Bought a 1982 Westy last summer. As I'm in North Dakota - its now in storage for the winter. We got out a few times camping last fall before winter set in - looking to more adventures in the future!! This is my 2nd camper. Such great vehicles.

My wife and I had the 1980 VW Camper. I don't remember if it was auto or manual. We went any where and no hotels. From ky to fl. and parts of tenn. my wife 15yrs older than I so she has passed on and I'm left alone. Now at 74 looking to buy a VW CAMPER soon as I can. on the road for what time I have left to enjoy. thks for showing / postings.

I'm looking at buying one of these but my mechanic just warned me that they break down all the time. He put it nicely as, "it's an adventure" to have one of these. How has your upkeep been on it?
I've owned it 11 years. It's 40 years old now and I just did an engine rebuild in 2021, but only because I melted a pistion from an oil cooler leak. The air cooled engines are reliable as long as you have full engine cooling tins. I have done about 10K in maintenance including the rebuild over those 10 years. My van is mechanically good, but now body and paint need work.

Very nice van! Are you satisfied with 2.0? Mine is also air cooled, but it's a 1.6 version, and it's to weak and to slow for this car. So I just wonder to change the motor to something stronger, or maybe 2.0 would be a good solution..

@X Girl , And yet millions of VW campers were sold over the decades and they're still in demand today. So it would seem a lot of people don't agree with you. I owned a '71 camper. I put in a Porta Potty which came in handy especially on those cold nights when venturing outside was not appealing at all. And yes it was under powered and yes it did require more constant maintenance. But the beauty was you could do a lot of the work yourself. When I owned mine it was also my daily driver. It would fit in any parking space or garage. You cannot say the same thing about Toyota Chinooks or Dolphins.
@X Girl , Well I owned a VW camper for 5 years and it took me over most of North America. It was one of the most fun vehicles I ever owned. And you claim to dislike them so much, yet you owned 4? Curious.
