It is really nice of you to make a video like this, and I hope the boy will get a lot of enjoyment out of his new hobby :) I totally agree on the point that learning something requiring fine motor skills like carving, playing the violin or filigree takes ALOT of time and effort to get good at. For the record, I am not good at any of the above, but i truly enjoy watching people like you, Gene Messer who are. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you, Gene, for the beginner video with great information on the bass wood and knives and the importance of sharpening. I will have him watch this video with me. I know he would love a knife to get started. I will message you on Facebook. Thanks again and God bless!
Hey Mr. Messer! New subscriber here!! Thank you so much for this video! My 10 year old son recently received his whittling chip through the cub scouts and is very excited to start carving! This video is a GREAT help!! Thanks again!!
Excellent advice Gene. I taught my kids to chop up veggies so that way I didn't have to get stressed out so much because I trusted them with knives. U know exactly what ur talking about. The mom needs to learn to whittle to teach her kid.
Great video sir, and super information. I am just learning and the information you gave us is very helpful. I have been looking for something to protect the blades, now I know what to use. Thank you very much and love watching your videos.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it was helpful. I thought a "stop" cut was something completely different, used to stop the knife at a particular spot.
I didn't understand what you meant when you mentioned once or twice that you make blades out of "otc blades" . Do you mean you buy carving blades and reshape them or change the profile or do you mean some other kind of blade that you reshape into a carving knife? Also if you haven't shown how to use your leather belt sander to strop a carving knife could you do a video on how to do it well. I'll understand if you don't want to but I really do enjoy your videos an think it would really help us beginners.
