I lean toward perfection and took on the challenge. I bought the tube because of all the comments indicating that the tub when mixed all the popcorn pieces disappeared. My repairs were small but many and around the edges of the ceiling. I used a small stiff paint brush and applied with the tip of the brush and for some strange reason using the flat part to tap to get the popcorn look worked perfectly. Let dry for a day or so and used flat white ceiling paint. Great results. Anyone else use the tube to find that mixing made the popcorn pieces disappear.
I am total with AlchemyForge on this one, this is a God given savior video right here. I've wondered if there was some way to make a popcorn repair without renting an expensive hopper or trying to use my tank with a smaller hopper and thin mud. This is literally getting ordered in a few minutes. i love it. Thank you a ish ton for this video! Bro, literally the patch don't exist! We see it because of course we all watched and you worked it but if you showed the house, it will be unseen especially if you through some satin/matte finish to the ceiling.
I used the same stuff and the same technique. Works great. If there are big color variations what works for me is a can of spray Kilz. Lightly sprayed over the area it blended and feathered the white color nicely.
I’m not going to even try the spray can popcorn I’ve already bought after seeing this. I’ve done it in the past several times with pretty good results but what a mess. This definitely looks like a much more controlled approach. Thank you.
Yeah it is messy I am in maintenance and I use the same stuff he does to fix the ceilings the spray cans sometimes don't even work right or you have half a can left doesn't even matter what brand they all have in my opinion 50/50 chancebof working properly and they are kinda pricey. His method is what indo for the most part unless I'm doing a scrape and am redoing the whole ceiling then I use the sprayer the actual sprayer I think it's a Dewalt texture sprayer but that is messy most of the job is prep. I hate when the tenants live there they almost never do anything to help me do my job amd complain it takes so long. Like bra help me amd I'll be in and out lol. Have a good day.
Several rounds of preventative plumbing work left our basement ceiling looking like swiss cheese. This looks like the low mess, low stress method I've been searching for.
I was going to use a putty knife but the paint brush worked perfect...also I am glad i used the tub instead of the spray...thanks for this video it was a huge help
I had some areas around my Air Conditioner that got wet when it leaked. Some areas were bare down to the dry wall. My first coat came out too thin because I literally tried to paint it on, but I went back an hour later and dabbed on a thicker coat and went back and broke it up by pushing the brush upward into it and spreading it a little bit. The next day it had dried just about the same color as the non damaged area and looks pretty good. There are still some stained areas so I plan to spray some Kilz on next weekend, but I am happy with the texture and color of this product
It's a very helpful video. I had a small water stain above the kitchen ceiling fan. This method helped make it much easier to repair and kept costs low.
Nice video and very helpful. Once the popcorn is replaced, how do you match the ceiling paint? Especially if it is several years old.I have been able to repair popcorn, but the color never matches.
Thanks for this video. I bought this same stuff and then found this video. My ceiling came out pretty good. It looks maybe 80% the same as the old part. That is good enough to not be noticed unless you are looking for it.
Huh. When you mixed paint in, did it work the way you wanted colour-wise? My specific problem is that the last owner of my apartment building painted the popcorn ceilings (and every other surface) a depressing light grey with a pearl sheen. The popcorn is failing in sheets and cracks -- the paint bonded with the popcorn, and it's peeling like you'd imagine (my guess is the pre-popcorn surface was painted in oil). In most of the rooms I've very gently painted the ceilings with good quality white ceiling paint and repaired the cracks with a spray at the end, with mixed results (so this video is incredibly helpful -- thank you!). In one of the apartments, the grey ceiling actually looks attractive, but the stippling is really failing -- the last one to be repaired. I'm just weighing options at this point, but I'm interested in trying to keep the existing grey colour and stippling if I can. Any advice on working with this product and tinting it would be greatly appreciated.
great vid, thumbs up finish. about to fix my aunt's place. looks like a mud mixed with something (sand perhaps?). will it look the same if i use a thin foam roller instead of dubbing?
Thanks for this video. It helped us know what to do to repair our ceiling over the kitchen table. The strips under ours we peeling but went back into place once we applied this repair. Thanks a lot.
