Ok, this made me cry. Not just by how well-made this is, but... ...the moment you realize that your dad isn't some guy that "thinks he knows everything and naggs you everyday" but he's just like you! He make ends meet, he lives and survives in the same way you do, with the tomorrow's uncertainty knocking at the door. And there's a moment in your life that... you become him! You get on his shoes and then, you have a cathartic experience where you see yourself in your child, where you stand where your dad (or mom) stood, telling about life and how difficulty and wild it is. This moment is where moments, and cars, like this become essential parts of your life - building who you are and what you'll be. This is life. Live it now!
Very well spoken and a lovely comment. This video hit home sort of. I never really had a father. It made growing up difficult. Although this being said I still had great memories, and had some male figures to look up to. I hope to become a great father who is understanding, funny, and firm. Although the lack of a father this video still had a feeling of nostalgia.
this hit way too close to home in tears right now, my father recently died this year and i always knew him as that. he was just like me living his life and always afraid of what tomorrow will bring. thank you for reminding me that although my dad was dead-beat and had many problems he still survived and he wanted to make his life an example of what not to do. he would always be honest and real with me because he knew that i understood his problems i would never know the severity of them after he passed but he still held on for the worst and he would never give up. he would always tell me "me caigo mil veces, pero me paro mil y una veces" meaning that he would fall 1000 times but he would stand up 1001 times. he will always be in my and his family's hearts and be remembered as the good person he still was despite his many crises

I'll be honest - this video cut deep. I've never had that romantic connection with my parents, especially my father, who although is a car guy has a very different taste than me and we rarely share our thoughts when it comes to cars or motorcycles for that matter. The fact that your own parent doesn't at least notice that you're trying to improve yourself when it comes to your hobby - hurts, it hurts alot. Some days more than others but it's an ever lasting numb pain that you learn to live with. This video underlines the fact that cars are more than just objects that take you from A to B, they're rolling art. This just made my day just a little bit better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Cars are, in a very real way, a means both of transportation and, for some, a means of expression. The important thing is to understand that one's appreciation for cars, much like for more traditional forms of art, is invariably subjective. Everyone has their own values regarding the aesthetic they prefer, and the best thing to do is acknowledge that your preferences may not align, but to want to know what it is that the other party values and appreciates about the things they like. That is the best way to appreciate art. Not focusing solely on the things that make an innate sort of sense to you because its aesthetic aligns with your preferences, but to learn how to appreciate the other because you know why people like it.
My first car was a 84 vanagon gl... My second car was a 87 vanagon gl... Unless you REALLY REALLY want one.. I say steer clear of it.. These things have so many little gremlins and problems that WILL happen.. Head gaskets go every couple of years and other issues similar to that.. The cooling system is a nightmare, I had the engine and transmission out on my driveway so many times with my van.. They can be fun if you really want one, but unless you REALLY REALLY want one, don't buy one
I love this, I want a more videos like this, not saying that the original type of RCR videos are bad, but I’m definitely looking forward to the next special
I missed the shot of the CN tower and did a double take when I saw the sweeping shot of OCAD! Unexpected Toronto is always a pleasure to see. I see a surprising amount of Volkswagen vans around here
In South Africa these often had their engines replaced with the Essex 3 liter (free litre in cockney) and they pulled really well even with a caravan on tow.
Country shut down due to worldwide pandemic - "It happens." Lost job and on unemployment for the first time in my life - "Eh. What are you gonna do?" RCR posts video with actual cinematic production values - "HOLY HELL THE WORLD IS ENDING"
Most of this didn't have any toilet humor in it though, I guess there was one reference to jacking off during the "ad" but none of the usual fart/poop jokes, no "World War Brown." Truly amazing quality though, his usual analytic side.
This is the deepest thing i've seen since Bojack season 6. Literally a tear jerker. It's a shame we keep finding ourselves repeating history with our own children, being distant, not understanding, always short and busy. You and your parents are a little older than me and mine. I didn't grow up with station wagons and Westphalia vans, just pickup trucks. So we gave in to our own personal nostalgia and bought the same model truck that my dad had. We take our kids fishing and hunting in the same spots trying to relive dead history, trying to get the good times back. To all of you who are making the same mistakes as us, stop living in the past it's gone. Your kids are here now and they won't be kids for long. Appreciate them for what they are before they turn into you.
