I just watched this video again and realized this was the similar hike we did this summer. What a difference 3 months makes! We went Crawford Notch to the Mizphah Hut and tented at the sites there which we hated! We had to pay to put our tent on a hard wooden deck. The views from Pierce and Eisenhower were great. Thanks for all of your work on these videos...they get me through the winter!
Wow, epic video! I visited that area for a day hike in 05. From the Highland Centre, I think. The top was amazing, walk through trees then all of a sudden on the top! Thanks for memories. Nice.
Awesome trek you have here. And the Gray Jays, they love bacon. Had some visit my wife and I last summer camping at Cupsuptic Lake campground north west of Rangley Lake,Maine. Mt. Washington used to hold the world record for highest wind speed until another mountain topped it not too long ago. Over 150 people have died on Mt. Washington. It certainly isn't "a cake walk". Kudos to you for braving the trails and sharing your videos.
It's an official AMC White Mountians Trail Map (the water and tear-proof version) You can get them directly from the AMC or at most online retailers for around $10. Very lightweight, durable and detailed maps.
Awesome, you'll be there about 2 weeks after this video was shot. I'm sure there will have been some melt by then, but probably still a similar amount of snow in that area. In fact, in the Tuckerman Ravine, you'll want to check avalanche conditions as well, although at this point falling ice is probably a more likely safety issue. Check out the Mt. Washington Avalanche Center site for daily updates. Have fun!

Yeah, it was a lot of fun to experience that much snow without the extreme cold, pretty unique. That being said, I'm getting amped for warmer weather so I can ditch some gear and knock out some higher mileage treks. Of course, with that comes the bugs... :D
It's an generic canister stove I found online. If you'd like to see it up close, I have a vid on it as well - titled "$8 MSR Pocket Rocket Knock Off?". This is the second trip I've tried it on. The first time was at 15 degrees and it worked well. This trip was only in the 30's and it worked perfect. No problems igniting and the fuel efficiency seemed better as well, due to the warmer temps. Overall, I'm a fan, but as soon as the snow goes away - I'm back to the 1/4oz alcohol stove! ;)
I couldn't remember if they finally settled that controversy at the time of filming, but but you're right. It looks like they officially confirmed it in 2010 - 253 mph! They still had the plaque on the summit of Mt Washington when I was up there in 2011 - I wonder if they finally gave in and changed it? :)
Ya I haven't seen any trails other than february this year need to make the time. My back was out now I have been working on the garage and getting camper ready for summer family time

Oh man it was nearly perfect up there on this trip. Clear and sunny. Woah! You hiked up there with a 4 lb tent! Dang. How the heck did you sleep on just that pad? That can only have a r rating of like 2! You need like 5, 6 R preferably to sleep on a frozen ground/ snow. My butt or hips would have frozen right off me! I just did a test by the house, in the teens (18F) with a thermarest 3 season 3.7 R pad with a thermarest classic ridgecrest pad under it and it was nowhere near enough! I was sore hipped and frozen butt cheecked within the hour lol. Oh, looks like some sort of small pad with it too, but still. Doesn't look like much. Looks like less than my 3 season pad. I don't get it. Man, I was freezing on more. In a good bag too that works good on the mondoking well down in the single digits, probably lower.
Great video Sintax, sorry about the sunburn, I noticed it there the morning of day 2 and cringed! After the second encounter with your birdie friend did you see him/her any more? Also, do you know of the frozen falls you saw near the beginning are up or downstream of the ones you ran into on day 2?
Do you do anything during the week to maintain any level of fitness or do you go from completely sedentary to busting out these difficult hikes? We do day hikes in North Georgia/North Carolina et. al. 16 miles from point a to point B wipes me out and I walk about 35 miles during the week. I guess I'm just old... Enjoying all your videos, especially these hikes and your gear videos as well. You have a great hobby!

I have the choice between going 22 inches and 5 inch tails or 25 inches and 5inch tails mainly hiking whites. What would you suggest lightning assents by MSR weighing around 180ish without gear. I tried 30's the other day the trail was already packed and they were way over kill and very hard to maneuver. Thanks man
Cool. Your videos are getting better. I like the fact that you are pointing out your locations on a map. Dont forget to invest in .kisture-wicking underlayers. Cotton bites, as it absorbs moisture and keeps it pressed on your skin.

My snowshoes had some steel teeth on the bottom that provided some decent traction. I've got some new i ones now with even more aggressive teeth (MSR Denali Ascent)
Very cool. What happened to the bird? There's a hike not far from me.. kind of a butt kicker but at the top I can feed the birds a little trail mix. They'll fly down and land on my hand to eat it. Pretty cool. And I get a cheeseburger on the way home. >_o
CJ Heaney You could always get a straight forward hammock without a bug net and focus on the tarp for now. Down the road, you could just add a separate bug net. I'm planning on getting this one from Dutchware to add to my winter hammock, once bug season kicks in: www.dutchwaregear.com/fronkey-style-bugnet.html He's got netless hammocks that might work for you as well.

Sometimes it's the small creatures that are more of a worry than bigger foes like bears, especially in my stomping grounds the Adirondacks. Watch out for the chipmunks if you ever make your way there

your bird friend was a gray jay. they're bold and pretty aggressive when stealing food from campers.
Out of interest, what stove are you using, it's not one I recognise. How did the gas canister work out at elevation with low temps - all ok?
