“Well, neither do you your highness.”

“Let’s just say that your father isn’t the only king with spies.”
“I… guess that makes sense. As a king it *is* true you have enough power to get into the palace.”
(Nods)
(Sighs) “I’m confused why would you plant spies to watch over me and propose an engagement? What do you want?”
“There’s something I want to offer you.”
“A deal? Why would you want to do that?”
“We both have something the other wants.”
“Really, what do you think I want?”
“Freedom.”
(Sigh) “I guess you weren’t bluffing about the spies. Yes, I wish for freedom. But what do you want from me?”
“The king’s weakness.”
“So… you want to take my father down and, in exchange for information, you’ll grant me freedom? It that it?”
(Silently nods)
“Why don’t you just get that information from your spies?”
“You know the king better than a thousand informants ever could.”
“True, I’ve watched him for a long time but… why do you think I’ll help you over my father?”
(Said like it’s the most natural thing in the world) “You hate him, don’t you?”
(Nervous laugh) “And I thought I’d hidden it pretty well. Just how long have you had spies watch me.”
“About a year.”
“Really? You must have been thinking about this for a long time then. Why do you want to take down my father so much?”
(Leans in and whispers, despite knowing there’s nobody around) “So I can get back at the bastard who forced me to watch as my parents were killed.”
(Somehow maintains a neutral expression) “Oh, that makes sense. I would be surprised he didn’t recognize you when you asked for my hand but… he doesn’t remember his victims. That’s just how cruel he is.”
“Does he trust you?”
(Said like she was reciting a letter) “Well, for first, I don’t believe he trusts anyone but… I don’t think he believes me capable of betraying him. Even when he killed my mother he didn’t spare me a glance. (Fist tighten) I’ve always been considered nothing by him.”
“But that’s changing, isn’t it?”
“That’s right. In this past month he’s called upon me more often. I brew him tea, he talks, but I haven’t the faintest clue why. My past self would think he’s making amends but his eyes still look at me the same.”
“…And eyes speak with more honesty than a thousand smiles.”

“…and then what?”
“Didn’t I tell you? I’m offering you the freedom to do whatever you want.”
“Really?” (Thinks for a second) “…what if I choose to remain married to you?”
(Gives a warm smile) “That’s certainly on the table.”
“Huh, you’re serious about this.”
(Joking) “Did your father rip ‘freedom’ out of all your dictionaries?”
“Well, you promised me freedom but… you could easily divorce me when I arrived at your kingdom.”
“…”
“While I hate my life here I don’t want to be in a foreign land with nothing to my name?”
(Sigh) “How can I convince you of my intentions?”
“You speak elaborately but I need proof.”
(Pulls out a scroll and thinks “I hate these things but it seems I don’t have another choice…”) “Does this work?”
“A magic contract!?”
(Hands it to her without a word)