Mr. Regular - I don't know if it's the pandemic speaking, but this has got to be the best auto enthusiast video production since Top Gear. Clarkson, Hammond, May era Top Gear. P.S. - The night shots of Toronto were very well done.
this is the first time I teared up watching a car review, and I don't usually tear up for anything. The last part about rolling time capsules really got to me.
this is a production of such quality I had never seen regularcars venture into in the years and years I've watched you. You were not just telling a story that touched us deep down, that we could truly relate to, but you showed it, in every amazing shot of nostalgia... and then the orbital buffer came out and I remembered who you were again.
Wish it were possible to give more than one upvote. My only VW experience was a 99 Jetta VR6 MT, so I cannot comment on the content; just so impressed with the video quality.
I didnt think it was possible to fall more in love with these vans than I already was. But this video and your words pulled on a really tight heartstring and I thank you for that. I think thats what im searching for. I missed out on a lot of imporant life moments with my old man as he had to work away to keep our family above water. I thank you for making this video because I went a little astray from the path ive been walking on towards me getting my own T3. Thank you.
I bought my 1982 for $2500 with a hole the size of a grapefruit in the side of the diesel block. Thorough restoration with a 1.9l TDI and custom trans brought it up to around $8500. It *can* be done. Btw, hippies build their own. Capitalists charge $20k. (lol)
An Astro van is a great modern alternative. 2 grand gets you a higher mileage little more beat up passenger model with super comfortable seats great visibility and lots of room. Gas mileage is the major downfall, you only get a 4.3 v6 and 4 speed auto with RWD or AWD.
Yeah. Somehow seems antithetical to the whole idea of living a "free and easy" hippie lifestyle. It seems the Westfalia is only a facade being used to appear different and wearing the skin of the 60's kids as you're literally paying 20 grand to look poor. Meh. It's all a little depressing. If kids want to live a great experience, just get a cheap Dodge Caravan, remove the back seats, put a bed in it. And don't spend your time posting about it on Instagram.
I've been watching RCR since season one, I've seen every damn video multiple times. This is my new favorite video. I hope you guys can make a collab like this again, once a year thing would be amazing.
Long-time fan. Didn't expect the camera work and music to be so high-quality. While the cobbled together look of previous entries was always charming, and Mr. Regular has always been funny yet profound, I didn't really expect to cry.
When the video started I was impressed with the professionalism and thought you had moved and and stepped up. Then the middle played and I was reminded of your roots. Keep up the great work
I grew up going on vacation on one of these many times a year. It feels like in my country everybody swapped the engines with subaru ones. Never seemed to overheat and could easily hit 100kph pretty fast. I think we went as fast as 130+ kph and the car is not designed to go that fast. Everything inside starts to shake and rattle. You take a modern car to 160 kph and nothing happens. You take this to similar speeds it's like you're in an action movie rocketing down to a planet with a space station breaking up all around you. This is the pinnacle of what a car can be for me. The least amount of space for the max amount of comfort. You could sleep 6 people in one of these if you wanted. All for the exact same parking space real estate of a Honda Odyssey. They can't be beat.
Having watched this channel for years now, it is amazing to see how far you guys have taken it while keeping in touch with the style and humor that defines it. This was truly a work of art in every respect. Extremely well done!
This gave me a super comfy and safe feeling. Like when you are heading to bed and the air conditioner is blowing, and you get the sheets wrapped around you just write so none of the air hits you. A safe and cozy cocoon of your own, thats this video.

At 8:50 I got hard feels. Got to be honest that was a very heartfelt moment. That’s coming from someone that has life problems with their parents. Thanks Mr. Regular, you’re a good person. Your parents should be proud of you.
