Lovely outro ... a masterclass for me that I will watch many times. I could hear the 12" clarity and oomph at the beginning through my good monitors. When it comes to "practice" amps, this septuagenarian who now lives in a quiet neigborhood is grateful for my pedal platform that is an attenuated Vox nutube with a 12" that I typically sit 4 feet away from complemented by a HXstomp and Iridium, both thanks to your reviews. There was a time that I had a basement music room with an older silverface DR that I ran simultaneously with an AC15. With a Mesa Boogie V-twin pedal in front of the DR...those were the days. In a different room I have a older THR here. If you do do the practice amp comparison, the advice I would give is that placement, typically not in your face, matters hugely. If the THR is in a corner (maybe somewhat elevated even) and I stand 5-6ft away, it is a delight. Sorry for the rambling...but I am in your debt for opening so many sonic doors.

I did the same thing. I sold all my amps except for my Synergy amp head, a ToneX w/ a bunch of captures, and a Boss Katana head just for a portable practice amp (since it has a built in speaker and is powerful enough to gig with as well)
I just kept my cabinet and get everything else I need from the various Synergy modules and pedals, either mic’d up or direct to DI w/ IRs. So much simpler than using my old amp switcher with cables everywhere.

I think we are all a little curious how Jake faired with the Super Reverb and what he did and didn’t like. When adding pedal gain at higher volume can be troublesome and not the right break up we generally look for.

I narrowed my amp collection down two amps and one modeler. My clean pedal platform is a boutique Princeton hand-wired clone that has a 1x12 speaker. This is great for jams, teaching, small gigs, recording, and is a no hassle setup. My "rock and blues" amp is a Friedman Smallbox. It has two channels: 1. Plexi and 2. a hot-rodded JCM 800. At 50 watts with a great master volume, it is a very versatile amplifier. My sole modeler is the HX Stomp.
These three pieces of kit complement one another. For example, I like using the Stomp in 4 CM to integrate its preamps into the FX loop of the Smallbox. This arrangement lets me turn the Smallbox's Plexi channel into a "virtual" three channel amp. My first snapshot is the Smallbox (no HX preamps), which is set to the edge of break up. The second snapshot uses the Stomp Brit Trem preamp for a bit more gain and edge. Lastly, snapshot 3 the is Brit Jumped preamp, which is vintage, dirty lead sound -- think British blues. For effects, I use analog drive and modulation pedals; however, I get delay and reverb from the Stomp. For electric guitars, I have a les paul, a telecaster, a strat, and a 355. If I cannot get sound with all this stuff, I need to rethink things,. Buying more kit is not the answer.

John, you get amazing tones out of the modeling gear. I have tried to profit from the example, with limited success. My amps - mostly vintage Fenders from 1963-67, are all very small and do the job for me and allow me to spend more time on my playing. One other advantage of these small vintage amps - they continue to increase in value, whereas the digital stuff becomes obsolete. Anyway, keep the videos coming!

    • @JosePineda-jn8jk
      @JosePineda-jn8jk ปีที่แล้ว

Digital stuff becoming obsolete is just good marketing. Sure new and “better” stuff comes along but, if you like your sound just stick with the unit. I still use a Gt-1 for live stuff 🤷🏽‍♂️

I keep 2 tube amps and a 1x12 cab. The amps are a Marshall JVM1h (1 watt head) which I can crank at home. When I want to get louder, I have a Victory Countess. For recording, I go direct to the computer with a Line 6 Helix. I found this channel searching for ways to dial in better tones on the Helix.

I’ve sold all of my amps and settled on a fender supersonic custom shop with a vintage 30, it’s got everything in one. I had a ‘67 super reverb, vox ac30/tb 6, and a few others. The clean channel on the supersonic has both a Vibrolux and a Bassman tone stack and the burn channel does everything from a slightly broken up deluxe to a full blown Mesa. I use pedals to really taylor the sound, an original Guv’nor and a UA ruby. I’ve got everything I need in that amp and it does them all incredibly.

