    Adolf Reichel (1816-1896) was a Swiss composer, pianist and conductor. Born in Turznice (Poland), he was active in Berlin, Meiningen, Paris, Dresden and Bern. He was a close friend of the Russian anarchist and revolutionary Mikhail Bakunin. Adolf was the progenitor of a dynasty of musicians that has continued to this day. It includes violinists Henri Ern and Moritz, Ernst, Karl, Suzanne, Anton and Regina Reichel, cellist Alexander Reichel, organist and conductor Helmuth Reichel, singer and actress Helen Vita, pianist Andreas Reichel, guitarist, singer and tangoist Mathis Reichel, flautist Jean-Luc Reichel (several of whom also composed), as well as trumpeter Giuliano Sommerhalder and oboist Simon Sommerhalder.
    The present symphony was composed and first performed in Bern, Switzerland, in 1869 and first performed in 1870 in the same city. It has no opus number.
