I personally loved My Sister, the Serial Killer, but I think it’s quite different from your ‘usual’ mystery/ thriller. I don’t necessarily think I would put it in that category. I’m curious to see what you think.
It's great to push yourself out of your comfort zone with your reading, you often get nice surprises that way! A lot of books I've picked up with zero or low expectations have become some of my favourites. Fantasy is still my favourite genre but it's good to mix things up!
Ugh, this year’s winners list has confirmed my utter dislike of the goodreads awards. I enjoy watching your challenge videos but personally I won’t be reading any of this year’s winners.
I think it would be really cool to get a reading vlog every time you read one of the books and then your video at the end of the year wouldnt have to be as long too
I read The Huntress last month and it was really good. I liked that it was a WWII book that took place AFTER the war and not during. The character Nina in that book is one of my favorite characters ever. I hope you enjoy it! Also The Five was amazing!
Give middlegame some time. I spent the first quarter of the book trusting the author was going somewhere and was not disappointed. It’s great, but takes time to get in the groove
excited to see your results at the end! loveed this years, always get new book recommendations from you!! Although I am going say that just because someone didn’t “mark” a book off as read or rate it, doesn’t mean they didn’t read it....
I feel weirdly personally invested in you liking Red, White and Royal Blue. I think I like romance a lot more than you (low bar though lol), but I honestly think the book is really well written - the politics, the character building, family relations, and overall writing is really good. Really hoping you like it, for your sake too (I always have so much awe when you read books you don't think you'll like, I could NEVER). Good luck with the challenge this year!
I really liked the Nickel boys. Really important book to read I think. It's heavy to read with a very hard topic, but it's a must read to understand the black/white struggle in the USA I think.
I loved The Wicked King, it was the book I voted for. I thought it was much better than The Cruel Prince, but since you didn’t like the first book I don’t think you should read the sequel.
I enjoyed Nickle Boys. I'm going to do some form of a Goodreads challenge. Not 100% sure on what yet. I do agree with you before voting on Goodreads you should read more than 1 book in the category.
I enjoyed Red, white & royal blue this year and I usually dislike romance in books and I am less likely to pick a book up if it has romance as a main plot point. It’s really good. Also a genre I don’t really read is memoir but Jonathan Van Ness‘ was so good. I loved it. He was honest and his personality came through!
Oooh this is such a fun idea and also hard agree on Recursion, loved it! Just got the Pines as I’ve read Dark Matter before too and thought I’ll give it a go it better not disappoint 😂
It's the only other book (series) I enjoyed by him! I hated all his other older books so far lol Be prepare to binge read all 3! And the tv show is not too bad!
BookswithEmilyFox oh that’s actually reassuring to hear, I’ve been avoiding reading his older things including Pines as I’ve hear mixed things! But I also love his books and need more so glad to hear it’s good! X
I really likes "This is how you lose the time war", it has romance but the writing for me really made it great. It has some cool elements. Gonna try to read some of them too.
I spent way too much time last night going through the lists and deciding which ones to try to get to next year. Fortunately, several are already on book club lists and/or sitting on my shelves, so those are gimmes. I am going to attempt all of the categories, so we'll see how that goes.
Your challenge inspired me to do the same, just for myself because I often only have read one book from all of the books and that one usually didn't even win its category. So from January to June that will be my challenge. Although only doing the categories I care for and a couple I like to read more off.
Yes! I went to vote on Goodreads, but I only voted in one category because I read only one of the books mentioned! I did not want to vote on books I haven't read because I don't know anything about them. I couldn;t say if they were a winner or not. Voting in the Goodreads award is just a way to vote for the author's name you recognize and they automatically win!
Very interested to hear your opinion of Imaginary Friend! It was my least favourite book I've read this year, and arguably even my least favourite book of the decade! 😩
I'm actually reading right now "The Middlegame" and " Gideon the Ninth". If they remain to the end as good as they are now, they will both be in my top 10 books of the year :) I hope you'll enjoy them as well!
