Years earlier, in 1936 under the Japanese colony, when Sohn Kee-chung won the gold medal in the marathon at Berlin Olympics, the whole nation cried for joy. Sohn, at the award ceremony, under the Japanese name Son Kitai, and under the Japanese flag, covered the shameful Rising Sun on his uniform with the bay leaves in his hands while the Japanese national anthem was playing, It was so sad that that made them cry too.
After the independence, Sohn Kee-jung trained Suh Yun-bok, who won gold medal at 1947 Boston Maraton. He then continued his training for Ham Kee-yong, Sohn Yun-gil and Choi Yun-chil, and they all won (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) at 1950 Boston Marathon.

Ham won the Boston Marathon on April 19, 1950. He was crowned a spectacular hero. But, Korea that returned from the tournament was already in ruins due to the Korean War. Instead of colorful parades and cheers, tank wheels and shots greeted him. The return country was already the site of hell, and Ham Ki-yong also had to go on an evacuation path to save his life. He eventually took refuge with the glorious Boston Marathon winning medal buried in the ground near Seoul, and never recovered the gold medal again. In 2007, the Boston Marathon Organizing Committee re-produced and awarded the same medal as the lost.
