Silver machine is a very British shorthand for a motorcycle. See 1960’s cafe racers.

The Umbrella Academy was written by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance and you're right! They're most famous for Welcome To The Black Parade. Love the inclusion of The Stranglers, my dad played Golden Brown and some of their other hits a lot when I was growing up, the introduction always stuck out to me with the oddness of the time signatures. I was surprised to not see Bad Manners when I saw "ska" in the description, there's no shortage of weird hits with them.

Robert Calvert was the song writer, I wouldn't say this song represented what the band and Calvert were. You have to listen to the albums for that. Also understand that Calvert was a writer / poet, a pretty complex thinking man. It wasn't until after the era of Lemmy and Nik Turner in Hawkwind, that Calvert's genius really came into its own, 1976 onwards. A set of albums up to 1979 were basically Robert Calvert and Dave Brooks work, with no influences from the previous line up's. Hawkwind is an interesting story for any band, you need to watch the BBC documentary and some of the Lemmy film to get a small picture of why they became so important in British music.

It's only weird to the untrained ear.

was going to turn off until you put on Golden Brown - just fantastic! Stranglers album Rattus Norvegicus (1977) is really quite good, but W"alk on by" cover I think is brilliant and was my theme song during covid! Never, been a madness fan know their songs because as you say it's played all the time in Britain. Mika's Grace Kelly, glad I had moved away from the UK so didn't have to be subjected to this. Brittish music shouldn't be soft, sweet and fluffy but that's just me.
    Another great episode Jacob.

My Chemical Romance's later albums are legit bangers, super political, telling stories, love them lmao

People like the music of their era and the style of music they like. Silver Machine was far from the best Hawkwind song but it was a milllion times better than the other three you featured. Just my late 60s, early 70s hard rock opinion.😁

Hmm, I'll have to disagree ;) probably my least favourite of the three songs haha

@@oeokosko No I wasn't. It's not 'my era'. Genuinely not sure how that has anything to do with it

Interesting topic. However, I was really distracted by the giant microphone in front of Rachel's face. It made you look like you had a beard. Please look before you broadcast. Thanks for the info otherwise.