I saw another guy glob this stuff up there with a putty knife, then roll over it with a roller brush. Seemed to even it out nicely and was pretty quick. I haven't tried it yet, but plan on it soon
HI, I'm currently trying to patch a circle hole in my ceiling from a light fixture and I ran into this product online. Do I need to put mud first once I screw in a piece of dry wall then apply this popcorn product or can I go straight to the popcorn product and dab it on?
What kind of primer did you use? You applied it with a brush in your video but the link in your description is for a spray type ceiling paint/primer. What did you dab on with the brush?
Did you apply a second coat, as it appears a one coat looks good enough, how long did you wait after you applied the primer and how long after the second coat
I ultimately applied two "coats"... I did it all once, let it dry (probably only waited 30 to 40 minutes) and then decided it needed a little more popcorn to blend in with the rest of the ceiling better. The second pass was just sort of filling in spots that looked a little sparse.
Extremely helpful video, and a great product, much better than the spray. Many useful tips, right down to the Dollar Store paint brush to apply and stipple.
Thank you soo much I went to help a neighbor set attic plywood and first thing I did was put 1 foot size hole in her ceiling :( now I'm sure I can make it right
I watched your video because the young man fixing my attic broke my ceiling in two spots. I went to Home Depot and fixed the first very small area to where it looked ok. My second area is much larger. The repair (in progress) looks horrible. I rewatched your video and lo and behold your container has popcorn in it. Mine hardly has any. Not certain what to do now if Homax is making their popcorn patch repair with practically no popcorn in it.
I bought two containers to repair my ceiling. The first had hardly any pigment inside. The second container I ended up shaking the heck out of it before I opened it. When I did open it, it was thick, and there was a lot of pigment. I applied the next coat from the second container, and the spot where I did the repair is no longer noticable. I did not shake the first container, and just stirred it. I do not know if shaking it made the formula thicken. Also, at The Home Depot where they had this product on the shelf there were several containers that had lids that were not completely sealed. It looked like people were opening the containers to look for the heavier consistency formula because that formula works better. I applied the formula with a brush, and built up a consistent layer to be even with the existing ceiling. This required several coats. I would use this formula again. It is better than the stuff you buy in a can.
Yep, pretty white. Not BRIGHT white, but white. You may need to apply a thin coat of flat white paint (usually for ceilings) to make it match perfectly. But matching paint color on a 20 year old popcorn ceiling might be a little tricky. I got pretty lucky, I think.
my entire living room was sagging & brown i had to scrape it off & now it looks super duper bad smh, i gotta great big bucket of this stuff from Home Depot to replace it with
Good video. Very helpful. Pleasantly done nice style. I asked the lowes paint pro and they had no clue how to to use it but the 26 dollar can of texture spray vs this 7 dollar container was worth the try!
Totally agree. I don't really do this for "the views" as much as I do it to help people. I have been trying to convert some of the videos to shorts, but the portrait / landscape thing has been... annoying. This is really just a hobby for me.
The Homax popcorn repair tub varies greatly from container to container. You need to check each container out at the hardware store to make sure you get a super thick consistency. The first tub I bought was watery, way too thin, and way too little popcorn. I bought the thickest homax tub I could find. Then I bought Zinsser Roll A texture additive (coarse). Also the brush method didn’t work well. Probs because homax gave Home Depot a bad batch of product. I used a roller and it worked perfectly had to do three coats because the first coat was worthless (watered down homax tub)
I bought the thickest formula, and shook it up well before using. I did not stir like it states on the directions. I applied several coats with a brush, and you can't even tell where the repair spot was on the ceiling. This formula works better than the stuff you buy in a can that is an upshot formula. If you buy look for the thickest formula. At The Home Depot several containers had loose lids because people were lifting the lid to check the formula for thickness. This stuff does work.
I have a job at the end of the month fixing a few small areas. Man am I glad I saw this video. Looks great!
Tom explains it well, thanks.. Relaxing, like watching Bob Ross do a painting. 😆
How about using a piece of sponge to dab it
I’m not going to even try the spray can popcorn I’ve already bought after seeing this. I’ve done it in the past several times with pretty good results but what a mess. This definitely looks like a much more controlled approach. Thank you.

