When Peter Falk passed away they ran an "In Memoriam" tribute reel at one of the big award ceremonies and the final clip was him saying "As you wish" from the end of this movie. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

You were right, they did model Lord Farquaad after Prince Humperdinck! As for the Zorro esque get up and facial hair, this whole movie is director Rob Reiner's homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood and the swashbuckling, adventure films he grew up on, with Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks etcetera.

Also Cary Elwes' memoir about this movie is great, I especially love the part about having to film the Miracle Max scenes. Billy Crystal and Carol Kane improvised so much and were so funny that Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) bruised his ribs by desperately trying to keep from laughing long enough to finish the scene.

    "INCONCEIVABLE."
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Classic Adventure/Romantic/Comedy. Very few films come close to how awesome this movie is.
Fun Fact: Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin performed all of their own sword-fighting after many hours of training. According to Rob Reiner, the only stunt performed by Elwes' stunt double was one flip during the "Chatty Duelists" scene.
Bonus Fact: Despite his character Fezzik's almost-superhuman strength, André René Roussimoff's back problems at the time prevented him from actually lifting anything heavy. Robin Wright had to be attached to wires in the scene where Buttercup jumps from the castle window into Fezzik's arms because he couldn't support her himself.

Nonsense. (Sorry, but it is.) Of course she could have gotten the pitcher herself! But watch the scene again. The pitcher is hanging right over her head. Buttercup was giving Westley a reason (and tacit permission) to get close - VERY close - and he took full advantage of that permission.
Buttercup is a lot smarter than some people think. How else was she supposed to express her interest in Westley? "Hey, Farm Boy! Let's go have a roll in the hay!"? The only thing Westley has ever said to her is "As you wish," not even "I love you." Buttercup must find some subtle way to tell Westley that she returns his interest, and this was a darned good one.

Christopher Guest, who played the 6-fingered man, is the brilliant talent behind movies like Best In Show and Waiting for Guffman. He's also been married to Jamie Lee Curtis for years, and is a member of the British aristocracy. And when Mandy Patinkin was duelling the 6 fingered man near the end, to channel the level of anger and revenge he imagined he was fighting the cancer that took his own father's life. Which is why the "I want my father back you son of a bitch" line was so fierce.

The Bog of Eternal Stench is from Labyrinth.

Andre could drink (in one siting)
A 24, two bottles of wine, a bottle of liquor, and still was sober enough to be designated driver.
Once at a bar, a group of men harassed him until Andre lost it.
He chased them to their car, then flipped their car when they wouldn’t get out.
Then the drunk guys had to explain to a cop how an angry giant flipped their car.

The book this is based on is just a joy to read, it's like this with its quotable lines but even moreso. It's got a wonky frame story that's completely fictional that's meant to set up that this was a real book and a real legend, but the narrative bits are *chefs kiss*. You'll love Fezzik and Inigo twice as much after reading their backstories and further adventures.

The castle interior shots were filmed in an actual castle in England. Inigo and The Man in Black's sword duel at the beginning was performed 100% by the actors -- except for the gymnastics on the conveniently located bar they swung on. Andre the Giant had a very bad back (not knees); he could not do half the stunts going all-out; the stage hands had to build-in aspects of the feat that placed no pressure on Andre's back (stopping the portcullis, catching Buttercup who jumped from the window, et al.). Also, it was a double who rode out on the white horse at the very end.

It knows exactly what it is, and does not take itself too seriously, but does not fall in to folly. The writing is very good, and the actors took their rolls seriously and their performances were spot on. This movie is the ultimate romance but shoves in enough adventure and comedy that it is far from a chick flick. The director knew what he wanted from this and got it in spades. Pure perfection. He thinks it's fine for a movie, cos it's spectacle and all, but that a real fencer wants to end the fight ASAP with minimal movement. Your commentary is great, keep it up!
If you think the narrative structure is strange though, read the book. Before "meta" was a word, this should be the OG definition. The author of the book also wrote the screenplay, and the book has meta references about the fake author of the "original" book he adopted it from. William Goldman is a rockstar for making the only movie ever that was better than the book in the minds of people who were fans of the book.
Edit: This movie is why I spent way too much time worrying about quick sand from ages 3 to ... Well im 41 and still have an irrational need to test sand before I step on it.

Cary Elwes probably most popular for this although his Men In Tights appearance might be up there. Now-a-days he can be seen as the smarmy mayor in Stranger Things Season 3. Mandy Patakin (Inigo) is best known for Criminal Minds and Homeland (besides this movie). Prince Humperdink is also in Fright Night. Count Rugen is married to Jamie Lee Curtis. BTW, Wallace Shawn's character was killed by the poison which is why he wasn't at the end of the movie. Billy Crystal and Carol Kane are legends.