Mr regular, this video hit me HARD in the feels, and for many reasons. I barely know by biological father as my mother hid me and cut contact with him and for good reason as he was and still is an alcoholic drug addicted semi driver, so because of it my grandfather and grandmother (who we still live with) took me under their wing and helped raise me. He was and still is an avid sportsman and has taught me most of the things I know about fishing and engines. I knew from the first time my school held a father-son day that I was different as everyone else’s dad was younger than my grandfather, but there was something special about our relationship. We shared the same moments, had just as many funny moments as anyone else would have had with their dad except he was slightly older than everyone else. And despite him and me being almost 41 years apart from each other, we get along like we were brothers. He drives an 09’ Chevy 2500hd gasser which he still has today, and since now that I have my permit I taxi him around. What I’m saying is since he bought that truck 5 years ago it was a sign that all the hell we went through was worth it, and when I start that truck up and hear it’s Lopey and pissed off idle, I think about the moments we shared over the years and what’s to come in the future, and that life doesn’t matter about age or wealth or your social standing, it just matters if you don’t regret what you did all those years ago and if you had fun through it all.
I think this might be the quintessential review. A Frost poem derailed momentarily by dadaism, like a nice wine tasting with a key bump in the bathroom before settling back into malbec induced fuzziness.
Video starts: Oh Damn Few more seconds in: OH DAMN Video ends: Now I'm nostalgic... time to rewatch. Seriously, awesome video guys, can't wait to show this to my dad and see his reaction when he has that 'click' of realization about cars that you shed light on.

I didn't expect to have my heart tugged at like this when I clicked on your video. You have outdone yourself. Many thanks to all who were involved in making this.
Damn. You guys did great with this one. Content AND quality! One of the things I love about RCR is the little bits of feeling poking through the humor, capturing the subject vehicle's place in history and the lives of the people who drove or still drive them. In this, that feeling was like a stadium light. Cars are art. Cars are wheeled capsules of memories, sometimes so much so that they stop being a car and start being a character. It's why some people seek out cars that, out of the context of their era, are completely undesirable and all but forgotten. Well done!
Why is the production quality so high i’m scared.

This video underlines the fact that cars are more than just objects that take you from A to B, they're rolling art. This just made my day just a little bit better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Hi Stefan, yeah my Dad is a huge classic Ford guy. When he scoffs at my love of Japanese cars it hurts.
I was literally looking into buying one as a project. This won’t help
The prices on these are already sky high, they went up years ago.
I was actually surprised to see like 8 of these some in 4x4 fashon in a yard where live. Very cool
they are all over pch here in the south bay.get one hard work will pay off!
I spend more time fixing mine then camping in mine... see my page for videos ;)
It's criminal that it's three years later and this video still only has 280k views...
This is the most beautiful video of any car channels on TH-cam
I love this, I want a more videos like this, not saying that the original type of RCR videos are bad, but I’m definitely looking forward to the next special
Okay didn’t expect to be holding back tears during a regular car review
I failed to hold them back.
From 8:54 till the credits was pure beauty..
Theres a civic review from rcr that also choked me up.
Same
@@fdude555 you talking about the civoc wagon review? Or maybe it was the accord wagon. Either way, that one aas fucking tough too.
i can say nothing else but "Good job, i enjoyed this immensely.."
@Kevin There are adaptor plates for Lima engines.
Country shut down due to worldwide pandemic - "It happens."
Lost job and on unemployment for the first time in my life - "Eh. What are you gonna do?"
RCR posts video with actual cinematic production values - "HOLY HELL THE WORLD IS ENDING"
And no overt fart or poop jokes, only one brief mention of jacking off. WHAT IS HAPPENING?
@InfiniteMushroom RCR doesn't need toilet paper. He wipes with an angle grinder wire brush. See the Suzuki GS500e review, 0:54.
When a production value is this high, 12 mintues mean like a full length feature film.
It was gorgeous.
The only thing funnier than normal Mr. Regular toilet humor is Mr. Regular toilet humor thrown into a higher budget production
Most of this didn't have any toilet humor in it though, I guess there was one reference to jacking off during the "ad" but none of the usual fart/poop jokes, no "World War Brown." Truly amazing quality though, his usual analytic side.
Beautiful shots of downtown Toronto. I miss wandering downtown after work. I miss wandering, I miss work.
Finally got my wife to understand rcr. This is top tier on every end.
