One of the most beautiful palms without a doubt, I absolutely love them and always so cool to see them in California, I've seen some gorgeous ones there. Thanks for sharing, incredible palms!
here in SW FL The Royal palms grow huge up to 70+ feet. The thing that impressed me the most is that the huge royals and foxtails withstood hurricane Ian's (160mph) winds. They are not only beautiful, but a very hardy bunch.
Nice Find. If you are still in La Jolla go to 205 Kolmar St. I planted the Royal Palm and the two Pandanus in 1980. There used to be three royal palms but a painter they hired killed them cleaning his paint brushes.
I am on it. I actually have a list of Royals I want to go see in person all over. I believe that is the tree of the future for San Diego as long as that palm beetle doesn't eat it also
Very nice video. Is there anyway to number them by top number 1, 2, 3 and so, with their name and location please. I am planning to grow 5 acres of the top 10 best palm trees. Thanks
@@nicolassaarni88 Along with South Florida. The official palm "bible" (The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms, Second Edition, by Paul Craft et al) states: "widely distributed in the southern tip of Florida in Collier, Monroe and Miami-Dade counties." So yes, you are correct in that they are native to Cuba. I am also correct in that they are also native to South Florida. They are also native to Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Cayman Islands, Bahamas and in general, the Caribbean islands.

Hey Gary! Wanted to ask you if a royal palm could grow well here in Mallorca Spain in the Mediterranean. Temperatures in winter averages 60 on the day time and 46 at night time rarely gets bellow 37 degrees. I’m my garden it would be sheltered bellow tall tree canopy and there’s mountains protecting on the north side. I live 1 kilometre from the sea
That sounds like you have a decent chance. Those trees love winter heat of any form so if you could put it in full sun in front of a sunny building or in a courtyard, you will build up extra heat and have an even better chance.
@@ScaryHairyGary Yeah right the problem is that I dont have a lot of sun in my garden so i prefer to not put a royal in my garden i will just put a couple of king palms. i supose that they will do a lot better than a royal in my climate, although i know about one big 20 year old royal in my island pretty much like the ones you are showing in your video. wich variety you think that works better the cuninghamiana or alexandrae?
@@brandonCR3980 hey Brandon! I own a house close to Arta. I will try a Roystonea regia there in the next months. Where can I get a Roystonea regia in Mallorca?
@@ScaryHairyGary thanks! I Love your Videos. I am from Germany. Only Trachcarpus grows here. We bought a house in Spain with a garden. I am planning the Landscape an King Palms should grow there.
@@ScaryHairyGary Yes, these are beautiful too. This year i bought 3 germinated king palm seeds on ebay, and for now, they have only the first leaves. Now I have them indoors because of the winter. I live in Lisbon, Portugal.

Interesting to know they stood up to the hurricanes. I guess they evolved within hurricane Alley so they have evolutionarily adapted.
Hello Gary, would that roystonea oleracea have a chance in central valley california, zone 9b
As long as it stays above 27°. It would love the heat. I have plants in 24 inch boxes at my nursery in Vista in north county San Diego.

I have roystonia oleraceae. even better

Do you think a royal palm could thrive in 9b? Fresno, CA.
I think it has a really good chance especially if you plan it on the south or west side of a big tall masonry building within about 5 to 25 feet.
Second greatest palm in the world, and amazing to think they are naturally from South Florida!
They are native to Cuba

On a Palm forum they showed a pretty big and healthy looking Roystonea regia in Athens. The Winters are similar to Mallorca i think.
@@brandonCR3980 where is that palm exactly?
I love these palms. Need to find some place to buy these in North OC in a 5-15 gallon pot size.
I have some really nice Roystonia oleraceae in 15 gal in Vista and they are even prettier than regia. gary@goldengatepalms.com

You mean the one you used to have??? We should have bulldozed your house to make room for that tree.
I prefer King Palms, they`re more similar to coconut trees 😉🌴
