@@jimdrager9591 Thank you! Any advice is wonderful! I think it'll be a year before we get chickens. I live on Vancouver island Canada. We have quite mild winters compared to most. Hubby wants to build a coop for the ladies. We are both excited to be able to have a veggie garden. this will definitely help keep us busy and motivated to do something everyday rather than just sitting doing nothing. Our grand kids are so happy that they can come and visit Oma and Opa.

You are absolutely right!! I live in a development. I went in March and got myself some baby chicks. I have 5 hens now giving me 5 fresh eggs a day I love it! I’ve always had a large garden and not to depend on the grocery so much this summer was fantastic. I drink my well water 💦 we all need to change the way we live !
Thank you so much for looking out for not just your family but those of us watching your channel and hearing you the warnings and also to say your not going to raise your prices on your eggs! May God continue to bless and keep you all. We all need to be praying for each other, helping one another and praying for those governing our countries, cities and towns too. Thank you!
I raise my own birds and WAS selling eggs too, but feed prices have gone from $12.50/50 lbs to $21/40 lbs. People bitched about a price increase, so no more eggs for sale. I dropped from 45 hens to a dozen that now just supply my own family. LOTS of other small farmers and homesteads near me have done the same. Things HAVE changed, prices to produce crops HAVE gone up drastically, and the work isn't any less. Most folks who bitch about the price changes aren't willing to actually DO THE WORK to produce eggs, veggies, meat, etc, so they have no idea how much goes into producing food. There is cost for land, buildings, fencing, tools, seed, livestock, feed, bedding, medical care, pest control, and the sheer hours of labor all year long... but god forbid they pay more than $1.50 for a dozen eggs.
Made my own Berkey for half the cost. Two large stock pots and spigot from local feed store, and then purchased the Berkey filters from Berkey. The set-up is about the same capacity as the Berkey Grande. The most expensive part was buying the filters direct from Berkey (got 2 sets).
Feed and hay prices have just gone crazy, especially down here in Texas, with our drought. Last year, bermuda hay was $9/bale in the barn. Now, it's $13.50/bale. I mix in alfalfa pellets into my feed mix. A 50 lb bag is now $18.55. In Jan, it was $14.95. Henscratch was $12.05 in Jan. It's now $13.45. My hens are free-range, so luckily, they don't eat much scratch. Next year, I hope to be set up to raise meat chickens. Unfortunately, my garden didn't do well at all this year. Just starting my fall garden, and hope I have better luck with it. I have a water well, so I'm set there. I splurged and got a Generac generator, so if our crazy grid goes down, I'm covered. Need to check the level of propane, as a new storm is entering the GOM next week. Visions of Hurricane Rita keep going through my head. Sept 24, and 100 degrees. It's upper 90's here this week.
I understand my garden didn't do well, we been in TX now for 10 years now. Hoping to get us a tiny house in next few years, but we worried about losing on the the sell of our home, so we going to stay here, wish we could have some chickens but to many cats around here, they would hurt my birds, so maybe next year, but the cost of land, just need to watch and see
I Heard you...also south Tx....and my own water well...I treat "her" as if the Queen (King) in maintenance. Still keep 12 gals in the van and 12 gals in the house. Not to scare anyone but I learned in non drought times a back up is a good plan. Only me, 3 retired adopted Military Working Dogs and the last 13 yrs old AKC whippet. And we ALL need water. My garden is for one in 5 gal buckets...(Home Grown veg in the UK) has been my inspiration to give me the jump start to start small as I grow into my retirement date. I have learned through you and others...start small and grow into your ultimate dreams. Bless your family and your grandmother.
