11:23 - This trivia fact is practically a meme at this point, but: during this take, the actor playing Aragorn kicked the helmet so hard that he broke his toe, and his scream is real pain, and that's the take that's in the movie.

The translation of Professor Tolkien’s Kingdom of Rohan from book to the screen was masterful. The portrayals of King Theoden by Bernard Hill, Eowyn by Miranda Otto, Eomer by Karl Urban and, not least, the balefully malevolent plotting Grima Wormtongue by Brad Dourif substantially matched the personalities of those characters in the mind’s eye of one who has been a Tolkien fan since 1965.

    • @NigelIncubatorJones
      @NigelIncubatorJones ปีที่แล้ว +8

Mostlly, yes. But despite Dourif being a great actor and delivering a great performance for what he was asked to do, it still was a poor interpretation of Grima. They made him visually repulsive in a way that makes your skin crawl. Such a person would never rise to the position of the King's chief counselor. Wormtongue really means 'speaks like a dragon' because worm=dragon in Tolkien, and dragons were famous for being very clever. The character would have been better had he been more like Hans Gruber in Die Hard--that's someone that you can at least understand why people would follow him, because he's obviously brilliant and has a certain charisma.

King Theoden is my favourite character in the films. I honestly think he gets the best lines and I empathise with his character's decisions more than any others, considering the responsibility of protecting his people.

  • @Makkaru112
    @Makkaru112 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Aragorn spared Grima for pragmatic, political & moral reasons. Morally: Killing someone is bad. Even when perceived as justified Tolkien didn't feel that taking a life was ever the honourable thing to do.
Pragmatically: Grima might have knowledge about Saruman's plans.
Maybe even some of Sauron's plans.
Information that they could have extracted from him if he'd accepted the king's 'mercy'.
Politically: You've not seen your king in months. Rumour has it he's gone mad and that Grima is the one running the kingdom now. Next time you see your king he's flinging Grima down the stairs unarmed, about to swing a sword through his head. Grima was even begging for mercy. That's not a good look for Theoden's first act as the King again after being silent for so long.

And the Three Dudes chasing the Orcs across Rohan was filmed just a few days after Viggo broke his toe, so you had Aragorn with a broken toe, Legolas with a cracked rib (Orlando Bloom had fallen off his horse), and Gimli with a dislocated knee (John Rhys-Davies's scale double, Brett Beattie)--professionals all! Gollum may have been a bit of a drama queen about starving, but he wasn't faking when he said the elven rope burned him. After having been under the corrupting, evil influence of the Ring for as long as he was (500 years) anything made by the elves, as noble, pure and good as they are, would cause him literal pain. This is why he complains about the elven bread later on as well. To him it would taste like ash.
As for the bread, it's not that it's not delicious. At this point it's just the only thing Frodo and Sam have been eating for a good week or so. They're just bored with eating the same thing over and over.

The ring that Aragorn wears, the Ring of Barahir, is not magical but it is unbelievably ancient. It was not made by men but by the elves when they dwelt over the sea in the immortal lands of the Valar, the angelic powers who shaped and govern the world under the one god, Eru. When the elves returned to Middle Earth many thousands of years ago to fight the original dark lord, Morgoth (Sauron’s master and also the master of the Balrogs), Barahir, the leader of one of the groups of men who allied with and served the elves, saved the life of one of the greatest elven princes, Finrod (who was the eldest brother of Galadriel, a great princess herself). In gratitude Finrod gave Barahir his ring as a sigh of his eternal friendship and aid. Aragorn is a descendant of Barahir, and the ring is a token of his legitimacy as king.

The Two Towers is my favorite of the movies simply because it really is Gandalf's movie to shine. To those who haven't read the book prior its the first time you get a sense of Gandalf living a sort of double life. He is one of the most powerful things in middle earth bar Sauron yet is VERY carful about showing it; choosing to do magic in very subtle ways that even the reader or viewer can miss.
I also love the part where he says the prayer in Rohirrim. Its one of those little scenes that gives you a sense of just how deep Gandalf goes in Middle Earth.

