a nice surprise. I’ve had pyrelene green on my to buy list for a while because of how moody it looks. I’d really love to see a showdown between burnt sienna and quinacridone burnt orange. I personally have both in my palette but I find myself always choosing QBO because of its warmth and staining power. I’ve real enjoyed this series !!

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean about the QBO and Burnt Sienna. To be honest, all the browns look really similar to me, so it would be fun to learn more about the differences between them all :D

  • @FayeWulf
    @FayeWulf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes! Both greens are beautiful mixing colour, Wowwww! I couldn't pick one or the other out of the two (Have added both to my wishlist :P).
    Cascade Green reminds me of a bluer Viridian but not sure if its the lighting or not? and when it dried, thats when the differences really popped out. Wow, that blue separation is such a unique behaviour. I love the colour of Perylene Green but I feel like its a green that can be easily mixed with a small drop of red? or purple? Im not sure what colour off the top of my head to mute a dark green - I think I've seen it a few time while mixing greens though I doubt that would make a beautiful mixing colour after mixing ourselves.

  • @ashseesall5966

    Interesting comparison! I have a half pan of schmincke’s perylene green and a small 5ml tube of the cascade green. I kind of got the cascade just to try out bc i liked the name but didn’t enjoy it as much as my pan of perylene green. I might just pour it into pans and share with friends to finish it faster and get a tube of d.s. Or schmincke p. Green instead haha.

    Oh noooooooo! I don't have either of theeeeeese!!!! I've wanted to get the perylene green, and actually wanted to make a wacky palette of only perylene colors but it turns out I've only got like.... two? And there's a total of maybe... five? Six? Hahah.
    Woah! That perylene green with the quinoa rose?!? It POPPED! So prettyyyyy. Kind of want both!
    Looking at my palette, some things that you could compare: Opera rose vs. Quinacridone Rose. Carmine vs. Alizarin Crimson. Pyrrol orange vs. Pyrrol scarlet. Quin burnt orange vs. Burnt Sienna. They're all relatively similar-ish and might have interesting results! Not sure what paints you have available to you but I suspect a number of them.

    we have a farm with large ponds and I paint and sketch them many times. Perylene green is their color (unlike huge lakes and the ocean you do not get the blue or green effects of color that happens from sky reflections when it comes to ponds of several acres or smaller in sizes) I was spending way too much time trying to get this effect until I discovered this paint. It is an important color in my travel palette as it is also good for painting the shadows in the deep woods and mosses on old black tree trunks and lichen spots on rocks and in a light wash it shows the distant hills. I would think cascade green would be good for ocean landscapes but that is not a part of my daily practice.

      I can look out in any direction and feel motivated to draw and paint which is a good thing to look forward to when cleaning out a stall or fixing the always failing pasture fences.! Yes, we love it here, but anywhere in upstate NY, foothills of the Adirondack Mtns, is so scenic and varied it is why many folks vacation up this way. We are old and have cut back lots on our farm stock due to physical limitations but we have more time for art, music, a bit of gardening, and walking the large acreage of hills, ponds, and pastures. No money, but we feel we have all we need to make a good life at this point in time. It helps to have an appreciation for wabi-sabi because that is essentially how we live.

    The Cascade has some really lovely effects, but that Perylene Green. . . not to be dramatic, but I'm not sure I can live without that color in my life. : ) It's such a gorgeous, deep color, and I love how it mixes. For me, PG is the one I'd put on my palette, with CG to pull out as needed.

    Cascade green is a colour I want for its cool granulating and separating properties, but it doesn't feel like I need it as much as I did Rose of Ultramarine or Moonglow. Meanwhile, Perylene Green I will definitely get eventually for my "goth palette". Those deep, inky mixes are gorgeous! (Also, for the goth palette, I'm thinking M Graham's Naphthol Red is rich and bloody enough to be the red.)

      Totally understand why Perylene Green is so popular now!

  • @soon_to_emerge
    @soon_to_emerge 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Perylene green reminds me of mineral called seraphinite, especially that salt test looks like it.
    I ordered perylene green and perylene violet for me limited palette to dull down or neutralize my brighter colours.
    I like cascade green having this bright blue streak here and there. I feel like I'm not skilled enough to use it properly, so I'll stick to my boring and predictable colours xD

    I absolutely love Perylene green, which I use a lot. But I just bought cascade green just because it is so beautiful. I’m not really sure how I will use it!…Maybe just apply it and enjoy its beauty!

    I love Holbeins Shadow green, which is made with same pigment as perylene green. I'm bit boring painter who enjoys colors that don't do crazy things like two tone granulating. But I paint miniatures, so anything granulating makes huge effect :D

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gosh yes! A granulation on miniatures would look like the earth is cracking! I can see how the predictability of Holbeins are perfect for miniatures.

    The Cascade Green, as you note, is made of phthalocyanine green and burnt sienna. You can make your own mix with those paints. I don't see a need to buy it.

    I think I'll start with the perylene and add cascade whenever I have some money left over... hahahah..yeah I was really attracted to it but I can see by your video and the comments that the perylene would be a safer choice. As you can see, I'm using your videos to make a DS wish list. I have moonglow, quinoa (ha) rose XD and green apetite genuine so far ... want a nice palette of around 12 colours. Any suggestions?

