Soil looks extremely dense, firm, and lifeless..needs a super deep, large tine core aerate and filled with quality soil/compost mix with maybe 10-20% course sand mixed in

Today is 20 March 2024 which is the Autumn equinox in Australia. From tomorrow onwards the nights become longer than the days, which means less and less sunlight hours for your lawn to recover. If you can get it fully healed before winter it will be impressive! Good luck 🥳👍

Hey being a farmer in nz when i look at you soil it looks dry, lifeless and low in carbon. Adding sand for your top dress is counterproductive as it holds no water or nutrients. Id advise making up a mix of peat moss and humate (not humic acid on its own, humate is 30% carbon so basically super compressed compost) this will hold a significant amounts of water and nutrients and will increase you soils (or dirt in you case) CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) google this) sand has its place for leveling soil but this mix will feed you soil give the microbes a place to start. Doing this for the next 5 years will give you an easier/lower input soil that yields the results you are after. Altering you soil health is not an overnight process but in time will completely change what you are working with. You will see results after the first topdress and a core aerate.

Appreciate you sharing your knowledge mate! My soil test came back showing that organic matter was in a healthy range so I was encouraged by that. Unfortunately had to use up some remaining sand this past week on the front lawn haha but we'll see how it tracks along and I'll look into straight humate. Cheers!

From my background of traveling between Oz and Taiwan in two completely different industry's and my own prototype garden I was really happy to say what I did. The OG comment was on point.
When I'm in Taiwan on a strawberry farm it's all about soil biology to nth degree. When I'm in my own veggie garden here in Melbourne where you are from (blame google for hurling me your way) I do the same.
I have my own problems with kikyu on my nature strip. I have trees tapped into the soil.

Do you have a grooming attachemnt on the mow master? i wonder if consistent like monthly grooming might help the front lawn especially in the summer times. ive heard its good to groom kik to keep it healthy and keep the thatch and runners down.

Hey mate I'm pretty sure pre-emergent slows recovery time and ability to spread to bare spots.
With existing rhizomes in Kik I don't necesarily think that's true because Spartan essentially prevents new roots from shooting down
Kill it off and plant tall fescue? No one in aus does tall fescue

Just use granular sulphur to lower the ph, not the sulphate of ammonia then you don't have to worry about burn and crazy N