Getting ready to tackle a small popcorn repair today. Thanks for the video 🙂
I didn’t realize how much people hated the spray until I looked up videos! Definitely going to return the Homax spray to get this stuff! Thank you!
I wish I saw this video before my repair. I've tried the spray twice now...no amount of can shaking has produced good results..Should have got this!!
I just used it for a job. Just looks like shaving cream. A waste of 30 dollars
Several rounds of preventative plumbing work left our basement ceiling looking like swiss cheese. This looks like the low mess, low stress method I've been searching for.

just used the same product for a patch on my ceiling. great produce. great advice from Tom
Thank you, Tom. Excellent explanation in a layman's language, I didn't know it is so simple process to fix small blank spots on a popcorn ceiling👌.
Thanks for this video. I have a small repair in one of the bedrooms and bought the same product but no idea how to use it. This is really helpful.
Cut some of the old paint out and bring the sample to Home Depot or Sherman Williams
Thanks for this video. I bought this same stuff and then found this video. My ceiling came out pretty good. It looks maybe 80% the same as the old part. That is good enough to not be noticed unless you are looking for it.
Thanks for this video, i have some spots on our ceiling that need repair and i think this should do the trick!
I mixed a bit of paint into mine before application. Helpt to adhere and blend with the original color.
Huh. When you mixed paint in, did it work the way you wanted colour-wise? My specific problem is that the last owner of my apartment building painted the popcorn ceilings (and every other surface) a depressing light grey with a pearl sheen. Thanks for this video. It helped us know what to do to repair our ceiling over the kitchen table. The strips under ours we peeling but went back into place once we applied this repair. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for this! I was dreading having to use a spray for the small area I have to repair. Much appreciated. Cheers!
Very helpful video. I’ve never worked with this stuff before, but now I know what to do. 👍🏻
Thanks for the video, have a small 6” by 6” patch and a few other small areas to repair. Your video was clear
Good Job man very helpful for todays project
Hi can I use spackling instead?
I just use drywall mud and dab it on. It turns out looking the same. Won't even notice it once it dries.
Spraying and scraping off the existing popcorn is an optional step right?
Thanks tom! Helpful for me to plan out my project.
Can I use homax ceiling texture with orange peel on the wall I need to texture?
Could you give me a yes or no like now has to be done like ASAP
Never mind I'll try it by myself
Thanks my friend wonderful video exactly what I was looking for
Primer was just paint primer? Or, special for popcorn compound? Thx.
I just used flat white primer. Nothing special.
Home Depot sells all surface primer which dries in 1 hour
I saw another guy glob this stuff up there with a putty knife, then roll over it with a roller brush. Seemed to even it out nicely and was pretty quick. I haven't tried it yet, but plan on it soon
Thanks Tom, mine job turned out good, appreciate your video!
Thank you so much Tom for all the video.
Obviously scrapes this easily if the ceiling has never been painted. And you want to use oil-based Kilz or equivalent with water stains.
Ive used white thinset mix it soft and apply with sponge
How do you know that this ceiling doesn't have asbestos? Not even sure if they still put popcorn ceilings after asbestos was outlawed.
HI, I'm currently trying to patch a circle hole in my ceiling from a light fixture and I ran into this product online. Do I need to put mud first once I screw in a piece of dry wall then apply this popcorn product or can I go straight to the popcorn product and dab it on?
That's a super video. Just followed your instructions and it was great, thanks for taking the time to do it!
What kind of primer did you use? You applied it with a brush in your video but the link in your description is for a spray type ceiling paint/primer. What did you dab on with the brush?
I like the roller method... but this looks pretty nice
Thank you Sir.great job.one of the best and simple solution in the you tube world.
that looks mint bro!

Thank you for the video, got the idea and product from Amazon, this is really helpful for how to apply it.
Great video I had a leak and was trying to figure out how to patch that
I’m impressed. Thank you!☺️
Thank you for the video and the information!
OMG, Thank you! 😂
Hi Tom, you are a life savior. Thanks much bro.
Can it be painted?
Where did you get the product? What is the name of the product?
Homax Popcorn Ceiling Patch. Home Depot.
Thank you sir, very nice, simple and informative.
Homax was too thin and sloppy. On my 2nd coat I used Zinsser and it fit a lot better, was thicker and didn't make much of a mess
Great job and lesson. Thanks!
Thank you for posting the video.
Thank you soo much I went to help a neighbor set attic plywood and first thing I did was put 1 foot size hole in her ceiling :( now I'm sure I can make it right
Thank you!
What about asbestos?
Great vid, looks good! Have repair at rental unit. Not looking forward to it. Anyone ever tell you you look like Seth Rogan a bit? 😂 - take care!
Thank you for the video! I’m gonna try to do it as well!
Blends in
Zinsser brand had zero popcorn.. it is same as joint compound.. taking it back to Ace Hardware.
me ayudo mucho
Well done, great video!!

Tjanks for the help
Does it dry and turn white?
Yep, pretty white. Not BRIGHT white, but white. You may need to apply a thin coat of flat white paint (usually for ceilings) to make it match perfectly. But matching paint color on a 20 year old popcorn ceiling might be a little tricky. I got pretty lucky, I think.

@@djmegahurtz probably works well for small patching only
Your damage is a miracle compared to my circle of damage. Wow one tub will definitely not do my job
Good job 👏
Good job sir thank you
Thank you
You're good !!! 👍👍

very stratifying

Great DIY fix video---thx for posting! I think you'd get more way more views if you condensed it down to 2 minutes.

Awesome!!

I recommend do not and I mean do not scraped the whole ceiling. It is a “lot” of trouble than it is worth. Been there done that
Hello. Few people know about the stretch ceiling. I shoot training videos on installing a stretch ceiling. Come to the channel I will be glad to see.
Good
Thanks for this video... but one thing......
Who ever thought popcorn ceiling would be a great idea sucks lol. I hate it.
Agreed. It was once thought to be "decorative"...
just use a mop...
Thanks good video Seth Rogan
A sponge will work better.

How did it NOT work? Did you use REAL popcorn? 🍿
