You know, all the safety nazis will pitch a fit at the sight of someone drinking and paddling. Absolute bullshit. If you've got a nice strong buzz going (no, not shit faced, that's bad juju), it can actually be beneficial. The shock of falling in cold water is lessened, as is the chance that shock will cause a swimmer to suddenly take a deep breath as a reaction to the bracing effect that the cold produces. It also dulls the panic that can hit someone who just got washed into a hole, ironically keeping their judgement clearer. It also lowers anxiety. It's vaguely analogous to the reason that the guy driving drunk that caused a head on collision often survives, but those in the other car often don't.The drunk guy isn't as tense and keyed up right before impact, A bone is much more likely to break when it's already under lots of muscle tension, as opposed to someone who's "relaxed". I realize that a horrible comparison to make, but it's a fact. And, once again, I'm not talking about being stumbling drunk. Just enough to be in the zone. Besides, paddling with tightwads is never fun.
