The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course: rtw-adventures...
We all know how important is hygiene on a long motorcycle trip. In this video, I will tell you the easiest way to keep yourself clean on a long adventure trip.
Listen, I cannot just let you go like this, I will help you to find the right formula, but before that let me tell you something interesting:
As you know on my trips I meet a lot of people. Usually, they try to provide everything for me to feel comfortable: Here is the bathroom, kitchen, fridge…Is this room or the bed is big enough for you? If not we can give you this or that and I usually say: Don’t even worry about me, I am a motorcycle rider, everything is good for me, even a tent!
I am asking you now, are you a motorcycle rider or you are one of those fashion primadonnas who cannot travel without the most important cosmetics?
The first and the very important is to know that there are washing machines, water and soap everywhere around the world. You don’t need to carry tons of clothes, because you don’t want to stink!
If you take a shower and wash your clothes you will never stink! On the other hand, it doesn’t matter how many sets of under ware soaps, lotions or perfumes you have with you if you never take a shower you will stink. That simple it is!
Let me show you what I have with me on any trip and it doesn’t matter how long it is. I am not saying that you should have exactly the same, but the important is to get the idea.
I have two towels, very light from microfiber. Toothbrush, toothpaste, very small, dry stick, soap, ear cottons and nail cutter. That’s it! I don’t need more. All of this fit in very small back, which helps to reduce the overall weight.
I have with me three sets of under ware and socks. What I do is taking the shower every night, or every time when I have the chance. Wash the under ware and the socks while I am in the shower. Usually they are dry on the next morning, because I use synthetic materials, except the socks, I always have cotton socks. If for any case they are not dry I use the spare.
After the shower I use this dry stick to prevent from sweating and that’s it until the next evening.
I have seen riders skipping the evening shower and do it every morning and after that they wear their dirty riding gear, why? What is the logic? It might work perfectly when you go to work with clean clothes and your car, but with motorcycle…

    Hi Pavlin, great videos,
Cut 2 centimetres off the handle of your toothbrush. Nobody needs toothbrush with full length handle.

At the very beginning I was thinking. Toothbrush, toothpaste, towel and bar of soap. That's what you get in military and you'll live decently with them. Anything else is luxury.

Yeah, I'm ex-army. I even skip the towel. A t-shirt or scarf works fine and they're easy to hand wash and dry quickly unlike a heavy towel. You just cannot carry extra crap on a long march.

Hi Pavlin. There is one more thing that you may consider adding in one of the next videos, and it might be the riding gear hygiene. Something like the helmet cleaning, jacket, boots and so on. I know that there are other videos on the TH-cam covering this topic, but it is always useful to see it from someone else's perspective... Cheers and thanks for the riding tips!

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Well...there is nothing I can add on this topic. I almost never clean anything, the rain do it for me. Sometimes, if it doesn't rain I just splash it with cold water to remove the mud and the dust. Wash it once per year, usually when I comeback from long trip.

This is a smart topic and vloggers only talk of hygiene in passing. Btw, I'm a biochemist who has worked in micro biology labs. Showering/bathing/using a wash rag and a sink are all ways to remove bacteria. Excess bacteria is what makes us smell. As bacteria "breathe", they emit the smell we all associate with body odor.

Hi Pavlin, I like your basic toiletry kit but I add a pack of wet wipes and a small hand sanitiser for those times that you want use a toilet in a rest stop and find it has been vandalised, there is no toilet paper and no water to wash you hands and the toilet is a compost type that does not need to be flushed but the seat is covered in human sewage. Or you roll into a rest stop at late at night and the toilets are locked to prevent vandalism? By rest stops, I refer to little parks off the side of a highway that has a car park, toilet block and a bit of cleared ground to walk around and stretch your legs and is in the middle of nowhere. What do you do?
The other thing to consider is if you have been riding through a desert or semi-desert in Australia and have been delayed because of punctures, picking up dropped bikes, water stops, etc. and don't want to ride thought the night because that is moronically stupid as there are suicidal kangaroos, cattle, camels, sheep, and other retarded animals that think bright lights and roads are the best place to be and kill you, you stop before dark and make a camp for the night, but because of the delays and you didn't reach the way-point in time, your water is low?
The solution? Wet wipes and hand sanitiser. And a bit of toilet paper. You can use a wet wipe with a few drops of hand sanitiser backed by a bit of toilet paper to clean some off the stink in your arm pits because your deodorant only covers the smell, not reduces the sweating that bacteria feed on to make the stink. The other bit is a a wet wipe or two can be used to give your face and hands a bit of a clean-up after a long ride in the desert. There could be cleaning solutions for stuff I mentioned in the first paragraph but I am not going to touch that. As for wet wipes, I get the size I like and use the ones that can be flushed/used in the general suburban sewerage system, septic tanks and compost toilets. And maybe on stinky babies.
Besides, toilet paper is pretty crap for making fires but with some hand sanitiser you should be able to get a fire started if you have some skills.
    You get the idea.

Yep, totally agree, travel as light as the trip will allow. How much you pack does of course depend on the trips length and your accommodation. If you're staying in hotel/motel/guesthouse or friends houses you can get away with packing almost bugger all hygiene products. But if you can't afford a hotel or have friends houses to stay in along the way you'll be camping and will need a bit more. But even so, if I'm only away for a week or two, even camping, if I use aeroplane travel size containers I can get all my hygiene stuff in one of those aeroplane carry on little plastic bags and not be short of anything and that includes a small travel shave kit. Well apart from the toilet paper that is and I never go on a trip without toilet paper. In the past I've stopped at too many service stations, public toilets and campsites etc that havnt had any!
Yes, less is more. Usually 😉

But after a while, my jacket and my pants smell like hell (jacket on my back and pants on the back and knees). The worst thing is that I wash it, it drys half of the day. And ride with the wet gear in a hot day make the smell even worse. Do you have any advice?

In the US long haul truck stops are quite useful. you can get a shower, and do laundry with a stop there and there are quite a few sprinkled all over. I carry only one kind of soap with me on a road trip and that is something simple like Dawn dish soap. It can wash dishes, clothes, body and hair so it reduces how much you need to carry. You can always stop at a state park, or a campground. They almost always have showers there. One exception I did find in the National Park system was Capitol Reef National Park. They have bathrooms there, but NO showers. The closest showers from there are 11 miles away in one of the hotels available.

An obsession with washing and hygiene is for neurotics and women. These sort of people should stay in resorts. Indeed, it's been shown that too much cleanliness is unhealthy. I carry even less than you. Instead of a towel I use a keffiyeh which has many other uses (sun block, scarf, minimal garment, pillow even). A small amount of paper towels(which have many other uses including cleaning dishes and other items) are more efficient than toilet paper and you can even dispense with this method of removing waste when you learn techniques from other cultures. I bathe when I can but when I do stink and cannot get a shower, localized washing of the odorous parts and a liberal application of deodorant suffices. I have gone weeks without a shower without complaints!
