Me too! I couldn’t get that close but I watched from the crosswalk by Planet Hollywood. Crazy how the whole strip got silent when the fireworks started
I think it was about 1988 when I first stayed in Las Vegas. I stayed at The Dunes. I was in their older tower facing the strip. It was a room on an upper floor facing the strip. I remember sitting on the balcony, viewing The Flamingo and Bally's across the street. I thought that was cool.
Back in that era the traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard was sparse enough that the taxi cab drivers would race each other, weaving around other cars, along The Strip. I personally witnessed that back in the mid-1980s.
The Mirage building looks as if it's about to change The Strip architecture from that point on for a while. It's more impressive, looks more sprawling, and the need to be right curbside of The Strip like everyone is out the door. Also, is it safe to assume a lot of the action in 1988 was a bit more North than it is today?
The way I remembered it, the Mirage and the Excalibur went up together, but here the Mirage is well under way and they haven't even broken ground on the Excalibur. The band was practicing at Las Vegas High School that night.
If memory serves, I think The Mirage broke ground in mid-1987. I had a junior high basketball coach, who hit Vegas almost monthly on cheap junkets offered by either Vegas World or time share companies, who would update us regularly on the "unreal" resort going up next to Caesars. Amazing how it went from massive to comparatively-small over 35 years. Excaliber broke ground shortly after this video was made.
This is Fantastic!! I love Vintage Vegas!! We moved away in 1981 I believe and it was a pretty cool place to a middle schooler! I haven't been back to experience Vegas as an adult....it's a completely different world now! But my old skate rink still going!! ;)
@@LittleMissIssues that’s awesome. I wasn’t born in Vegas but I was raised here and still reside here. I’m 35 and I have fond memories of going on school field trips there during my elementary years! Was not aware that it’s still open. I’ve been living in Seven hills for almost a decade now and haven’t been to that side of town in a while! I think I may be paying them a visit this weekend!! Thanks! 🤩
Wow ! Flying over Las Vegas by plane ✈️ in 1988 before its current version is awesome 😎-I can see the buildings and everything else! Good footage of the city! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Third generation Nevadan and second generation Las Vegan. Crazy seeing my late grandparents' home off in the distance--I wonder what they were doing that night in 1988. My dad did 30 years at Circus Circus as a Director, I wonder if he was working that night!
Year 2024 this year needs to be like Old Las Vegas Nevada 1988 as it won't be soooooo many people and Las Vegas Nevada be soooooo soooooo much better right now and I mean way way BETTER!!!
The way I remember it is that I was 0 years old and supposedly the Pepcon explosion freaked me out in my mom’s belly. But I am glad I got to see some of these places in 1992 before they were gone
The Dunes Golf course. I used to see it alongside driving northbound I-15 in-between Tropicana and Flamingo Rd. Once the Dunes was closed and imploded, The Bellagio was built and opened in 1998.
The golf course where the MGM Grand now is was the Tropicana Country Club (I think). Never played it as it was closed by the first time I came to Las Vegas in 1992. I did get to play the Dunes golf course though. It was a pretty nice course!
How did Vegas world become the Aztec?? I gots know that story. What a downgrade lol Also mirage under construction and Tropicana brightly colored and lit up, we have came full circle
Amazing footage. This is an historical document
Seeing this right after the Tropicana casino emplosion.

How much is the resort fee to watch this?
😅
Yeah! Exactly!
Wow, I didn't see any 6:5 Blackjack, or triple zero Roulette.
Hilarious 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
First time in Las Vegas was January 1989. They still had pay phones.
Just a joke it aint a gambling town anymore like then
hell no double zero roulette
Didn’t see any whiny little bitches either
Back in that era the traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard was sparse enough that the taxi cab drivers would race each other, weaving around other cars, along The Strip. I personally witnessed that back in the mid-1980s.
And you still could ride your bike on the strip.
Yep! Me too!
On the left at 0:30 you can see the Mirage under construction 🙂
I noticed that. And this year the volcano was torn down and hotel sold to Hard Rock 😭😭
My favourite La$ Vega$ Hotel 💰💰💰💰
Now look what they did to my boy :(
That volcano was the coolest thing on the strip.
and today the front of the mirage is all dirt again and treasure island is empty

Love the 80s sci fi soundtrack
How things have changed .Simply Wow !

