Wow! I love that you added a comparison between Sega and Nintendo version at the end! This was a really great review! I am going to have to play this with my sister! :) I am so glad I found this channel
@@Cannotbetamed1 Pam, I'm new to your channel but I find it highly entertaining. I'll admit I clicked on one of your videos because you looked so comely in the thumbnail, but the content was interesting. I appreciate that you spotlight many games from when I was a kid that I never got to play. Thanks for what you do!
I bought the Genesis version for my ex-wife while we were dating as teenagers. We had a lot of fun playing it together. She kept it. Fair enough. She gave me Rock Band 2 for Wii and the guitar, drums, mic, and a pile of other games. It's all good.
Loved this game for the SNES. Never beat it. Always died on the last level. Our strategy was use our password from like level 26 or something and gather enough gear to destroy final boss. Never happened. Great 2 player game!
This is one of the better reviews I've seen of ZAMN, nice work :-) Someone made a so-called "ROM hack" of Zombies ate my neighbours called "Oh no! More Zombies ate my neighbours", with new levels. Also they added a "previous item" selection which is great. Like you said yourself, selecting items is a bit of a chore since you can only move forward in the inventory list. The reason why the sound in the SNES version is vastly better is because the SNES uses samples of instruments, while the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive is stuck with an FM synthesizer chip, just like the synthesizer keyboards from the 1980s. The SNES also supported up to 8 voices simultaneously, with optional reverb. An prime example of reverb used on the SNES can be found in Donkey Kong Country while playing in the cave levels. Also, next time you encounter snakeoids, shoot them with the bazooka from below. They should go down after three bazooka shots. Only their heads can take damage,
You did a great review. What makes this different from other reviews is that u HAVE A VERY FIRM UNDERSTANDING of the game. U did this based solely on your understanding and personal experience. Really amazing
I read that they originally wanted to have a battery saved option but were unable to because of funding. That really sticks. I love this game. It's one of my favorite gaming memories from childhood. But it's hard to go back to when you have to start all over to have the best weapon option. The password function is not ideal. If you could make it to a certain point, save. Come back to that point with the number of neighbors and weapons would be amazing.
I've loved this game ever since I first played it. It's a bit underrated, which is a shame, because it's a great game. I own both the Genesis and SNES versions, and I prefer the SNES version. Here's a fun story - I bought this game around 1994 or 1995, and I traded it off in 1997. Years later, I wanted it again and wanted to find a complete copy, but couldn't find one complete. One day in 2007, I found a complete copy at the shop I traded it to all those years ago. I opened the box and remarked at how well kept the game was, even having the plastic wrap around the cartridge. Well, this is something I did, and I determined that it was my original game that I traded to the shop all those years ago! What are the odds that I would get my own game back? It's never leaving my possession again!
I wish I could say the same thing about Earthbound that I traded in to a Microplay for about $12.50 back in 1997. I sold it with the players guide and box, mint condition. And I hate seeing someone's youtube channel with an Earthbound box as it reminds me how stupid I was. :-(
I always wondered if the sprites/design of the two playable characters were based on any particular films/stories, or were just sort of twists on iconic imagery of the time...although Zeke's old-school 3D glasses-while-not-watching-a-movie thing is far more '80s than mid-90's...reminds me of "Less Than Zero".
I totally agree, if been saying this game needs to have a online coop mode for a few decades now lol your comment made me smile and happy im not the only one who feels that way haha
You know, youtube needs more game reviewers like you... Great editing, soothing voice, outstanding commentary, couldn't ask for more. Keep up the good work!
ZEKE and his 3D glasses. One difference between Genesis and SNES (that I found out last week) I’d in the first Dr Tongue’s castle stage. In SNES, sone of the victims turn into werewolves but in not in the Genesis. But you nailed this one!
I also had no idea that this was a Lucas Arts title - that's really kind of cool. I have the Genesis version (although gotta admit after seeing the comparison I feel like I got the crappier port). Fell in love with the game at the Sega arcade in Epcot, was definitely the coolest title they had on display there.
