I have about 75 Archontophoenix alexandrae palms (singles, doubles, and triples) and about 20 A. cunninghamiana palms growing on my 5.60 acre property. My tallest ones are now about 25+ feet high overall. As far a crownshaft palms go, A. alexandrae and A. cunninghamiana are my 2nd and 3rd (respectively) favorite palms following Roystonea regia. All but for a few of the above palms were grown from seed. About 18 years ago I gave a friend a 7 gallon size A. cunninghamiana. My friend lived (he since moved) in east Palatka, Florida, on the east shore of the St. John River. He planted the palm on the south side of his house, about 50 feet from the river. Being in such proximity of the river this palm didn't experience any frost and grew to 20 feet in height the last time I saw it.

A mature A. cunn. can probably take down to 25 degree for short duration. If you plant one it would be best to plant it under high tree canopy and on the south east side of a house (blocking cold air from the N.W.).
I brought my three foot tall King from Fort Lauderdale and took with me in my move to Mandarin five years ago. I have not given it the attention it deserves but it has been covered every freeze and has survived... I just need to do better on feeding it which I will wait to do until March.

In January 2018, at this time I had this palm growing in a 3 gallon container left it out, exposed to the Winter elements, with back to back nights of 26 degrees, followed by 27 degrees with the temperature at or below 32 degrees for 10 hours. The result was that my palm passed the test and survived. Currently that same palm two years later, is in a 15 gallon container standing over 6 feet in height! 🌴. I live in St. Augustine and I searched NE Florida far and wide for a Cunninghamiana due to its increased hardiness compared to the Alexandrae. I actually ended up ordering a small one from Etsy. I am curious to see if after this winter we can get some reports on the hardiness of the Alexander version in north Florida.
I just lost a Christmas Tree Palm to the back to back freeze we had last month. How did your King Alexanders do this year? I'm interested in switching to the King Alexander because of its hardiness.
King Alexander palms are much hardier than Christmas palms. Christmas palms will die back below around 30*F while King Alexander Palms can survive down to 25*F and even lower once established or if planted near a home or wall. Edit: That said, I would not plant one if your area commonly gets below 24*F. For those areas stick to queens or pygmy date palms. One last thing, planting under large trees such as oaks will buy you about 2 to 3 degrees of temperature in the winter. So if you get down to 23*F it is more likely to be about 25*F under a large oak canapoy. Same principle applies to planting on a south facing wall.

Fertilize with palm fertilizer that may require more than just one type for them to get the micronutrients they need.

What is the difference between archontophoenix cunninghamiana and archontophoenix alexandrae.
The Alexandra has a thicker trunk and a more tightly spaced frond with a slight silver underside.
