When I tried using watercolor (generally Winsor and Newton paints) as the underpainting, the top layers of soft pastel didn't disturb the underpainting pigments. When I used soft pastel with water for underpainting, top layers of soft pastel picked up particles of the underpainting. I remedied that by using a fixative layer after a pastel underpainting. An example of this, sometimes I to paint the sky close to the edge of the horizon with a yellow cast and lay a blue over it. When I did that with a soft pastel underpainting, I got green that I didn't really want. I wanted blue with little flecks of yellow. Just passing this along.
If you look more into RM's work, he uses oil paints sometimes as an underpainting in a thinned wash. I think I've seen him also use turpertine with a soft pastel underpainting too. I didn't hear if for underpainting with pastels it's more successful if you use pure colors - like not diluted with black or white pigments.
