Ah, some more Voigtlander love. Thanks for portraying these as lenses that might actually be a rational choice for people and not exclusively the object of a weird fanperson cult of oddballs who just need to be different. Usually when people carry on like they do about these lenses there's at least _something_ to it, and being a huge vintage manual lens for video person I tried them and loved them. You've listed their strengths and weaknesses so no need to repeat them but for me the ultimate advantage is-again, for me-a certain old-world filmic quality they bring to everything. Sure, I've got the Leica-designed Lumix lenses when the client expects that painful sharpness, you know, where portraits look like a cardboard cutout with a lava-lamp background, but when more character is appropriate I reach for these. They remind me a bit of the manual lenses Nikon still manufactures because they're that well designed and remain popular. That's what I tend to use for stills, those or the more celebrated vintage ones, and it's nice to have that same quality in native lenses over on the MFT side.
I think what is lost in the conversation of lenses like Voigtlander and Leica manual lens is the "look" it gives instead of just talking about the fastest F-Stops/Apertures or how it's not sharp until you stop it down or "it has character". I have a Sony FF camera and have used G Master lenses before and while it is fun to pixel peep and looking at a 61 megapixel picture in details......that's about where the fun ends there. Those G Master lens do not speak to me, and they lack that "image" or "look" that I am looking for. Furthermore, people don't want to see pics of themselves showing every single imperfection on their faces or bodies or do they want super sharp images....they just want a pleasing photo to look at....to capture the moment. So what do people do?.....they put all these filters on the end of their lenses to create a softer image, they turn down sharpness in in-camera settings.......they're doing all these things to present a more pleasing image..........so then ask yourself this: Then why are you paying over $1300 plus to buy a G Master lens just to make it unsharp???? Does that make any sense at all????? IMHO, I think the majority of people who are doing photography/videography today (and they're mainly alot younger) have lost their way or they don't even know what a "pleasing image" should be. Why do you think FujiFilm is so popular with their "Film Simulations".....people are trying to replicate those images from the past film camera days....you know, that "Film Look". These Voigtlander and Leica lenses provides that "look" with no filters or in-camera adjustments; but what's even better, is "how" they present these images as well. The majority of people will never buy these lenses because they don't have autofocus, they're not clinically sharp, and the prices are just "too high" for what they are. I've heard them referenced so many times as "character lenses".....which is total BS IMHO.....they're giving you the look you want and desire and have NOTHING to do with "character".
I love the Nokton and I work daily with the 10.5 and 25mm! In my opinion the best option for film look in the m43 universe! Just wonderful! The clickless aperture control and smooth focus ring are a dream! Right now I’m dreaming with the 29mm f0.8!
I thought about buying those but they weren't weather sealed so I ended up getting the 17mm and 45mm Olympus Pro f/1.2. I wish the voigtlanders were weather sealed.
it would be interesting to know what setup you used to shoot this talking heads with. Did you use any of the lenses you're reviewing? The reason I ask is because I see a lot of videos commending certain MFT lenses only to then discover that they shot the video on an R5, FX30 or Sony Alpha .... The end result is that people's view of the subject under review is skewed by the quality of the presentation ... which might have nothing to do with what's being reviewed...
Hey, I saw the black and white footage you included in this video, have you considered doing a youtube video on how to shoot black and white on a GH series camera (or any modern digital camera for that matter?) I woul love to hear how you go about it, whether you de-colourise in post, any useful tips etc.
I would be interested in doing that, but I wonder how well it would do with the TH-cam algorithms. A lot of times the videos I want to make the most perform the worst but then again, that’s never stopped me before!
@@RhettThompsonFilm just a quick question if you don't mind, would you suggest recording B+W video in camera, using something like the Monochrome D setting, or in colour and then correcting it all after? I think Monochrome D looks amazing but obviously has less flexibility in post.
Voightlander lens are awesome to use. The sharpness and look is just amazing, just the CA and color shift are the only two things that I don't like or maybe the weather sealing also, haha. Hmmm thats a tough one. I use the SLR magic VND which has a review on my channel. It has two issues though, 1. Sometimes it isnt dark enough for bright sunny days and 2. There isnt an X pattern but at the widest angles there can be some uncontrolled polarization that could look weird. If you are often shooting in direct sunny light Id say Freewell 6-9 stop VND and for everything else the SLR magic I think 2-5 stop would work well.
Great video 👍🏻 I’m from Germany and want to start with wedding videography and thinking about picking them up (17,5mm 25mm and 42,5mm) with a gh5 Mark ii would you recommend these for wedding videography or would be the tokina 11-16mm and canon 24-70mm with speedbooster a better setup?
See now I’m very torn. On one hand and I really like native lenses. On the other for wedding videography you really can’t beat the versatility and convenience of a zoom lens. Either way for weddings I feel like you need one telephoto lens for the ceremony and at least two cameras. But given those two options I guess I would say the two zooms and speed booster.
What's the point of buying a F.95 that's not usable at F.95 due to its softness? as much as I love MFT Im starting to think that I will have to buy full frame camera in order to satisfy my shallow DoF thirst.
I wouldn’t describe the softness as unusable. It’s definitely unusable for a lot of things at the minimum focus distance but most of these lenses are optimized for the middle length like interviews and portraits. Obviously they are a lot better at 1.2 or 1.4 but a lot of people really hate that clinical sharpness lenses tend to have these days and these combine some of the benefits of modern optics and the feel of something a little bit more retro. It’s obviously not right for everybody though so the Olympus 1.2 pro lenses might be better for you and seem pretty amazing for what they can give you even on a crop sensor.
I've sold all of these due to softness. Actually, I was angry about them - they are so nice cosmetically and joy to use, BUT they fool you twice. First when pay for wide aperture and you can't use it because of lack of resolution. And second time with size and weight. They are heavy, so heavy that you only may forgive this for brightness and sharpness, which they don't have. Most ugly is that 10.5mm 0,95, it's a joke really, weights a ton and only acceptable at 4.0. There is a comparison on TH-cam between Voigt 10.5 VS Oly 12 VS Laowa 10mm. How better the Laowa is even wide open! And then check the weight... Pany Leica 15 or 25mm is super sharp wide open in comparison with Voigts. But if you need manual lens with wide aperture? Get Laowa ;)

Potentially hit the softness and other effects wide open might negatively effect you depending on your subject but the light gathering is crazy