I just want to recommend the Mercy Thompson series which had book 11 in the fantasy category. Despite 11 plus books it’s a great urban fantasy series with great characters/plot/world building that’s easy to devour (I can get through the whole series in about a week) I liked it from book 1 but it definitely improves with each instalment so even if you don’t care for the first book much (which some don’t as it’s not the best) they’re such quick reads it’s easy to read and get to when they start getting amazing (which are most of the books imo)
I really hope it’s not as bad as it might look with the amount of people voting for a book and the amount of people who have read them. As far as I understand it because the voting happens in three rounds every reader technically has three votes per category, so if Night House has 21k rating it could get 63k votes if everyone who rated it voted for it in every round. Also if you read a book and don’t give it a rating you will not be counted among the ratings statistics. I am not saying the people didn’t vote for books they haven’t read, but I don’t think the majority do that.
The Nickel Boys is great, I hope you read it! I really do not understand the hype about Recursion but whatever x) I'm interested in reading most of the SFF nominees for once this year so that's exciting :)
I think Red White and Royal Blue will have enough interesting non-romance elements that you may actually enjoy it (kinda like ACOMAF) As for Nickel Boys, it doesn’t really read like most historical fiction, but if you can wrap your head around the writing style it’s definitely a story that needed to be told
For best humor, you might consider Felicia Day. I haven’t read the new book, but the first one from a few years ago was great, and I think you would like the previous one, (I think it’s called “you’re never weird on the internet”), and maybe you will like the new one too
I plan to read a few of the ones you chose, I but I like to read the ones the fewest people voted for in each category. Why? Sometimes popular books don't resonate with me. For instance, everyone raved about the Twilight series and when I read the first book, it made me question why I ever learned to read in the first place.
I felt much the same way about The Cruel Prince as you did but, to my surprise, I really enjoyed The Wicked King- it was much better. I'd give it a shot personally. It's a quick read anyway!
@@twistinyourside Yeah. Maybe if there would be 2 books intead of one it would looked better but i think that Jude character dissapeared completely and she became statistic dull romance character.
It’s really disappointing that the award is a popularity contest. I’m hoping they find a way to change the system. I would however highly recommend the nikel boys it was incredible!
I’d love for you to read Black Leopard Red Wolf from the Fantasy section. I’d appreciate your thoughts on such a devisive book. You always have such honest, nuanced, and well articulated opinions! 😊 And I’d give the Wicked King a chance! It’s certainly better than Sorcery of Thorns haha. Talk about a boring book!
I decided to challenge myself to read the top 10 debut novels. I've read 9/10, waiting on the last one from the library. From the top 20 I've actually read 3 more, so 12 total. I do recommend red white and royal blue, it's fun in a fan fiction kind of way. I don't think it should have won debut though, I think A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum was the best of the top 10, so I recommend reading that. Other 5 stars for me from that category were Queenie and Fleishman is in Trouble, so I think you should give those a try!
you should do a challenge where instead of reading the books who won or were in the second or third place, you should read the book on the list with the highest rating (even if it0s in the last place) :)
Regarding Daisy Jones & the Six: I didn't read any of the other historical fiction nominated, and I haven't read the author's other book yet, but I read fifteen new (2019) books this year and I thought Daisy Jones was the best of the bunch
I don't know if you'll enjoy Red, White and Royal Blue haha. Romance isn't my favourite genre at all but I am a big sucker for certain tropes so I did love it. But if you generally dislike romance, it's pretty sappy and I found some of the sex pretty graphic too (though not cringey and actually well-written). But it is really funny and there's a lot more to it than just a romance so... you never know.
I liked it, but definitely don’t think it should have won. Especially compared to the other books in the category (and the fact people clearly didn’t read it)
@@Victoria-pt4io I liked it too, but it came out in Fall right before voting, no way should it have won. Not enough people could have even read it, much less loved it to all vote for it. (Not that its a bad book but even if 40k read it they wouldn't all be positive reviews). Goodreads should really change that.
I think I am going to do a few less categories this year and focus on the winners and not the other nominees since I only read 40-50 books a year and most of them I'd like to be from my already established and very long TBR. There's still a few from this year I didn't get to, plus series that I need to start. And some of the nominees that didn't win I've been wanting to read anyways. Will you be doing the Fox Book Club on goodreads still?
Secret Commonwealth started out so strong but felt like such a middle book, plus it had one of my least favorite tropes throughout 😩 am I still Pullman trash and will immediately buy the next one? Absolutely.....HDM is my favorite series but The Book of Dust is only holding my interest because of nostalgia which sucks.
