    Thunder Force III was a blast; EGM's coverage was great hype and it delivered. Forgotten Worlds: Nice 2-player action once you get the controls, and good aesthetic.

      Also absolutely take a look at Battle Mania Daiginjou. It's a japan exlusive sequel to trouble shooter and one of the best games on the system. Also the soundtrack is one of the best ever.

    Gleylancer is freaking awesome. Didn't have it growing up but today it's one of my favorites for shootem' ups. My favorite always was Air Busters though since I grew up with it. Air busters came with that slick leather fingerless glove in box to make you feel like one badass nerd lol

    I remember having a good time with Thunder Force 3, Chelnov (or Atomic Runner), Phelios, Bio Hazard Battle, and the cheesy Forgotten Worlds. It's difficult to pick a favorite one with such a huge library on the Genesis.

    I loved MUSHA, and foolishly sold it before it skyrocketed in price. I love the music, especially the track "For the love of..." I liked the effects in MUSHA, like the tiles falling from the sky to the river below. My other favorite shooter was Lightning Force aka Thunder Force 4. I'd like to see a Genesis run and gun series as well.

    Good Presentation, with abundant enough explanation on why the certain shooter, has depth and re-play value. Like the way mostly that you use, to justify the market price. Good presenter, better educational source guy!!!

    IMO, MUSHA has pretty amazing graphics and sound for an early Genesis game. Nice chunky sprites, great looking explosions, very good use of color, simulated scaling & rotation effects, as well as awesome vertical line scrolling effects, like in that level where you fly over a chasm. Compared to Thunder Force II, it looks like it's from a different console gen. Hell, I can't think of any other Genesis vertical scrolling shmup that looks better. The soundtrack is one of my favorite early Genesis ones too. Very dynamic driving techno score with some guitar mixed in and most of the tunes have good hooks. First level track is probably my favorite. Compile knew exactly what kind of music to go for with that Yamaha FM chip.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Musha is underrated in the technical department. SO MUCH going on: lot of sprites + lot of individual enemy AI + great sense of depth via dual plane/column scrollings + lot of neat visual FX (pre-rendered scaling, transparent shadow, etc.)... Also nice anime-like introduction that was uncommon if not unseen at the time and the whole game runs in proper resolution of 320x224 pixels. All of this makes Musha stands out above most if not all shooters on competiting hardwares and the fact that it was a rather early release (December 1990) and that it relies solely on a tiny 4 meg cartridge makes it all the more impressive!
      But to its defense (and because I love it too) Thunder Force II MD was released much earlier (1 year and a half earlier) so for its time, it delivered.

    I tend to agree about Musha Aleste. Some cool traditional-meets-mecha designs, but it never blew me away. Eliminate Down and Gleylancer knocked my socks off.

  • @matthewheupel8960
    @matthewheupel8960 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me, it's absolutely MUSHA. It's true that graphically it's not that impressive, but that music is fantastic and the game play defines a great shooter for me. Excellent pacing and an excellent power up system. Steel Empire is another one of my favorites. Game play is competent and fun, and the game is just dripping with an uncommon style.

  • @SnakeHiggins

    No doubt Vapor Trail is my favorite genesis shmup, but Elemental Master and Trouble Shooter are up there too. Sagaia is an amazing port of Darius 2, Phelios is a cool Ancient Greece inspired one, Bio Hazard Battle is insanely strange one but its pretty awesome, and for some reason, even though I acknowledge it's a weird choice, I enjoy the hell out of Task Force Harrier.

    I was lucky enough to find damn near all of the Genesis shooters back in the days when I could find games for 2-5 bucks at any pawn shop, thrift store, or flea market I walked into. In my unpopular opinion, Thunder Force II is the best. The side-scrolling stages are masterpieces. I don't mind the overhead stages -- I think it improves the experience to get a break in the action doing the easy overhead levels before going back to the much tougher side scrolling mode. Thunder Force III has the best graphics and sound of the series, but it's so easy. Lightening Force is another masterpiece. Tecnosoft released 6 games on the Genesis, and they range from excellent to masterpiece. Beyond the TF series, Elemental Master and Gaiares were my faves.

    I declare myself a big fan of steel empire. The gameplay was correct, not the best, but way above average. The upgrading of the weapons was standart. But for me the catch was the atmosphere and steampunk vibe. Those bosses were an absolute feast for the eyes.

    I had a genesis schmup when I was a kid that I'm trying to remember the name of. From what I can remember I think it looked alot like After Burner (from Terminator 2) but one thing I remember without a doubt is there was a certain point of the game (it might have been when entering your initials) where the audio would keep repeating "Roger!" Whenever you pressed a certain button. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

    While not the best in the series, my lord, Thunder Force II is a legendary shooter in its own right and it'll always have a special place in my heart (right next to Blazing Lazers and R-Type)...pew pew pew pew.
    P.S. While I do love me some MUSHA, all the praise that it gets, should by rights, go straight to Gaiares.

  • @chainedlupine

    Man, no Troubleshooter? Thunderforce 3 or 4 (aka "Lightening Force" in the US, ugh)? Aero Buster? Nothing from Toaplan (Zero Wing, Truxton, Hellfire)? Sol-Deace/Feace? Check this games out, honestly, you might like them!

    Back in 1989 Thunder Force II was the game that convinced me to buy a Genesis instead of TG16.. And it ´s still one of my favorite Genesis games.
    Heck, I´m still thinking on paying the full Price for Eliminate down. I have ROBO ALESTE on Sega CD not MUSHA and the game is very good, if MUSHA is similar then the game is not worth the 200 bucks Price....
    The only thing I see wrong on Steel empire is the slow down that appears here and there, graphics are nice and interesting but yes they do not have parallax.
    Wings of Wor........ another shoot em up I really want.. u_u
    Gley Lancer........yet another expensive game that looks awesome.... Phantasy Zone does not appeal to me, but I will follow your recomendation.
    GAIARES... I was in love with it since the first time I saw the pictures on Electronic Gaming Monthly, I even have the magazine Die Hard Game Fan with the review for the game.. I was able to finish the game one time and only one ha ha ha.. It´s haaard.
    RAIDEN TRAD... tsss I have the game new and sealed since 1999.... Whip Rush is a good game.
    And Finally my favorite Shoot em ups on Genesis are.
    Thunder Force II
    Gaiares
    Thunder Force III.
    Forgotten Worlds (Yes, for me FW is a shmup).
    Thunder Force IV.
    PHELIOS.
    Bio Hazard Battle.
    Steel Empire.

    I agree with you. There are _many_ shooters on the Genesis that I'd rather play over MUSHA. I don't really understand why the games is held in such high regard by some.

    • @letsgonow5641
      @letsgonow5641 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Played it for the first time a few days ago. Although i was aware of that game back when it came out. I admit there is some nice aspects of the game. Especially for an earlier title. However, i felt a disconnect with it thats hard to put into words. Also some spotty hit detection. I think this was Compile first game an as far as a technical point it showed what they were capable of. Its just to me i just didnt hit a chord for me. My fav schump till this day is Blazing Lazers..Thats come from a hardcore Sega Fan..