Another terrific game I missed out on growing up. I remember seeing it constantly when I'd go to rent a game. I must have looked at that empty box a dozen times, but it always seemed to never grab me as much as whatever the latest Mega Man X game did. I see I missed out on a good time, and I am thankful I got to see what I missed, thanks to you, Pam.
This was one of the most popular games when I was in school, and because of that I had to replace 3 stolen copies of it. First copy the 'friend' claimed to have been burgled of ONLY my game, none of his games or his console, second copy I lent in return for Aero Acrobat only to have the friend I lent it to act like an asshole when I asked to swap back after a couple weeks and refused to return it until he finished it (I never got it back because we stopped being friends) and the third copy was stolen from my house by my little brothers friend when he came over. Was still worth buying each time, I probably played that game more than 95% of the games I've played since.
God this game is such a classic. Such a hard game too. This whole time I thought it was a Konami game too! I had not idea it was a Lucas Arts game :) I would love to see this game getting rebooted into a twin stick shooter I would love to revisit this series with modern controls.
Ikr? After all, this was when Konami made masterpieces. A reboot would be awesome! I think Cygnus Destroyer/LJN Defender mentioned that in a video too.
Ghoul Patrol is a sequel to ZAMN. Though not as good as ZAMN IMO. A reboot, by definition, would be the original game, but done with new graphics, sound, maybe even new levels, on a current generation platform.
While the screen size in the Genesis version is reduced, the visible playing field is not since the Megadrive version runs at a higher resolution. The downside is that sprites are "thinner" because of this.
The picture on the SNES version is stretched. Look again at the games side by side, you still see the same amount of play field. The SNES screen is 256 x 224. The Megadrive is 320 x 224. The gameplay window is actually exactly the same pixel size on the Megadrive as it is on the SNES : If you stand in the same spot on both versions, you should be able to see exactly the same areas of the screen.
This is almost as good as that one time when I asked you what kind of coffee you drink and you responded! But I'm guessing I am not the only person who requested you to review Zombie's Ate My Neighbors. As you said , it is a cult classic! But what shocks me is that you did not know that it was Lucasarts! That was the reason I posted my request to review this on your Maniac Mansion review! And speaking of Lucasarts and since I know you are a big fan of comp games , my next retro-request would be Sam & Max: Freelance Police!! One of the FUNNIEST games of all time!! Watching this video was great, btw, cuz you got WAY FARTHER in this game than I ever did! I am still stuck on the Mummy level!
That's such a great, campy soundtrack, I will likely listen to this review a couple of times today just to re-hear it. I have played this on my retropie, and I wouldn't have remembered which version I played until you mentioned the different placement of the map display. I played the SNES rom. Lots of fun, will probably pick it up again soon.
A nice thing was that all the items appearing in containers were randomized. Always made you wonder whether or not blasting that door to get to it was worth it.
Omg when I was a kid I could never find this game for sale but I bet my local video store was happy how much I rented it! This game is amazing!!!!! Me and my cousin would play this all weekend! If you never tried the doors that need a key can be blown open with the bazooka!
You are a lovely lady Pam. Amazing skills you have playing videogames. I love horror movies & horror survival videogames of the 1990's. Thank you for making this documentary. I wish they'd make a good horror movie based off this game!!!!
I love this game, and I appreciate the individual monsters having character-specific weaknesses, but I think they got a little carried away. This is the only game in which I've ever died while running away, cycling through my inventory to find just the right weapon. You can't pause and change weapons either.
I remember when my brother rented this back in the early 90s, we spent the whole weekend trying to beat it. The sequel "Ghoul Patrol" is really good too.
Good choice for a review, and surprised that you reviewed a SNES game. :) And I agree, it takes too long to cycle through the weapons. And I wish they gave you an option for your control settings as I always seem to press the wrong button at least once during a few levels and wasting a medi kit when I'm close to full health.
I never knew there was a Sega Genesis version of this game. I remember playing this on my friend's snes back in the day and to be honest I never really liked it too much. We would always get bored with it after playing for a few minutes & switch to something else. It's interesting that it devolved a bit of a modest cult status over the years.
If you love this game you have to check out 'Haunting: Starring polteguy' on the genesis, 'Monster in my pocket' and 'Attack of the killer tomatoes' both on the NES.