You should also try reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf in the fantasy category! It’s definitely weird writing but it’s so worth it, it took me out of my reading slump and it’s the first book in a trilogy i’m excited to hear your thoughts on Five Feet Apart, i don’t think i’ll ever be able to read/watch that story because my brother has CF and i KNOW it’ll hurt me lol I Wish You All the Best was my vote for the YA category, it was so sweet and wholesome, plus i’ve never seen a non binary YA book before so i think it’s a good starting point for the future. I love this challenge! I might attempt to do it too but we’ll see 😬😬
Honestly, i love the idea, but I have far too many older books/series i'm interested in to focus on new books. I'm interested in a few new ones here and there (Starless Sea, King of Scars, Sorcery of Thorns) but there is just too much backlog i have to get too first. The only 2019 released books I actually read in 2019, were Priory of the Orange tree and Starsight. The only 2020 book i'll definitely get to is Stormlight Archive 4
That's why I'm seeing it as a challenge! If I only read the minimum (15!) that's still 15% of my usual reading but if I read all (40) that's... a lot lol we'll see how it goes!
@@BookswithEmilyFox Oh yeah it sure is a daunting challenge :D But I guess i'm just not up for it yet, i'm too stuck in my comfort zone. (YA) Fantasy, Sci-Fi and the occassional classic, haven't read much else this year. 2020 might be a good chance to dabble in other genres, but maybe i'll take a smaller challenge that doesnt consist of AT LEAST 15 books. Kudos to you tho, alreasy excited for your awardshow in 2020!
I love Caitlin Doughty's books! I bought Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?, and then listened to it on Scribd because I couldn't wait for it to come in. It was great.
Why are people voting for books they haven't read? I couldn't vote for fantasy this year sadly because I did not read any of the books... I am currently in the middle of Ninth House though, and so far I do like it, but we'll see I still have about half of it left. Maybe next year I've read more of the books, but all the books I am interested in are always released at the end of the year and then I don't have the time lol but maybe I try to at least read the fantasy books from 2019 I am interested in and do my own challange with it. Oh its sad to hear that the secret commonwealth is disappointing... I will pick it up some point soon probably in January we'll see
Red, White and Royal Blue is just so dang cute. Like....unless you absolutely hate romance, I don't know how you can't NOT like it. I liked Ninth House, but i am also super salty it won.
Five Feet Apart didn’t become a movie. It started as a movie and they novelized it. On principle I won’t read it because of that. But... hopefully you will enjoy it!
I love Goodreads and use it every single day but this competition is so flawed (as you point out). As such, I don't really want to read these books because I don't trust that they're truly good. I will trust your opinion though, so I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Question: how many times does your vote count in the goodreads awards? Because there are three rounds and if you vote for the same book that’s three vote for that a book.
Will my cat eat my eyeballs is one of my top 3 fave books of the year! Caitlyn Doughty is so funny and the book is super interesting. I recommend her other two books if you haven’t ready them yet. :)
BookswithEmilyFox her first book is a memoir called Smoke gets in your eyes about her time as a crematory worker + lays the foundation for her position as a death positive activist. Her second book explores death related culture and tradition across the world. She also has a super binge worthy TH-cam channel called Ask A Mortician :)
It may make you feel better about the amount of votes vs. how many rated it if you think about how many people that have read it but didn't rate it. It isn't required on Goodreads to rate a book when you mark it as read, and I forget to rate books all the time lol. This may be the case with a lot of people that have read the books.
@@BookswithEmilyFox I think you can rate a book without marking it as read. But I know you can mark a book as read without rating it. I don't think the number of ratings listed on Goodreads take into account all the people that read it but didn't rate it
Ninth house was disappointing to me! The huntress is a good read historical fiction is my jam so I love books like that and its hard for me not to gravitate towards them! On the come up is good and if you like the hate you give, dear Martin is also amazing told from a guy's perspective. I just put three books on hold because you reminded me I need to read them. I agree that the voting system for the Goodreads best is rigged. I won't vote if I haven't read many or any in a category as I don't feel like I am informed or read enough to do so so others just voting for certain authors is infuriating to me. And my goal is always 100 too and I think this year I might make it there as I will hit my goal of 90 this weekend for sure.