@@gameworkerty But we both know that won't likely happen
Mr. Regular - I don't know if it's the pandemic speaking, but this has got to be the best auto enthusiast video production since Top Gear. Clarkson, Hammond, May era Top Gear.
P.S. - The night shots of Toronto were very well done.
This sob always makes me tear up and I have to explain to people that "I'm just watching a car review"
this is the first time I teared up watching a car review, and I don't usually tear up for anything. The last part about rolling time capsules really got to me.
@Ross Bourne who the hell is cutting onions in here??
this is a production of such quality I had never seen regularcars venture into in the years and years I've watched you. You were not just telling a story that touched us deep down, that we could truly relate to, but you showed it, in every amazing shot of nostalgia... and then the orbital buffer came out and I remembered who you were again.
Dear Mr. Regular,
Do this more.
Sincerely,
Everyone
Zephym this video format makes me wanna make coffee and read a book while shitting on the toilet while pretending to be classy
We want more of this and more "my Porsche is best because it's a Ferdinand jagdpanzer"
I wrote a song just for this episode. It goes
Brown brown brown brown brown brown brown brown brown brown...
Pseudo Nym brown is love brown is life
You have no idea....
Mmmmmmm.... emergency oatmeal stores....
@@pseudonym9599 hot brown
... Brown Brown Brown Ezra Pound
Red.... I mean, what were we saying?
The ending actually got kinda emotional. This video was amazing.
“WHAT’S WITH THE HIGH QUALITY VIDEO AND MUSIC?!?!? THIS IS WRONG!!!!”
**commercial rolls*
“Ahhh, all is right with the world again!”
It's just another introduction to the opposites
Wish it were possible to give more than one upvote.
My only VW experience was a 99 Jetta VR6 MT, so I cannot comment on the content; just so impressed with the video quality.
I didnt think it was possible to fall more in love with these vans than I already was. But this video and your words pulled on a really tight heartstring and I thank you for that. I think thats what im searching for. I missed out on a lot of imporant life moments with my old man as he had to work away to keep our family above water. I thank you for making this video because I went a little astray from the path ive been walking on towards me getting my own T3. Thank you.
I still refuse to accept the 20k pricetags van life hippies charge for these on craigslist
I just looked on Craigslist and saw a few and almost threw up. Over 5k for one that’s been sitting and 18k for a running one. Mother of brown!
@@nslouka90 if you look on gowesty's site they have sold some syncros for 80k and up, they aren't cheap cars anymore
This video with its amazing production quality proves that an RCR hour-long documentary in this style would be insanely amazing.
The longform stuff - e.g. Micky Thompson - is already pretty effing great, fyi.
We need more documentary style videos like this one from time to time. This was amazing
💯/💯, one of the most practical vehicles ever made, worth the engine conversion.
It's not the destination is the journey. Slow down enjoy the ride.
Porsche B32 can do 200kh easily.
@@Darsting that wasn't meant for mortals
Im going to quickly ignore the MASSIVE production value here for a second:
Is that a Night in the Woods video game sticker @ 3:35? Amazing!
It is and its actually a postcard I taped to the door. There is also another one taped opposite of another finji game called overland.
There's also one at 4:00 with the main 4 cast
Those last lines about parenthood...I’m not crying. There’s just something in my eye.
This has got to be one of my favorite episode ever. It's up there with the EH Civic, PT Cruiser, and the Preludes.
I feel like Roman's music isn't appreciated enough.
Was about to say this, shout-out to him for that end credit song!
tbh normally he sounds like he records it in the bathroom with a phone. now it actually sounds really good
Thank you!
@@philipthedude why is it that Mr. Regular has good recording equipment and Roman's long-form videos sound like they were recorded with an iPhone 3G?
Yo, this song of his nearly had me tearing up. So good. Keep up the great work, guys!
This is absolutely the most incredible RCR production I’ve ever seen. Thank you for this
Having watched this channel for years now, it is amazing to see how far you guys have taken it while keeping in touch with the style and humor that defines it. This was truly a work of art in every respect. Extremely well done!
i feel like this is why i avoided RCR for a long time and it’s also the reason why i enjoy it today
thank you, so i`am not the only one who see the old style of RCR in this video
This gave me a super comfy and safe feeling. Like when you are heading to bed and the air conditioner is blowing, and you get the sheets wrapped around you just write so none of the air hits you. A safe and cozy cocoon of your own, thats this video.