LOVE my Berkey! As for the hens, my small town doesn't allow them. I'm looking at a small parcel, the size of a regular town lot, in a teeny-tiny town near me (way cheaper than where I live) to plant an orchard, but they don't allow livestock of any kind. I had been looking at a larger parcel, about an acre, in the same small town - it's overrun with buckthorn and I wanted to bring goats in to clear the underbrush-size trees - NO GOATS, even rented for a day or two and gone again, NO LIVESTOCK!! That property had a creek running through it, but the field on the other side of the creek is conventionally farmed, so the water will contain ag chemical runoff. I'm retired, living on my own, with a few of the 'usual' health issues that come with age, vision problems that currently have a minor affect on my ability to drive...but what if my vision worsens and I can't drive at all? So I can't realistically buy a rural property (even if I could afford it). You have your family living on your property with you, but ask the older generation if it were just them, would they feel they could keep the place up by themselves? That's where I'm at - just me - an older woman with some health issues and limited finances. BUT I do have apple trees, a cherry tree, elderberry bush, currants, gooseberries, raspberries, grape vines, strawberry bed, asparagus bed, veg garden, rhubarb, starting to grow my own herbs...saving many of my own seeds...have a water bath canner, pressure canner, dehydrator, stand mixer, high-power blender, grain mill, freeze dryer...learning about herbal remedies, fermenting, how to increase production in a small space, etc. I'm doing what I can, where I'm at - but I wish I could live in the country.
Love my Berkey water filter! Bottom line, “they” hate when people decide to be self sufficient because “they” loose control. I have made it a personal mission the past two years to do a little bit at a time to become more self sufficient each day. I like to save my onion tops, bottoms, and peels along with the carrot peelings, parsley stems, and ends of the celery in a big freezer bag and throw it in the stock pot when I have enough chicken, turkey, or beef bones to make a big batch of stock.
For me it was a good year for basil. I just picked all my tomatoes..frost coming tonight. I cannot believe all the green tomatoes I have..trying to slowly ripen them we will see.
Zach, this video has got to be one of your best videos in a while. I'm on property with no creek or pond but does have a well. This video sent it home for me. Your talk today was said in such a way that it made my old rusty brain start to work again. Especially when you looked at the price of soda and compared it to water in a plastic bottle. Great great video. You "sent it home!!!"
I live in De. Lately the eggs my mom is buying at Walmart are so thin. My daughter and I both cracked several just gently trying to pick them up. And the price of everything is ridiculous
I was talking with someone I met on YT today. I said based on what I am seeing and hearing about what's happening in other parts, I believe we are better off here in Kentucky than people in other parts of the country.
Great video. We have an AlexaPure and love it..great tasting water and wish we would have got years ago. Also, waiting for the blueberry tea to be back in stock on etsy. God bless.
Thanks for the encouragement to the seekers. We are a couple in our 60s and we are just trying to get by. Our health created an issue with the acre we lived on in the mountains so we had to move. I really miss that place. We are on a lot now that is 100 x 50‘ and it’s paid for. We have converted a garage into our home. I’m going to ask the city how many chickens I can have. I’m trying to grow as much food as I can. The heat rather decimated us this year! I am finally getting tomatoes to set now that the temperatures have dropped a bit. I just hope I have enough time for them to start to ripen. I’ll watch the temperatures and pull everything in when it’s green let it turn red. I did that last year and dehydrated everything as it turned red and ground up into tomato powder. I love your channel. I would love to see the animals a little more. God bless you folks!
for onions and avoiding tears I place a damp rag by the onions when I cut them and no more tears. Depending on how many onions you have you might have to rinse the towel out if you start tearing up again but it works like a charm
You all have played a huge part in how I have been learning to prepare by canning and preserving food. I am learning more and more and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you all!!! Keep doing what you’re doing!!
Our one little rural grocery store, in Western Kentucky has never fully restocked from the 2 week clean out at the start of covid, The are finally getting better at spreading things out and hiding empty spots.
We live on a farm in Northern Iowa. In a town right close to us there are 250 people. They are NOT allowed to have chickens in town. Not one or one hundred. Can you imagine??? I had trouble believing it when a friend told me. I checked it out and sure enough they are not allowed. The town is Renwick, Iowa.
I noticed this when at the grocery store last week! Something is wrong when a case of soda costs less than two pounds of butter. Not just a dollar less, but the price of the butter was almost twice as much as the case of soda. And in Pennsylvania, a gallon of milk is just about $5 now. It's insane.