For the worse I think!
The good ole days, no traffic too.
I was working at the Stardust during this time
Do you remember the Irish band, Brendan Boyer and the Big 8 playing at the Stardust?
Stardust will always be my favorite
Was sad to see it go!

Those mountains in the background, they're the only thing that will remain unchanged...
You said it!
Superstar footage only Vintage can come up with amzing stuff.. Bring these days back
Back then the only thing bad about Las Vegas was all the cigarette smoke.
damn. it was only a couple decades for such a big change.
Third generation Nevadan and second generation Las Vegan. Crazy seeing my late grandparents' home off in the distance--I wonder what they were doing that night in 1988. My dad did 30 years at Circus Circus as a Director, I wonder if he was working that night!
The great old days!
A much better Vegas and time, I so loved Las Vegas back then
Wow how our city has changed and grown!🎰
Crazy thing is i might have been there .. Family holiday from Australia.. I was 13 at the time..
Wow thats amazing, thanks for the upload!
First time I visited Las Vegas was January 1989 when I was 27 years old.
I love videos like this.
Wow just amazing
I miss old vegas cheap food and rooms
This dude is flying like a goddamn fpv drone
What’s the building across from the old Aladdin at 0:17?
The Jockey Club.
The jockey club is still here
Love the old Vegas, the new Vegas is like a sardine can full of hotels. 😅😅😅
0:51 I think I saw Nicky Santoro shaking down a dealer outside the Stardust
They had great food back then!
1988, the year i turned 21, been chasing that first $200 ever since
When Las Vegas was still awesome and cheap to come to!! 😢
Northern part of the Strip looked much more active back then
The Mirage wasn't open but the El Rancho was.
That's Real Vegas
Nice. Sometimes i wish it would be still that way.
Video was probably taken from the old Metro Police helicopter? Crazy!! Anyone else remember Old Wet and Wild?
I remember it on the strip
Me! Got to go there one time in the early 2000s. Lots of fun!
This music reminds of the original Wallstreet movie
Year 2024 this year needs to be like Old Las Vegas Nevada 1988 as it won't be soooooo many people and Las Vegas Nevada be soooooo soooooo much better right now and I mean way way BETTER!!!
awesome
I much prefer these simpler days up until the late 90s
so the other hotels still left are Flamingo, Caesars, and Bally's I believe
WOW! Nice video. Must of had a permit (?) to fly so low?
Looked better then
0:35 the Sands Hotel
That’s the Vegas I remember.
Superman with a go-pro.😮😂
The way I remember it is that I was 0 years old and supposedly the Pepcon explosion freaked me out in my mom’s belly. But I am glad I got to see some of these places in 1992 before they were gone
Where's the Ultra Lux
Vegas has certainly changed. And not for the better.
The I-15 has not been constructed yet
El Cortez still going!
❤
Best vegas dirty clean and smokey!
Is that a golf course around the area where Aria currently stands? Same with where MGM currently stands. Very green area in a sea of desert
The Dunes Golf course.

Was this a drone?
Helicopter
😄 👍
Look at all that cheap rent.😮
Only flamingo and sahara is still there.
The last remnants of old Las Vegas
¿Y esa musiquilla qué? ajaja
They can’t fly like that in 2024
LV definitely looks better with lower population and development.
How did Vegas world become the Aztec?? I gots know that story. What a downgrade lol
Also mirage under construction and Tropicana brightly colored and lit up, we have came full circle
Back when vegas was mostly whites lol
WHEN IS THE CRASH?