Wow! You guys should be proud of this, it could easily be a Netflix documentary series. Beautifully written and produced with just enough RCR to keep it OG. Bravo!
Good Idea 😅👍🏼 RCR has about 6 yrs of experience
Considering everything that is going on in the world right now, I needed this more now than ever. Love the improvement in film quality, keep doing what you all do 🤘
Here in Germany those are stolen at alarming rates. It is just sad..... Also: Truly wonderful and excellent video! :D
Welcome to diversity.
why are they stolen so much ?
@@highoctanememe3617 their worth a lot of money and car of that age only need a screwdrive to start them.
The same happens with the 2006 nissan titan here in Colombia, they're easy to steal, very utilitarian and you wont get pulled over because a truck isnt really suspicious
Can't you just remove the distributor cap when you have to leave the car for a few days?
6:01 That commercial break was brilliant 😃👍
The amount of effort that went into this is greatly appreciated even though I’m not sure I’ll ever want it again. Keep it special.
AAA YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A RANDOM SONG AT THE END, BUT IT WAS ROMAN! This is the most surreal and crazy video I’ve ever seen. Also, is Frank Zappa your uncle??
This is absolutely stunning guys! I think you all have found the perfect pairing of visual aesthetic with Brian's masterful writing! Not to mention Roman's singing, OOOOF!
Could you imagine Doug demuro driving this?
Acelleration : -10 out of ten
thatdankcat
But, the practicality is +50
I've been hoping Doug would review one for all its quirks and features.
Doug would have a stroke with all his "quirks and features".
I used to have the air cooler pickup. 69 hp, it was so slow
he does my head in, "oh this classic car is slower than a $million hybrid hypercar that means it sucks" someone needs to teach him context and that its top speed is very irrelevant
Beautiful
Video starts: Oh Damn
Few more seconds in: OH DAMN
Video ends: Now I'm nostalgic... time to rewatch.
Seriously, awesome video guys, can't wait to show this to my dad and see his reaction when he has that 'click' of realization about cars that you shed light on.
In 10 minutes I feel like I’ve watched a lifetime’s worth of RCR.
and even still, i'm left wanting more!
I needed this right now.
I needed this beauty.
I needed this reminder.
I need this art. Those images. That poetry. Those songs.
I'm not even a VW fan much less a Westfalia fan.
But I needed this.
Thank you.
I've been working from home for 5 weeks in an endless series of teleconferences and net meetings. I went to get my weekly dose of regular cars and I got an art film. Thank you. TH-cam content has made all the difference in the world.
Damn thats some high production quality. It feels weird comepared to the rest of the videos, yet strangely familiar.
I’m crying smiling right now. I was gonna watch this, lay back and relax, and maybe pass out for an hour. But you made me think about the Type 2 and Miata I have in the garage and how working on those two with my dad have really been significant in our bond. Thanks RCR ❤️
Wow Can we get an hour long cut of that closing credits footage with Roman singing some chill music?
Yes.
Sidenote: I don't know why, but driving the Gardiner/Lakeshore at night is one of the most soothing things you can do. Probably because its the only time its not packed
What an incredible peace of art. The toning, the camera drives, the city, the landscape. What a spirited portray of an automotive piece of art that has influenced generations all over the world. Thank you guys for brightening up my day in these dark days. Stay safe and healthy.
I don't feel shit anymore, I don't remember the last time I cried or really felt something, but you man, you almost did it, for a moment I felt like alive, thank you from the bottom of me
I didn't expect to have my heart tugged at like this when I clicked on your video. You have outdone yourself. Many thanks to all who were involved in making this.
As an owner of one of these, and a kid that grew up in one, FREAKING NAILED IT. Thank you for this. This really pulls things together.
As a cinematographer, I can tell you that this video cost RCR many rupees. Many, many rupees.
Well done!
The most in depth look at a vanagon westfalia I've ever had the pleasure of watching