Great video thanks for sharing. I live in Atlantic Canada and the prices here are so high! A 3lb bag of apples cost $9.99, a bag of grapes cost about $12, a dozen eggs is $4.69, a loaf of bread is $4.89, a case of water is $5.69. People can not afford to eat, minimum wage is $12.75. And gas prices are through the roof! I am grateful that I live in the country and have a garden to try and beat some of these ridiculous prices
I'm in Frederick County Maryland, only about 20 minutes from Mt. Airy. Everything is outrageously high here in Maryland. It's crazy. Gas was almost $5.00 here. Now it's around $3.50.
Zak, all you have to do is fill up jugs with your berkey water. And then just take it with you and use glasses you already have. That's what we just did when we went to see my sister in Washington.
Two flats of water here is $14. 48 little 500ml bottles of water. 4L jug of water is anywhere from $2 - $6. Pepsi cans two 12 pack cases $15.45 . Eggs here from a farmer is anywhere from $4.00 - $6.00 . 25kg bag of chicken feed is $26 CANADA on the east coast.
I save the onion trimmings (skins, washed roots and tops), the heels of my celery, carrot peels, and any non cruciferous veg in freezer bags. When I have 3 or 4 bags I make veggie broth and condense that gallon and a half down to a quart jar either for canning or freeze in cubes for a cuppa broth on cold days.
I live in central Missouri. Three times a year we have a pigeon swap, this year the chickens were going for $25.00 each. Last year they were $8.00 each. It's all getting crazy.
Because of you guys, I raised my own tomatoes and peppers this summer. At times I didn't feel like it was worth it, but in the end, it really was. I live in the city in a townhouse that is paid for. I can't move at this point in my life, but I still drink the tap water (prob should get a Berkey) and next year, I plan to grow even more things in my patio garden. I just bought over $50 in groceries, that fit in two small bags and did not include any meats at all. Hopefully next year, I will only be buying meat and growing everything else! Thank you for the encouragement.
I started out small coffee grounds container and put in basil, thyme, oregano in each. Amazing what I've grown in totes this year. You can put sweet potatos, peppers, tomatoes etc in totes. I leave them right outside back door, full sun. I drill hole 7" up 10 holes around so totes always has water but can drain incase of rain. Just an idea for you.
I'm building a home on 3.4 acres of land my late husband and I purchased. I have a creek with plenty of water running in it. I never realized what a blessing that was til I watched this video. 💗
I live in a condo and do have a fairly decent (but small) area I use to grow veggies each summer. HOA association tried to give me some BS about "all my garden areas) (trellises, etc) but I called them out and pointed out all the people growing flowers everywhere and flat asked them so I can't grow food but people can grow all the flowers they want? They have backed off at least for the time being. They definitely don't allow chickens although Louisville my city, does allow for backyard chickens. However, I can live with that. I get my eggs from a farmers' market. They were charging $4 a dozen for pasture raised eggs but now have gone up to $5.50 a dozen. I can live with that though because I'd rather pay a little more and support local farmers. I used to also be a member of that market as I sold vintage items, glassware, tools, etc for 3 years and know and love all the vendors there. If I lived closer to you guys, I would definitely purchase eggs from you but being in Louisville, it would not be practical lol.
Just a suggestion on the bottle water. I have been taking my Berkey with me on vacation. I have their glass bottles that can be filled from the Berkey or you could use those plastic bottles and reuse them by filling them with the Berkey.
I bought ceramic filters and created my “berkey ” type filtration system with two food grade buckets and a spigot. When traveling, take the life straws
Great Video! We are in Va. We prep as well. We have cows, chickens, goats, and meat rabbits and can everything! I noticed at Walmart Dr Pepper 24 pack of 12 ounce cans are $11.48. It's crazy!