I chose 13 categories only and chose about 2 books from each category. I don't want to read any children's book and I don't think I chose any YA or cookbooks. I'm also most excited about the Science and Tech category. So many good books nominated this year. I am sad I didn't get around to many of them this year but that just makes a good list for next year :) P.S. I have a feeling the ending of My Sister, the Serial Killer will make you mad XD
Umm... Does the number of ratings show the number of people who have read the book? I read a lot of books but don't rate them. I just add them in my 'read' shelf
Daisy Jones was a great book but I don't get the hype, I preferred The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo sooo much more. I think the interview format kind of distanced me from the characters and I just wanted more, Evelyn Hugo felt a lot more real to me. Could also be that I watched too many rock n roll movies and it was too predictable for me, not sure haha. Also totally agree, the goodreads awards are definitely a sad popularity contest !
I'm interested in the Red Sister trilogy, The Priory of the Orange Tree and The Starless Sea, in fantasy and Children of Ruin, and This is how you lose the Time War in Sci-fi.
I have never ever in my life have heard Gideon pronounced in such a fancy way
"When in doubt, pronounce it French"
- Me
I look forward to you pronouncing names in French when you can't in English. Do a video in French for this channel at some point please!
I made some on my beauty channel a while ago (Beauty with Emily Fox) if you search for that and french you'll find them lol
-"Girls stop apologizing" which will never happened because I am Canadian, I will apologize for anything and everything" hahhahhahah
Could my TBR be any longer!? Why, yes. Yes it could.
ALWAYS!

The whisper man was great I'd highly recommend it
Read Verity from Colleen hoover. It's a romantic thriller. I really liked it.

probably Stephen King and some series continuations knowing goodreads

It’s definitely weird writing but it’s so worth it, it took me out of my reading slump and it’s the first book in a trilogy
i’m excited to hear your thoughts on Five Feet Apart, i don’t think i’ll ever be able to read/watch that story because my brother has CF and i KNOW it’ll hurt me lol
I Wish You All the Best was my vote for the YA category, it was so sweet and wholesome, plus i’ve never seen a non binary YA book before so i think it’s a good starting point for the future.
If I only read the minimum (15!) that's still 15% of my usual reading but if I read all (40) that's... a lot lol
we'll see how it goes!
@@BookswithEmilyFox Oh yeah it sure is a daunting challenge :D
But I guess i'm just not up for it yet, i'm too stuck in my comfort zone.
Yay!!! I can’t wait to see what you think of Imaginary Friend! 🥰
Will my cat eat my eyeballs was so good! The illustrations that went along with it were just 👌👌👌
I love Caitlin Doughty's books! I bought Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?, and then listened to it on Scribd because I couldn't wait for it to come in. It was great.
Hi! I’m a patron because I love your channel. Please read The Wicked King!!!!
You have inspired me to do this challenge. :)
I am currently reading Normal People. It’s an easy read. You can finish the book in one seating
Question: how many times does your vote count in the goodreads awards? Because there are three rounds and if you vote for the same book that’s three vote for that a book.
My understanding is that each round starts the votes fresh. Votes from previous rounds dont carry over.
Will my cat eat my eyeballs is one of my top 3 fave books of the year! Caitlyn Doughty is so funny and the book is super interesting. I recommend her other two books if you haven’t ready them yet. :)
I'm really hoping I will enjoy it! I didn't know she had written other ones... I'll have to check them out if I like the first one!
I will read the books that are translated in my language and that is about 9 books.
You should read The Nickel Boys. It's sad but powerful
I wanted to read just the Fantasy category. However I already read 6, I’m not interested in 4 and from the other 10, most are part of a series...
It may make you feel better about the amount of votes vs. how many rated it if you think about how many people that have read it but didn't rate it. It isn't required on Goodreads to rate a book when you mark it as read, and I forget to rate books all the time lol. This may be the case with a lot of people that have read the books.
But ratings include all the one marked as "read" no?
Good question! I do that too because sometimes it's just hard to rate with only five stars...
When are you going to read Crime and Punishment?
You should read Maybe you should talk to someone in the non fiction category. That's the one I voted for and I adore that book.
The Huntress is great!
I'm interested in the Red Sister trilogy, The Priory of the Orange Tree and The Starless Sea, in fantasy and Children of Ruin, and This is how you lose the Time War in Sci-fi.
Please read or better yet listen to With the Fire On High. I promise you won't regret it!