Best multi-channel amps I've owned: Suhr PT-100 and Bogner 20th Anni Shiva (KT88). Best clean to clean-break-up: Two Rock Studio Pro 35. Best Clean: '71 Fender Twin. Gorgeous amps.
Now that I'm a home player: Neural Bea and Petrucci for drive and a MixWave Milkman Creamer for clean (thanks to your demo) which replaced the Neural Cory Wong as my clean.

Playing my Fractal FM9 nearly exclusively, I decided to keep one Tube Amp. It was a hard decision between the Brunetti Mercury 1 Head and the Naylor Super Club 38 and I chose the latter one, because it is less obtainable. Both of them are phenomenal Single-channel-Amps without any harsh highs or mids that have a great Mastervolume and can be used as a clean pedal-plattform with a lot of headroom or quite gainy with excellent reaction to the guitar-Volume-knob. I recommend trying both of them out.

I have a few amps I am going to sell. I primarily use a Quad Cortex because it is easy to fire up and plug into, it is compact, it has pretty much every thing I need onboard including a great looper, and it sounds great through my desk monitors. The QC stays. The one tube amp I would keep is pretty interesting. It is a Bartel Sugarland by Mark Bartel, former Tone King guru. It is designed to to give you a blackface sound, a tweed sound, a plexi, and a Vox sound just by adjusting the tone and bass controls. I can't vouch as to the accuracy of this, but it sounds awesome. Reverb and vibrato/tremolo are not part of the Sugarland, so you need a pedal(s) for that. Great video!

One additional practice amp to consider for the shoot-out would be the Blackstar ID:Core series. We've been blown away at the sound and capability at the guitar shop where I work. Very nice stereo spread with the verbs and delays, great versatility, and excellent price point.

Your point about the cabinet being the most influential part of your tone is spot on. This realization led me to selling my powered Kemper as there was no point in having an gigging amp that tries to mimic a billion amps when they all sounded essentially the same played into my cabinet. (Admittedly - a Kemper cab would address that shortcoming) . For my regular amp, I'm using a Freidman Dirty Shirley Mini which is amazingly versatile. If you're looking for a "Marshall", the DS can do most flavors of Marshall with a few simple knobs. (used, they are ~$1000).

    • @DetroitboyTV

I had the Kemper and Kemper Kab, and sold them both. I have a Quad Cortex that I like better than the Kemper for recording but my a Suhr Corso, Victory GK50 - with either a 210 Lexicon stereo cab or Mesa 1x12 Thiele - and Supro Black Magick head and cab are hard to beat in a room.

In my experience of combination of amps/pedals/modellers I'd say that the future is a split system where we use amps as monitors for the feel and "thump". Where I've been the happiest with the sound recently is when I split two lines with modeller going to FOH and send from modeller pre ampsim going to my amp. can keep quiet and hear everything but still have the right feel. any decent amp works at this point as it's not what you hear in your IEMs and it's there just to not make you feel miserable haha! enjoying your videos so far!

I'm at three right now: A 1954 Gibson GA40 that has never left the house, a Quilter Superblock US that has a lot of vintage Fender in it and takes pedals really well, and a Mark V25 head. The latter, while undeniably versatile, is a finicky and well documented pain to dial in. And as I'm not a thrash metal guy, it also has a lot of tones I never use. I plan to sell it soon to finance a Tweed era Fender Pro or Super clone. Fewer controls, easier to dial in, and any extra gain I need can come from a pedal. The older I get, the more I value simplicity.
Edit: Missed one!... a 5W Trinity Triton. Single ended, class A. So four amps all in.

I absolutely love my first gen THR5. It's my main plug in and go amp around the house.
The fewer feature and smaller size makes it a better choice for me than the bigger models. The amp models also seem less heavily compressed when compared to my mate's gen 2 THR10.
I tried a katana mini for a while, but that wasn't for me.

I'm pretty much over expensive boutique gear & so recently I'm using a very cheap Fender solid state stereo combo as pedal platform. I just wanted a stereo power amp & cab to experiment with different tube preamps... Yesterday I decided the Vox Valvenergy preamp pedals are a perfect match, so it's about to be a 4 channel monster rig for ~$550 all in.