We bought our 100+ yr old farmhouse going on 10 years ago...she sits on 4-1/2 acres of pasture with black Walnut trees near the spring fed pond. Sounds ideal, eh? Drawbacks are the house required a heavy remodel and we were provided false info on termite status prior to our closing when we bought. We have been remodeling the better part of the nearly 10 years, old houses settle and crumble as the foundation. It'll be ongoing but we accept that. Our beautiful spring fed pond is shared by neighboring cattle, they swim in it regularly which fish and turtles and wildlife appreciate. I want a Berkey but they're so dang expensive! Think that'll be my Christmas request. We have pasture for livestock, but I need to get my passions straight, I want to live nomad life and animals don't work well for traveling! My heart is split with homesteading. I'd love to go all out utilizing our properties resources to sustain us. True roadblock, hubs isn't on board with either!!! I live vicariously between the two lifestyles through You Tubers...and do the smaller parts I'm able.
i'm in vancouver, wa. walmart here has purified water, 40 bottles, 16.9 fl oz, great value brand for $5.36. spring water is hard to get now. and that is expensive. i looked into a berkey filter system but it is too expensive for me.
I believe you were between Baltimore and DC or the eastern shore. Prices are always higher there. We are in central Maryland just south of Gettysburg Pa. Water at Aldi's is $3.29 for 24 bottles, that is almost double.
Yikes!!! 24oz water (great value) here in CA is just under 4.00, not counting CA redemption fee. 10.00 IS INSANE! We have a Berkey and laying hens! Feeling so thankful for our simple lil urban farm.
Wonderful. Thanks for this perspective, totally makes sense. We have our own eggs, garden and animals and work to limit our times at the grocery store. We're thankful we worked hard to be able to do that.
I’m on Long Island- paid 11$ for 3 28 bottle packs of water on sale last week. Eggs were $4 dozen for jumbo size, used to be 3/$10. It’s getting harder to pay for groceries these days! I’d love me a few hens, not permitted where I live!
I'm supprised in America they don't support more rain water tanks for rain collection household use. In Australia thats all there is in rural areas. Water catchment off the roofline of sheds or houses. There filted and used for drinking, cooking. Showering and toilet use is from Creeks, Dams, Chanels.
Meijer Super Store,in our tourist town of about 10,000 people along Western Michigan's Gold Coast, now has only ALL SELF CHECKOUTS! I looked at few cashier aisles left, none of them open. The self checkouts seemed to be positioned along an elongated U with an opening about half way across bottom. Personnel at opening of maze type setup that had bars corraling customers through line, like Disney has. Then another staff member at end of process. People seemed lost not knowing personal space or something. When done checking out, there were people bumping into one another, or just standing like statues, or clumped with people in their group getting clogged up with other clumps. A mess. Maybe kinks worked out now but I sure am not fond of the arrangement.
Zack, I really hope you will continue to always tell it like is. Please don't hold anything back. This is stuff everyone needs to know. Thank you so much. We have a filtration system but yet we still buy bottles. From now on I will get myself a water bottle for work. Thank you so much.
Zach I’m 65 I’m not going to be leaving my home during any problem. I don’t have much property. It will all be container growing. I would love to have a place to go to that you talk of. So I’m trying to come up with the things that I can to make things work here. I have a few questions. How are you and Jenn going to do laundry with no power. What about water storage? You have food storage, what about the other things that you will need in life. I have little to no money to do anything. Social security doesn’t go very far. These concerns are from my heart. I need help. 💜💜
We installed an in sink water filter this summer and filters on our shower heads last year. The water in our area smells like a pool and dries out everyone in the house. We've been aware of the food issues for years now. It's hard trying to get healthy food in an area where hobby farms are only for the rich but we're doing what we can. Thank you for putting out the excellent advice on water sources and health! People need to hear this information!
Boy you are right on! It's nuts! We have property and been here for 49 years and are on well water and have plenty of space for some chickens. That will be next on the list come spring as we are headed into winter and need a place for them. I am excited to be able to have our own eggs and wishing I had a dehydrator nor so I could use that and stock up on things. Great video and grant rant and boy do I understand!!! Take care and stay blessed.