I love this game, I grew up with the Genesis version, I remember getting it at a Sam's Club for like $10 back in the 90s. Excellent game, my only complaint is that there are perhaps too many levels. Which, for all the things to complain about, that's basically nothing.
I had both zombies ate my neighbor games at different times I had it on genesis first then I got it for snes later on I play it almost every October along with other creepy fun games
I loved this game. I didn’t know anything about it when I was a kid until my friend gave it to me. I’ve even included some of the music into my own music.... following all laws of course haha
Cannot be Tamed Spoofs The Mummy (1932) It Came from Outer Space (1953) Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) Some enemies in the game, fishmen, look all like the merman monster in this movie The Blob (1958) Mars Needs Women (1968) (TV Movie) Night of the Living Dead (1968) Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) Dances with Wolves (1990) one level is called "Dances with Werewolves"😎
I used to watch Pam's videos all the time. I miss ya ! This is a game I saw advertised a lot, but didn't pick it up because it seemed too cheesy, but I was always curious about it.
That "Couch co op" is what couch locked me in a level 40 something where the computer went the opposite corner and got stuck & dumbass couldn't get out. I ended up shutting the game off and never did I play from the beginning again, just used codes
I love this game! I had it for Sega, so I'm used to the HUD on that version. With two player, it was nice having all of the info on the side. But now that I've seen the SNES setup I feel cheated of screen real estate! Regardless, this game is amazing. Thanks for covering it!
I remember when I was a kid my mother got me a Super Nintendo for Christmas man I love that console Super Mario World Beavis and Butt-head game and of course Zombies Ate My Neighbors game every time I beating a level it gives me code to the higher stages my mother got me a notebook so I can write down the codes so I can have them with me boy I miss playing that game
I always loved this game. I was never good enough to beat it though. I do remember someone doing a Doom mod for this one that looked pretty fun. ProTip: Wear headphones for this review. She does this neat trick with the audio that you can only pick up on if you are wearing them.
@@Cannotbetamed1 It happens right around the time you mention the differences in audio between the different versions of the game. I would not have noticed it if I was not wearing headphones at the time. You did not plan that?
This game is so hard. I definitely need help passing it. I got it on the Nintendo Switch. Maybe one day I will be able to pass it. The hardest level is the first spider boss battle on level 36.
It's funny, I had just participated in a challenge for this game days before your review came out. How many victims can you save on one credit? I saved 90. I did not win. This game is tough. I've never been able to beat it. I also dislike going through the inventory. I almost always pass the weapon I'm looking for. I'm also not a fan of the co-op play. If it were split-screen I'd be all for it, but too often I found either me or my friend getting trapped when wanting to explore in opposite directions. Were you able to figure out which weapon works best against the evil dolls? I hate those guys. This was a great review. I liked the side-by-sides of the SNES and Genesis versions. I had the Genesis version a while ago, but sold it in favor of the SNES one, but now kinda wish I still had it.
I didn't keep track of how many I could save on one credit. I found the pop cans worked best on the evil dolls, they cover a pretty big area which helps handle how fast those things move.
Cannot be Tamed I was actually naming the challenge I participated in, but after re-reading my comment it looks like I was asking you how many people YOU saved on one credit. Ha ha, no one in their right mind would keep track of something like that on a casual play. Soda cans--that's right. Thanks jogging my memory.
Late to the party here, but had to see this review. This is actually one of my favorite zombie games! Had the eshop version of the SNES one, and the actual cart on the Genesis, and Yea, the SNES is a bit better. Great comparison and video overall. Hopefully others will check this out

Cool choice for a review of a game which I own and still love.
I remember seeing this in GamePro magazine, there was a bit of hype around this game
Zombie ate my Neighborhood is much better than this famous title of Resident Evil
While the screen size in the Genesis version is reduced, the visible playing field is not since the Megadrive version runs at a higher resolution. The downside is that sprites are "thinner" because of this.

Classic SNES game 🙃
I bought ZAMN along with goul patrol on my wii vc prior to learning about PC emulators. It's one of those games I missed out on my childhood.