    Oto, I have both and both are in my palette. I use both so I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they are both very beautiful colours. How do you use the two?

    • @ChristinaTodd1970
      @ChristinaTodd1970 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Cascade mixed with greens and yellows for leaves and on its own for backgrounds. I use perylene with lots of water for backgrounds, mixed with PV19's for a dark rich moody purple and on its own for negative painting, contrast, and shading.

    I have perylene green and like it. However, the gauze effect of the other green is gorgeous. Is there a mix I could make to get the other green (?) in this comparison to use in those instances I would like to use for gauzing effects?

    I had been using Holbein Shadow Green and had a "stockpile" so haven't switched to DS Perylene yet - it would be fun to compare those two . . .comparing "apples to apples" . . .Shadow Green is a staple in my palette . . . maybe next season? I LOVE Cascade Green for special effects washes . .. . .and now that I see it with gauze, it gives me some ideas!!! May I ask, when you use your gauze test, do you wet the paper before you put the gauze on??

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the Holbein's shadow green is beautiful. I like it too. Yes I wet the paper first when I put down the gauze.

    Cascade green has never really spoken to me; I have both those colors on my palette and I can mix it if I need it. Perylene Green, on the other hand, is a palette staple for me, I can barely do without it. I use it straight from the tube for evergreens or as a darkening color for looser work, and as a base for mixing up all kinds of botanical greens. I prefer it over phthalo green as a mixing green.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I can see how the perylene green is an easier mixing colour than phthalo. Probably creates much more natural looking colours.

  • @tamasurusrex
    @tamasurusrex ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems like you could just mix the cascade green easily so that’s what I plan to do. There are so many pBr7 varieties, it would be fun to experiment.
    I was trying to read your handwriting in the video, but forgive me, my vision isn’t great! Was that pthalo blue red shade?

  • @JoseGonzalez-wq5jd
    @JoseGonzalez-wq5jd 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Would you happen to know why cascade green can charge more easily into another color than DS colors like thalo blue? Lavenda by Roman Szmal does that too. Curious what other colors do that or if you could make a video comparing colors that do and don’t spread that way. Thanks?

    Before I discovered your videos; I chose cascade green. I already had green apatite genuine and thought it close to perylene green. On seeing this video, I don't think perylene green is anything like green apatite genuine!

  • @pikkuoo
    @pikkuoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To me these two are too different to really make a comparison. These are lovely greens indeed, and if I had the opportunity I'd choose both.
    Although I wouldn't use the salt effect with the Cascade green as in my eyes it looked like some horrible skin condition. 🤤

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ha ha ha yeah I agree with you, salt with the Cascade green was WEIRD.
      I also agree with you about these two being quite different. It was just that I had only one spot let. This current series was made up from comparisons that were quite personal to my own situation & palette. I think there needs to be a season 2 where I can take requests in, if people are willing to share some of their paints with me to do the comparisons with.

    • @pikkuoo
      @pikkuoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oto Kano This has been a truly great and informative series! It would be wonderful to have a series 2, but only in a way that won't require you to buy additional colours just for the series. Maybe you could let people vote for pigments/colours you are willing to compare, like Denise Soden does. I do understand that for a colour addict (me included) any excuse to get new paints is welcome yet problematic. As improbable as it seems, it is possible to own too many paints and the expense would be too high. For what I understand running a TH-cam channel, especially an art channel, is hard work and costly too.
      Does it help you if people let your channel run on a loop?

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I am getting to that point where, to expand and do requests (which I am more than happy to do), than I cannot afford it from my own personal finance atm. Biggest goal is to get this channel monitised, and to do that, yes just running my videos when you want something on in the background is a massive help! Thank you :) I am also going to set up a Patreon account this month to help with the material costs for the channel.

    • @pikkuoo
      @pikkuoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oto Kano Ok. Finland is going to be even more clearly presented on your viewer stats from now on. And I'll certainly became a patron, to the extent my finances will allow me to do so. :)
      There's one really weird thing about TH-cam I'm struggling to fathom: every time I like a video and come back to read comments or just rewatch, whatever, the thump sign has changed back to grey. As far I understand things, it means my "like" has disappeared. So, like now when this maybe the fourth time I'm revisiting this video, I now have had to like it four times. I don't get it, and it irritates the living daylights out of me.

      Aw thank you so much for your support, I have tears in my eyes because you're being so kind!

    I'm crazy or perylene green has a lot of potential for cityscapes? Not only for vegetation but to use in mixes for all kind of neutrals. I think is time to sell another of my relatives to buy some more paints! ;)

    Could you do a showdown if Bordeaux and quinacridone violet?

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh I was wondering about this for my own palette, but wasn't sure people wanted it. I might have to add this comparison back in now. But bascially, I did a quick test of bordeaux with Holbein's Quin Violet and they were pretty similar. Only difference was that the Bordeaux made a fraction brighter mixes. I will be replacing my quin violet with bordeaux. It's such a beautiful colour!