I have chickens, and I've been feeding them organic feed. With the price of chicken feed going up and the bags getting smaller I don't know what I'm going to do soon. Thankfully I have a garden to offset the feed, but not for much longer.🥺
Hay prices raised for us end of 2020 and then the freeze came leaving everyone without power with the whole "grid" issues. We lost our hay field that year and it was crazy! Farming and Agriculture has definitely taken a hit. Prayers and blessings your way
Berkeys are over $300. That's hard for alot of people. I do have one, but I started with a zero water filter pitcher and it works great. It was around $30. I don't buy bottled water either. I'm not doing chickens, but I don't have to have eggs. :)
You guys are so awesome with what you share! They say repetition is good for the soul! Like the way you deliver bad news Zach! Tell Jen Ty too! ❤🙏🏼✌🏻❤️
Zach, I was almost in tears when I shopped for basics with an elder. She hadn't been in a store in months. She has enough, but wanted a case of water, she didn't get it. I agree with the chemical idea.
Lol my sister and I fed a bowl of dirt to our little sister once . We told her it was good for her ( parents weren't home). She didn't get sick or anything thank goodness 😅
Yeah, my beans (both kinds) are now in the pod-drying stage. Sumner garden is done. I adore zinnias, too. My must-grow every year. We got a Berkey ten years ago. One of our best investments. And...you are correct on the base causes of this debacle.
Even in the country they are regulating what we can raise. House interest stupid high. So many people are stuck. We are looking to buy property in the spring but it took us 60 yrs to get here.
I ahve had my Berkey for 5 years...love it..plus a lifestraw in case on travelling...so many city and town regulations here in Canada make it so that we can't have chickens.
We still use the drug store across town and the gas station beside it gas was 3.00.We turned in to our house and the gas station within walking distance it was 3.00 and we had a good laugh. The next day the gas station next to us gas was 3.29. It's Crazy.
Bird Flu had caused a lot of Turkey and Chicken barns to be put down here in our area (NC Wisconsin). I am told this is the reason for the high egg, chick and turkey prices. I'm not sure what is going on in your area. I am grateful to have my own chickens for eggs, and meat if needed!

Need to check the level of propane, as a new storm is entering the GOM next week. Visions of Hurricane Rita keep going through my head. Sept 24, and 100 degrees. It's upper 90's here this week.
I understand my garden didn't do well, we been in TX now for 10 years now. Hoping to get us a tiny house in next few years, but we worried about losing on the the sell of our home, so we going to stay here, wish we could have some chickens but to many cats around here, they would hurt my birds, so maybe next year, but the cost of land, just need to watch and see
Here in Dewey Arizona I have been paying $20+ for burmuda for over a year
89 u66.
I use onion peels in my broth, gives it great color and flavor
I am contemplating buying an acreage in southern KY, Lincoln county, no water source though. Will be looking at it this weekend.
It’s the same over here in Europe too, keep repeating your message, you can’t help too many people
Zak, all you have to do is fill up jugs with your berkey water. And then just take it with you and use glasses you already have. That's what we just did when we went to see my sister in Washington.
I agree Mr. Stiver! Enjoyed your teaching, keep doing it. Much Blessings
Here in Las Vegas eggs at Smith’s (Kroger) 1 dz is $3.29, 18ct is $5.69 and 60 ct is $11.55. A few months ago I paid $19 and change for 60 ct eggs.
Soda up here is 8.99 plus deposit for a 12 pack, water is 3.00 24 for generic
I haven't been into a real grocery store in FLOREVER. I don't miss it! 😬
We planted lots of opal basil this year! Purple pesto for us! 🤩
I have been looking at something like a berkey but my goodness those filters are so expensive! are these ceramic filters more affordable?
I live 45 minutes away from Melissa and Tyler. Eggs at food line in Berkley springs wv are $5.98 per dozen.
Gave my hubby a travel Berkey for his birthday this year. Best thing ever!
We have a stainless steel water jugs. We fill them from our well when we travel.
