Expansion of steam fragment the surrounding rock, the volcano then spews out steam along with a mixture of rocks, ash, water, and other volcanic materials. This is the reason Phreatic eruption are also called steam-blast eruption phreatic eruption are different in that they are rarely accompanied by magma. They are also relatively weaker compared to other types of eruption but phreatic eruption still have to be carefully monitored since they often serve as precursors to further volcanic activity.
