This is by far the best version of The Nutcracker. The dancers are superb, I just can't take my eyes off them. Amazingly graceful. Thank you for the upload.
Brings back soooooo many wonderful memories when he (Misha) debuted this in DC ......was scandalous as it showed a young adult version of the story. LOVED IT !!! (and still do) Thanks so much for putting this "out there" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had the opportunity to attend many live performances from the greatest companies of this haunting ballet, and I fully agree that this is the best version, even though I only watched it on TV in the late 70's. It is regular on PBS during the Holiday Season. Thank you for uploading!
I remeber this on channl 11 in Chicago in the late 1970's. For years I had only a VHS copy, then in 2003 I had a DVD. Kirkland is able to play a young girl and also a woman here. The ending is ABSOLUTE APOTHESIS. It reminds me of Beethoven's 9th ending. THE EFFECTS ARE SIMILAR.
There is SO MUCH joy and "K" in this production I cannot begin to cover it all. IT produces a KUNDALINI HIGH in me. ALL CREATION is there for ME when I witness this performance.. It is like the "RUSH of IDEAS" in a manic high in bipolar disorder. Every idea, feeling......all is there AT ONE TIME. It is GOD making LOVE to ME "K".
the ending is so beautiful. i've been captivated by it since i was a wee little gay lad of nine years old. i have to watch it over and over. thanks for posting!!!
I grew up with this movie and it brings back such memories watching it again. The newer versions just aren't the same. Thank you so much for uploading.
Wow, what an ispiration --coming from a young dancer like myself! Absolutely beautiful (and if I spelled absolutely wrong, then.. That would sort of rest my case about my age).
@Kamakounsolour The whole thing was a dream sent by her godfather, Drosselmeyer. That's why he turns up towards the end and begins separating her from the prince and the other characters - the dream is over and it's time for her to wake up.
I thought this was the greatest production of the ballet there ever was... but if I were to make any quibbles, it would the deleting of the Arabian dance. And... here, the Nutcracker Prince and Drosselmeyer's Nephew are not one and the same. In some versions, Clara and Drosselmeyer are related. I prefer it when they're not so there are no incestuous undertones and vibes. Kirkland dares to stand next to Baryshnikov Almighty Himself... and hold her own. Still... this is a classic for a reason.
Ovation channel has a "Battle of the Nutcrackers" but this version is omitted. I wonder why? This is the best version in my opinion. The Bolshoi does have a nice Nutcracker but nothing compares to this one.
bmrigs Because this wasn't the best Nutcracker. They removed like 4 of the better parts (Snow Pas De Deux, Sugar Plum Fairy Variation, Pas De Deux, and this does not count because it's not Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, Arabian Coffee)
What does it say about our society when this video has had fewer than 3000 views while a video of someone setting himself on fire can have 1,000,000 hits?
This is fun, but this: th-cam.com/video/83-ii3fzkEA/w-d-xo.html That's a Pas de deux, and a prfect Sugar Plum Fairy. Poor Gelsey- she was force to starvw herslf. Bjt she is a wonderful ballerina-and so easy tolift!

zetrone100 What are you talking about? Clara isn't the Sugar Plum Fairy..
Always brings me to tears...
Bellísimo
I completely agree with zetrone100. The most powerful version of ballet. No matter how many times I watch this video, I feel emotional shock.
I feel exactly the same. and leaves me in tears..

THE ULTIMATE CLASSIC.
I really, really like Gelsey and always have.
This is the grand standard by which all other performances of The Nutcracker should be judged.
iqofgenius I give this a 0 out of 5! The others at least a 3 :)
Graceful 🎀🙏
Could someone PLEASE resstore this masterpiece??????
Il existe en dvd et l'image est excellente.

@fanorama1 It says that those of us watching this one and not that one have impeccable taste.

@MyShalora Exactly! Merry Christmas MyShalora.

Clara is still adult when she returns !!!!
Yes, adult and knowing the happiness of love and the pain of loss.

fanorama1 Well, see, because this isn't the most amazing Nutcracker of all time.
I think when someone asks a question like this, they already know the answer. Sad isn't it.
Why does this video have a few seconds missing at about 1:37? (I can tell because i've got this on DVD.)
Sadie's 🎀🌏
@Picardy Really? What choreography would you consider interesting? >:(

Doesn't hold a candle to the Kirov. Kirkland is the best though.
the choreography was very blase and uninspiring considering what these two prime dancers can do when challenged and given something truly creative.