Zach- they are not allowed to have a Berkey in California. I’ve heard this several times
I believe you were between Baltimore and DC or the eastern shore. Prices are always higher there. We are in central Maryland just south of Gettysburg Pa. Water at Aldi's is $3.29 for 24 bottles, that is almost double.
Even at RK a case of their spring water has gone from $1.49 to $2.69 and that's a good price compared to grocery stores.
Here in North Central Arkansas a bag of potatoes is NINE DOLLARS! 3 months ago they were around 5 dollars.
You should also check out all the food Processing plants that have caught on fire in the past year is now been up to 100
Zack, I really hope you will continue to always tell it like is.
Just bought a case of spring water for 2.99 and a case of coke zero for 12.99, so I think it might depend....? I'm in Northern Indiana
Your garden is beautiful!!!
You can even make your own Berkey/Alexa Pure water filtration. All you have to buy that cost more is the filter that goes inside
yep. Fixing to set up a composting system in my chicken coop area. hugs. I hate bottled water. god bless, Deborah.
Prayers and blessings your way
wOOD FOR MY WOOD BUNER FIRE PIT IS NO LONGER AT $19.99 NOW $26.00 AT SAMS CLUB AND COSTCO IS $29.99! CRAZY PRICES!
Thanks for all of the information!!!! Love your videos!
Well, a 24pk of soda in Eldon MO was $14.99 tonight. Of course I didn't buy it and I have NEVER bought water.
I have an osmosis system under my sink for pure water . It has 4 filters.
Berkey will not ship to California. Bummer
Berkeys are over $300. That's hard for alot of people. I do have one, but I started with a zero water filter pitcher and it works great. It was around $30. I don't buy bottled water either. I'm not doing chickens, but I don't have to have eggs. :)
Thank God I have chickens. I live in CA and yes I buy bottled alkaline water at 5.99 for 24 bottles. How sad that it's 10.00 back east
You guys are so awesome with what you share! They say repetition is good for the soul! Like the way you deliver bad news Zach! Tell Jen Ty too! ❤🙏🏼✌🏻❤️
Great info. Thanks😊 Regina
You can get a travel Berkey, they are small.👍
That's crazy. Water bottles here about $4 for a case. Sounds like Maryland is price gouging.
So true!!! Potatoes in Ohio are over $10 for 10 lbs. Crazy!!! Working on getting outside our village so we can get chickens. God bless.
Zach, I was almost in tears when I shopped for basics with an elder. She hadn't been in a store in months. She has enough, but wanted a case of water, she didn't get it. I agree with the chemical idea.
That’s crazy. I just bought a 36 pack of water today for 389. I’m in Pennsylvania. That is just awful. 10 dollars. What the heck.
Heya yes the prices are going up even here in my country it's just crazy
Lol my sister and I fed a bowl of dirt to our little sister once . We told her it was good for her ( parents weren't home). She didn't get sick or anything thank goodness 😅
Yeah, my beans (both kinds) are now in the pod-drying stage. Sumner garden is done.
I adore zinnias, too. My must-grow every year.
We got a Berkey ten years ago. One of our best investments.
And...you are correct on the base causes of this debacle.
I have a Berkey for when the 💩 hits fan. I would be able go down to the creek and get water or from rain barrels.
Love your rants! Keep ‘‘em coming.
I went to the farm and art market last week and she wanted 7.00 a dozen for eggs
I freeze dry a lot of my herbs and they turn out so good. By far my favorite way to do.
We still use the drug store across town and the gas station beside it gas was 3.00.We turned in to our house and the gas station within walking distance it was 3.00 and we had a good laugh. The next day the gas station next to us gas was 3.29. It's Crazy.
To many regulations that Berkey doesn't sell in California
I put my onion skins in the freezer until i make my bone broth. They give a really reach color and more flavor to the broth. Thanks for all you do !
Our eggs for large are 6.97 for 36 eggs.
Any produce I put back in the ground when it is old and not used.
Heya, the inflation here in my country is crazy never seen such numers
