Thanks for this video - I discovered WoAD this last week and am really amazed at it. LOL I had also followed the advice about buying a cheap Android phone as it did not run on my iPhone. Funny part was I eventually swapped my SIM over to the Android phone, and my iPhone is now in WiFi only mode. It just made me realise that some nice things run on Android. But WoAD is amazing for all the different options it offers. such as the auto-connect on sessions including Telnet.

Great video. Only omission was that you need to force WoAD to update your position by going into Position Report before it will download your list of RMS gateways. I find this app really hard to use. What is particularly frustrating is the lack of information on what is happening with your packet session. You get some bare bones log entries and that's it. When you fail to connect, there's no way to diagnose the problem. At least in Winlink Express, there is a log of the packets going back and forth. With WoAD, you just see that your session is "Running", which is utterly useless.
Personally I prefer RadioMail on iOS. It gives better feedback during the connection. I do still run WoAD on an Android tablet though from time to time.

@@dangermandave67 - I agree this app is hard to use and there is no clear path on how to send and receive a message. It is all hit or miss. And in fact, I still have not been able to connect through a digirepeater yet but I'm doing things a bit different, using aprsdroid on a bluetooth, connecting to a Chinese made HG-UV98 aprs radio which has built in bluetooth as well. Its all an adventure.
I have been beating my head against this tablet. I’m going to go through the setting like you showed and see if I can get something to work. I’m using a wolphilink though, which I don’t think will do FM. I’m not sure about that though. I got it for just about nothing and know very little about it.
Have woad and TNC2 set up. Woad/TNC causes my radio to transmit, i can confirm it is transmitting by another radio, but the message goes no where. I let it sit for 15 minutes and still shows running. Same phone, same radio, same TNC to same repeater location APRSDroid works fine. Any ideas?
I enjoy your videos, and these are good for those who already have the Mobilinkd. However, I must point out that the Mobilinkd is on permanent back order and has not shipped for most of 2022. You also do videos showing the RPi, which are now available, but at a least 2.5 the cost of what we paid for them in 2020, making them a high cost option. I recently picked up the now venerable $60 notebook from MicroCenter last weekend and am installing Ubuntu to test it out as an alternative to the the once widely available and inexpensive RPi...
Yeah it's a bummer that the Mobilinkd has been out of stock for so long. This video was done at the request of others who were struggling to get their Mobilinkd working with WoAD. I will be starting a series on 14OCT2022 with the $60 laptop.

What about if you want to use VARA. I guess you'd use a Signalink, or maybe a Digirig? Any advice?
Can't run VARA from mobile phones yet. You can run it on a Pi and connect to it from the phone with RadioMail though. Not ideal but it works ok.
Grateful for this! RMS channel selection comes back empty - zero choices. Any wisdom what I could be missing?
I was able to load gateways by manually entering my grid square in WOAD. Bandaid to continue learning/testing.
On the screen which displays the gateway list, try clicking the refresh button in the bottom right corner.
@@KM4ACK thanks! Manual entry for now as I navigate location settings on graphene OS android. Watching your Connections Expectations video next as closest gateway to grid square is 44 away
I am also facing the same problem.
I am having the same issue. No place in the app that I can find to manually place grid square so I’m not showing any stations.

Set to desire frequency. Turn off all tx/rx tones. Open squelch.
trying to set woad up. under session settings I try and find a node but it says none in 300kms. No idea what kms is but I'm 4 miles from a winlink gateway. when I try and update via internet it shows a grid square that is not mine (JJ00xx)
Maybe a permission issue? Make sure the app has access to the GPS
Does WoAD allow you to compose a message? Does it handle the in/out box functions?

I successfully used WoAD with a TH-74A at 9600 baud.
What is your antenna?

I have come to observe that all the videos about these things are just focused around USA as these stations never show up in 300 kms range anyone across the world other than USA.
Unfortunate for users outside US.
My computer does not have Bluetooth 😢
