Connecting an Antenna to your NOAA Weather Band Radio

  • The National Weather Service maintains over a 1000 transmitters that broadcast important weather information and alerts 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These broadcasts can be picked up with a NOAA weather radio like this one. But while there is coverage for almost the entire united states and territories, there are some areas where the signal may be weak, or reception might be difficult inside concrete or metal buildings like factories, schools, or hospitals. Using an external antenna will greatly improve your reception if you live in a weak signal area or building.

    Electrical tape does not provide a weather seal. It will break down and get very brittle when exposed to the elements over an extended time. It is best to use a proper sealant to protect the connection from water intrusion.

    Is there anything we can do to help increase the amount of signal getting into the weather band portion of a portable multi unit AM / FM / Weather band radio? Regular weather band radios are nice and all but they’re not really meant to be portable. Just what does the weather band internal antenna look like in one of these radios?

  • @kraig8812

      Television antennas are broadbanded and the weather frequencies are just below channel 7. That's a good way to repurpose an unused antenna.

      Yeah a VHF antenna can also pick FM radio too just in case all of your local stations go down due to a power outage. Plus being able to pick out of town stations / cities still have power. Good to know if you have any people on life supporting medical devices. Plus the weather band isn’t really all that far above the FM band.

    I am having a hard time picking up NOAA radio in my tractor trailer anymore. I have a cobra 29 LX and it use to pick up NOAA radio good with all the alert alarms... now nothing... AND on a side note my WR-120 I had for years keeps telling me bad reception on the stock antenna... (No matter where in the house I put it), and also it never use too... I live between Norton, MA and Albany NY NWS. I am not sure what is going on, but it seems like reception to my area of western MA has changed on their side...

    I bought a Midland WR-120EZ radio to replace my 74-109. I can't get the darn thing to give me alerts. The old one still gives alerts but the voice is a bit garbled so we replaced it. I took the first WR-120EZ back to the store, figured it was just a bad radio but the replacement one still will not give me alerts. (With all the snow yesterday and lots of advisories and warnings it never sounded, not once and it always says "NO MESSAGE") I can't put up an outside antenna, but need some booster, I assume, but inside the house. What is wrong with my radio?

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe there is some interference or something else that is preventing reliable receiving of the weather broadcasts. Try moving the radio to another location or in front of a window to see if that makes a difference. Does the radio work outside? If you can pick up a signal outside, then there might be something inside the house causing interference.

      The J-Pole is an omnidirectional antenna, so it will receive equally well in all directions. Any bit of directivity you get from the stub at the bottom of the antenna is so slight that you probably won't notice a difference by rotating it.

    CQ CQ CQ Question for you guys. I work at the hospital and I’m looking for the best weather radio available on the market. We have Midland WR300 hooked up to a VHF antenna on the roof, less than 20 miles from transmitter, and with a clear line of sight. The Midland is noisy at best with lots of distortion on the strongest signal, which is channel 4. When I hooked up my BAOFENG UV-5R on the antenna tuned on 162.475 MHz (ch. 4), reception was clear and crisp, so a LOT BETTER than the Midland. I read online that Reecom makes good weather radios, is that true? If I can’t get a better radio, I think I’ll install a VHF Yagi with a 160 MHz Band-Pass Filter, or even change the ceramic filters/caps for better ones. What is your advice? 73

      Undo 4 screws on the bottom. There was a screw that both secured the antenna to the case and to a wire. The wire is the important part. You could stick the wire out the hole and bolt the antenna to the now loose wire... and use duct tape.

    May I ask how you run your coax through your house ?

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My solution may be a little more extreme than most, but I drilled a 2 inch hole near where the house sits on the foundation and installed a service entrance and weather head for just coax. This is separate from my electrical service entrance. This gives me a flexible method of adding and removing coax for my station. This might be overkill if you need only one or two feeds to enter the house, so maybe a smaller hole with an electrical junction box installed on the outside of the house may better fit your needs.

    • @KB9VBRAntennas

      Lightning is very fickle and can be attracted by any number of things. This antenna is no more attractive to lightning than an exterior mounted television antenna or satellite dish. You can reduce the chances of a lightning strike by properly grounding the antenna and using a lightning arrestor where the cable enters the house.

  • @chrishenning9893

    Not sure that it makes much of a difference for a weather radio with a short cable run, but radios use 50 ohm cable, not 75 ohm like RG-6, which is used for TV RF signals.

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't really make a difference. The mismatch is very minor and 75 Ohm cable will work perfectly fine for receiving with little change in performance. If you were to transmit with a 75 Ohm cable your SWR would be 1.5:1 which is still within the acceptable limits of most transceivers. if you want to get into the more technical aspects of this‚ I've got an article on my blog you may find interesting: www.jpole-antenna.com/2015/01/28/using-rg-59-or-rg-6-catv-cable-with-an-amateur-radio-antenna/

      Cable TV splitters are broadbanded and you can use those to distribute the signal to multiple weather radios. keep in mind that you are also splitting the signal strength between two or more receivers. If you have too many splits, you will end up with a very weak signal at the receiver.
