How to use DOG GROOMING CLIPPER BLADES and COMB ATTACHMENTS on a LARGE DOODLE

  • IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?!? DOG grooming clipper blades and comb attachments-what is the difference? How to properly use them? How to groom your dog like a professional! I put a demo together for you to demonstrate using snap on combs. I’ll be trimming a large Labradoodle named Diesel. How to use DOG GROOMING CLIPPER BLADES and COMB ATTACHMENTS on a LARGE DOODLE!
I want to make sure you understand you cannot use snap on combs to give your dog a hair cut if you have not properly prepared your dogs coat for trimming. This demo will show you exactly how to do that my friends!
Clipper comb attachments cannot stand up to clipper blades when it comes to trimming dog breeds with thicker coats such as Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, Doodles and a lot of our favorite mixed breed dogs.
If your dog has a matted coat or an abundance of dead coat your will find using snap on comb attachments is not an option. They will not get through the coat and will snag and get caught in the tangles. Which leaves you only two options…To use a clipper blade that is short enough to get between the skin and the mats or De-mat your dogs coat prior to attempting to clip it.
De-matting is not something most novice groomers are capable of achieving successfully…. as this method takes years of practice and know how to safely accomplish a perfectly prepared coat for clipping.
It is not easy to groom your dogs hair without proper training. In fact, most people don’t even have the proper tools, let alone understanding how to use them correctly. Any tools you can use to make it easier to give your dog a good looking hair cut is something of value to you and your pet.
The only downside to grooming with snap on combs, is that they may not leave the coat as long as you’d like it to be. The largest size guard combs in the wahl set is a 1 inch. IF you desire longer length of coat than that, you will have to learn to freehand cut…which is hand scissor trimming.
The clipping technique is the same when using a blade or a guard comb. Blades leave a smoother finish where guard combs leave a little texture to the hair. In this video, we start with dog grooming for beginners.

Great information, however it probably would've been more informative if instead of only telling watchers what the number of the comb is, e.g. #2 comb, that you also inform the watcher as to what the length the comb is supposed to cut which in this case is 3/8 inch.
Most people cannot relate to #2 in their minds and have no perspective what that means. If you say the comb, or yields approximately 3/8 inch length then everyone (at least here in the U.S and England) can relate to that.
I now have a set of the same combs and so when you say a '#2 comb' I can relate whereas when I watched this video a couple days ago I didn't have a clue because Amazon had not yet delivered my combs yet.😀

I found 30 gave a better finish. However, I spoke to my supplier Christie last year about the problems I was having with Wahl snap-on combs breaking, and found out that 30 blades can make the comb too loose. She suggested a 15 blade as the best combination between finish and fit. I've gone back to a 10 and not broken any more combs...yet. 😬

Hi, I have a labradoodle too! His coat lays flat, like a Labrador, rather than fluffy like a poodle. Would I use the clip on guides like you have on this dog or would I need to buy a longer clipping blade and use that? I have found when clipping him with a clip on guide comb that it misses the hair due to it laying so flat whereas when I clip my other dog who has a curly coat it works fine.Thank you

Wish I would have done a pre-trim so that I could have gotten him fully dry with the dryer. Would you suggest keeping him close cut year round? Amy, I have a black miniature poodle, would it be ok to groom Toby's entire body with the Kenchii clippers or are they just for the finish work like between toes and pads, etc. I've thought about purchasing a set and attempting it bcoz watching you groom for a while now, I believe I could do it and if I mess him up, that's fine too, it'll just grow back, lol 😆. I'm confused now. In another video, I thought you said the higher the # the shorter the cut. The problem I seem to have is, I have an Andis clipper. I am a beginner I trim my morkie in between cuts. I don't want him too short on his body. I put a #3 comb on ,but he's still looking uneven even though I bathe him first. Should I go against the growth? Other than that he comes out good.

Hi, I bought a 30 blade that is an Andis. I have the Andis Clipper also. I cannot get the 30 blade on my Clipper. Can you show how to get the blade on the Clipper. I have no problems with other blades. I have tried everything! Thank your , Carol

I have a Wahl KM2 clipper but my number 2 comb is a purple colour my blue one is a number 3. However my number 2 comb when I clip it on is making a terrible noise? & the clipper blades are moving out of alignment when switched on. It only does it with this comb? Could it be bent? I have a Labradoodle & a Groodle which I believe you call a goldendoodle in the US I'm in Australia maybe that's why my combs are different colours to yours. Should I just buy a new number 2 comb? Also I'm thinking of purchasing a 3F blade. Is this a good choice? Thankyou

Are you using it over a number 10 blade? Sometimes the teeth on the attachment combs become bent if they’re dropped and you have to gently bend them back into place. They may be hitting against the clipper blade when the blade is moving or your clipper blade is out of alignment.

You definitely need a clipper made for a dogs skin and coat. This one is nice with the optional 7,5, and 4 blades:)

I'm in Canada, and a groomer recently told me that shorter fur on a drop coat dog is actually less cold for them than if they had their fur long. Is this true? 🤔 I've not had a dog before and sources online arent helpful. Online just says things like you should never bring a maltese outside when it's very cold anyway.

As a groomer myself, we do get horribly dry skin with bathing so much and using soap. We get what’s called “bather’s rash”, but after a while your skin gets used to it. Myself and my team like to use O’keefs working hands balm. Life saver. What’s worse is when you get hair splinters lol.

Thank you for the blade/ clip guard demo!!
I’ve been having a really hard time the last couple of times I I’ve groomed my standard poodles.
For example- tonight paid for professional bath conditioner n blow out so I could do the rest at home.
Wahl sent me new blades since last time I groomed them I had the same problem. The blade & guard worked great first round then I wanted to go a bit shorter so got a dif. Clip guard- made it half way through and then it started pulling the hair vs cutting it.
It was a brand new blade- in fact I used two fresh out of the packaging new blades, cleaned out, oiled and it just wouldn’t cut anymore and felt like it was pulling it not cutting.
Of course it was after hours! Resorted to finishing her off with scissors and left the other one for tomorrow- how???? I don’t know.
    Please help. 😢🫠🙃😟😔😣🤯🤯
Ps I am very grateful for you & your videos! I’ve learned a lot from you and enjoy doing a pretty great job on my pups even though I’m not a pro.