I struggle to understand how to use the Catalyst or Katana. One of the big benefits of a HX stomp or Helix is that you can send FOH a modelled amp an IR/Cab so your tone is perfect. How does that work when you shift the modelling to the amp instead? Do they have IR's built into a line out port or something? If you want to do stereo FX do you need to have 2 of them?

I started with a Marshall 100hdfx and a 4x12 back then, went to a JVM205 with a 2x12 Orange Cab. I sold the head because it's expensive to having it checked from time to time, it was heavy, and it was simply too much for hime use most of the time. I sold it, got myself a MicroDark from Orange as a clean platform and started to experiment using pedals. I downsized to a 1x12 Orange Cab, while still keeping the 2x12. It's easier for me to have different flavours of distortion and overdrive in pedals, than having dedicated amps. As soon as I knew what I would want for a pedal platform, I bought the Milkman TheAmp 100, which is powerful, wheighs basically nothing and is pretty versatile for shaping the base sound. I always add a Boss GE-7 before every amp, which I think is the most important thing to me to get what I want.
For now I think that's it. The little Orange for home use and if it's necessary the Milkman for having to play in a band. The possibilitys today really are endless... 😊

I have a Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb, a Custom 57 Champ and an HX Stomp with a Headrush 108 speaker.
Basically a versatile clean amp that is lightweight and practical, a small amp with a ton of the character I love when I'm recording or just want to pack light and go pedal-less, and then an HX stomp that fills all the gaps whenever I'm in the mood for something different.
If I bought another amp, I would like either a fender princeton handwired, just as something to keep and upkeep for life.
I also own a Vox AC15, but I'm probably gonna sell that.

A really underrated brand with great amps imo are Carvin. I found a used Valve Master 100 watt head for less than $300. Has been really reliable and the clean sound is immaculate and the drive sound are great as well but, a little weaker than that perfectly clean channel. I used to own a Carvin Legacy, which for the price used now is also a steal but, I thought I didn’t need that kind of headroom anymore. That was a regret and why I bought the valve master. I don’t use it frequently but, every now and again when I want to just feel the rumble I plug it in and rip (but I do live in a house and have a room out back for music so not apartment friendly at all).

I find myself using my Carl Martin Roadie with my pedalboard most of the time. I’d like a Revv D20, because silent recording and other features, maybe for gigging, too.
Overall, I’m probably aiming for a heads solution, and have a speaker solution, - a Harley Benton 2x12, two different speakers. I’m generally not very happy, whenever I’m using sims. No stubbornness or puritanism. I just find, that sims don’t inspire me. Kinda wish I felt differently. Things would be so much easier in so many ways, and cheaper. But, there it is.

Guitar wise. Twin reverb all day bass wise svt do I use these live. Hell no not anymore in the studio sometimes but as of amps they stay in the house and used very little. I use a hx stomp with either a back line amp or a headrush frfr12 it does the job the headrush works great for bass but I rarely use it as a amp unless the pa really sucks. But for monitoring and rehearsals it works fine.

I’ve owned loads off Mesa Boogies over the years (DC5, Nomad 100 Head, F50, Blue Angel and a Mark 5:25) out of all of them if I had to get one it would be the F50. It had such a beautiful high headroom clean channel and the lead channel was huge. I can see why it got at Gold reward at Guitarist magazine. If you can justify having tube amps, do it. I have tube amps, including a 100W Marshall full stack (with MV), digital modeling including full rigs in a box, amp and effects, and software plugins.
All of my gear options provide variety to make my noise.

I've been trying to get into modelers for over a year now. I've demo'd a few Neural and STL products (which I just couldn't get on with) and bought AURORA Digitals Mr Hector for heavy tones. Its mainly the feel for me. When I track parts with sims, compared to say my MK5, it always feels like sex with a condom comparatively. With this said it is getting better and I'll admit there is a good chance of personal bias at play here but with the amp, it just always feels like I'm capturing my sound compared to some generic sound.