The chainsaw hedge maze gets me every time! The desperate and panicked music doesn’t help since I tend to get in a hurry and end up cornered!

I did that a ton. Using an item when I meant to fire a weapon, or standing around trying to switch to the right weapon while zombies ate me.
One of my faves. Needs a reboot
This was my childhood good stuff!

I didn't realize Lucas Arts developed it either, but yeah, you're right. It makes a TON of sense.
Right? I didn't even know they made console games.

Does this game have any level names that parody Star Wars?
Not that I can recall
Cannot be Tamed Spoofs
The Mummy (1932)
It Came from Outer Space (1953)
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Some enemies in the game, fishmen, look all like the merman monster in this movie
The Blob (1958)
Mars Needs Women (1968) (TV Movie)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
Dances with Wolves (1990)
one level is called "Dances with Werewolves"😎
Who made the dog bark at the beginning and who made the woman scream? Sometimes I just pressed both buttons and see which happened.
An innovative and twisted plot point for this game in 1993; Zombies Ate My Neighbors deserves to be a film from LucasFilm, Ltd.
Perhaps a Pixar movie.
I love this game, never played it on Genesis though. Neat feature.
Cool video, I loved this game as a kid. Think I'll have to go and give it another go now

That's awesome. I loved writing down game codes.
I always loved this game. I was never good enough to beat it though. I do remember someone doing a Doom mod for this one that looked pretty fun. ProTip: Wear headphones for this review. She does this neat trick with the audio that you can only pick up on if you are wearing them.
I do an audio trick in the video?
@@Cannotbetamed1 It happens right around the time you mention the differences in audio between the different versions of the game. I would not have noticed it if I was not wearing headphones at the time. You did not plan that?
OMG, am I the only one who's never heard of this game before? Nice review, Pam. You're cool.
Thanks! The game seems more popular than I expected.
Okay. Why had I never heard of this game before?
I finally completed it years ago on Sega Genesis. Hard game.
Found a new fave channel. Thanks beautiful
Welcome to the channel
I remember going to blockbuster to rent this game every weekend
I have the Genny version. Need to get the snes version sometime.
Lucasarts made so many great original, imaginitive games back then.
LucasArts was so good, their games were so full of humor
One of my favorite games on SNES and Genesis. :)
Yay!
Never played this game. I do plan on trying it out though. Seems really interesting.
Classic game! Which editing software do you use to put together your videos? I use AVID but sometimes I'll use Final Cut Pro X.
I use Vegas Movie Studio.
Cannot be Tamed Very nice! I'll have to check it out sometime.
Awesome review and yeah those damn worms always kicked my ass!
Thanks!
Thanks for the advice!!!
I just played it for the first time. It's so good!!
This game is so hard. I definitely need help passing it. I got it on the Nintendo Switch. Maybe one day I will be able to pass it. The hardest level is the first spider boss battle on level 36.
This was a fantastic game! Great review!
This looks so fun! I'm gonna have to check it out with the hubby.
Did you ever play polterguy? It's a different style of gameplay but hilarious.
I just heard of Polterguy a few days ago.
whirlwindraccoon such a fun game! I love the haunting :-)
So beautifu, so funny .Australia does not have beautiful gamer chicks.
One of the most rented games of my childhood, next to Secret of mana!
Great Review pam, i haven't played zombies on snes , only on genesis
Thank you!
Loved this game. Great video
they need to remake this game! new consoles with vr!
Yay, Pam likes my favorite game too!
Woo!
Perfect review!
Thank you
One of the best games ever. Those toy clowns used to get on my dayum nerves, though. Lolol.
The axe-wielding baby things were the thing that most got on my nerves.
I've only casually played this game in the past but I had fun at the time. I almost thought this was an old video for a Halloween special haha.
I don't tend to choose my games based on the time of year.
Late to the party here, but had to see this review. This is actually one of my favorite zombie games! Had the eshop version of the SNES one, and the actual cart on the Genesis, and Yea, the SNES is a bit better. Great comparison and video overall. Hopefully others will check this out
Thanks! There are so many zombie games and I love a lot of them