If you have one clear sound you’re after then nothing beats an amp, but if you’re like most and your preferences change frequently, it’s hard to beat a modeler these days. Churning amps is a pain in the ass and costly.

@Jeb_binch there is so much I love about their amps Jeb apart from the awesome sound. The presense control really pushes the sound forward ( rather than make it more trebley like other amps do )..the reverb is voiced so beautifully...and the power switch is such an asset which allows you to push the amp, but with control over the setting you are in. One of the best kept secrets in the amp world

THR series are great practice amps. I'd say the Katana Air is probably pretty close, but the THR30ii is bigger and probably puts out a little more volume. But it doesn't come with a line 6 wireless transmitter, I believe the Katana comes with its own. Being that you have the K Air would be a good comparison candidate.

@MusicalExperimentations hello I own a THR30ii and I really love and enjoy working with it. I've bought a Line6 transmitter to work with the build in receiver of the THR30 and I can work without any cable, any... outside, inside, at the back of my kitchen or anywhere else in my house, and with a Airturn BT200S you can select one of the 5 Prestes (for that you must have a portable device (iOS in my case) with the THR Yamaha app OPENED) and that said (the only limit I find to this - the fact you need the app opened to transmit MIDI orders to select the preset) you can buy one the eyes (or the ears???) closed for working completely free of everything (except your guitar...hihihi) well enjoy it (and the sounds are really really really goods and impressives (impressionnants in French ;-) musically Philippe (from Paris)

A few weeks back Paul Davids had 10 artists play their own backing to a track (he’s done this before). The ability of all the artists is clear, wonderful players… but if you listen to the tones… most are using modelers… they don’t sit quite right (imo) in the track. This to me is the problem… the sonic possibilities are endless… but most ppl aren’t sound engineers. My last album was all modelers and this one I am using amps… for me I can get the tone in my head recorded easier (with amps) and it sounds ‘right’ (to me anyway, lol). I’ll always use both… I’m not anti-modeler, but amp preferererer, lol.

Much more enjoyable than playing my Katana plus I can now silently record also amp head to cabm+ to attenuator.

@@RG-yz8ov…and if you ever dare to try the expensive Fryette PS2 or PS100, you won’t notice losing much if any tone tone at all because it has it’s EQ tweaks. Plus it has the volume control for any volume level rather than preset db reduction. I had a plethora of IronMan ii attenuators with my high powered amps. Wondered what the forum fuss was over the Fryette’s, dared to try one and quickly unplugged all the ToneKing attenuators. Considering how happy I was with Ironman’s I was not prepared for how much better the Fryettes retain the raw/original amp tone. I use them at home constantly to enjoy all

@@djt6546 yeh I've heard ps2 is great but it's a re-amper big bonus would be the effects loop. You could use a little ac4 5watt amp and turn it into a 100 w ac amp with effects loop!! I've never tried a ps2 here in Australia you could get a 2nd hand one for $1000. Do the 6l6 change the tone on say a marshall with el34's or is it really not noticeable. I do like how my ironman mini does not need a power supply, but it does leave me being bound to my 20w marshall head ,ac15 and superchamp.

    • @djt6546
      @djt6546 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@RG-yz8ov I am a firm believe that the type of tube does very little by itself. Now if (like any minute theoretical differences) you design a circuit to specifically exploit certain characteristics that’s why we have some classics and why nowadays people like to generalise about certain amps with specific tubes and other gear. So take any amp, the tonal charm and characterises of the circuit have been finalised by the point of exit at the speaker output. If you then have another power amp that has been designed to do nothing but neutrally re-power, it keeps the original signal as complete as can be. Sure anyone would rather have something passive doing the job. A purist might argue Fryettes are re-amping so it’s not the same as a fundamental attenuator. But like anything in life, we can all read the specs and reviews but seeing/hearing is believing. Try a Fryette power station and I bet you won’t care how it’s doing it, only that it manages to retain your driven amps tone and feel as true as can be while reducing volume to taste. It just works better at retaining the raw/natural tone of an amp and yes they are an even better investment for pairing with vintage amps to add an effects loop. 👍