All three movies can be thought of as "one film" in three parts, as the original story is also one lone story but published in three parts for economic reasons but a few scenes re-set the story and themes in each movie since they were each released one year apart. Imagine having to wait a year for the cliffhanger, even having read the book!

The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior; nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup, nor good hawk swing through the hall, nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard. An evil death has set forth the noble warrior
A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld

on Meduselde thæt he ma no wære
his dryhtne dyrest and maga deorost.
Éowyn is only heard singing the last four lines of the song, ending with the word Bealo, which in Old English meant "evil" or "harm". The first of those lines ("Bealocwealm hafað...") originates from the epic poem Beowulf, line 2265.)

Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves)
    Gandalf The Grey/White
Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful.
However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing.
Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”
Galadriel herself not only witnessed this but as a student of Aulë and the other Valar she obviously had involvement in helping create the hallowed objects that housed the final flower of the silver tree Telperion that was the father of the moon and the mother of the sun was Laurëlin the golden tree and prior to the sun and moon they too used to wax and wane!

Enjoying your reactions! Peter Jackson & Co.'s version of the Dead Marshes is a good try, but it doesn't work as well as it might. For starters, in the book the passage of the marshes was done in total darkness, as Gollum wouldn't move even by moonlight. The strange gas flares are meant to be the "will-o-the-wisp," a faint phosphorescent glow sometimes reported from swamps and marshes, interpreted by Gollum and others as candles carried by the dead. It's easy to see why the movie-makers wouldn't present a major part of the story in total black screen. Incidentally, thought was given to filming this part in a real marsh, but the logistics got too tough. So these scenes were filmed in a flooded parking lot near the Weta studio (the same parking lot was also used to film the water in front of the Moria gate in FOTR, complete with Watcher in the Water). Lots of green screens for the backdrops.

I can say from watching your reaction so far that YOU will love the books. The movies are like a good burger with home fries and a shake. The books are like fillet mignon with sauteed mushrooms and a fine wine. Then there's The Legendarium. An endless soup, salad and dessert bar that Tolkien worked to perfect from when he was a very young man in the trenches of WWI, until his death in the 1970s. Start with The Hobbit which he wrote for his children in the 1930s ( quick, easy read told from Bilbo's POV ). Then the Trilogy. It's funny because the first time I reaad it I felt like every road, river and ruin the Hobbits passed had its own story. This was in 1976. It was years before I found out my feelings were completely true.
The Silmarillian and other tales can be ponderous reading but lucky you! There are plenty of TH-cam channels to help you break things down. My favorites are Tolkien Untangled, TheGirlNextGondor and the Red Book. This endless feast is always there when you're ready for it,
Think you are gonna love the trilogy particularly because almost every chapter has a song or poem in it. Bon appetit!

The little box of Sam's that Frodo catches is not seasoning. It's a reference to the end of the book that Jackson left out of the movies It's a Mallorn seed and essentially magical dust from Lothlorian given to Sam by Galadriel. At the end of the book Sam plants the seed where Bilbo's party tree had been cut down and it grows into the only giant Mallorn tree west of Lothlorian (the giant trees the elves live in) and he sprinkles the dust around the shire and replants many trees. This results in the very best harvest in the history of the shire. In some ways it's Galadrial using effectively the last magic of her ring to bless the Shire (the elven rings lose their powers when the one ring is destroyed). Everything harvested that year (1420) is so good that it becomes a byword for describing things that are excellent and good. "Proper 1420 that was"

"Three hundred lives of men I have walked this Earth." Actually, Gandalf is far older than that. He, and other angels known as the Ainur, helped Eru Ilúvatar (God, if you will) create the universe some forty thousand years ago (if I'm not mistaken). He's referring to just the time he has been in Middle Earth.

According to Treebeard, the Wizards first appeared "after the Great Ships came over the Sea," which would mean about the time of the great battle in the Prologue to FOTR. That would be at the end of the Second Age, about 3000 years before our story. In Tolkien's account of the history of the Third Age, given in an Appendix to ROTK, it is stated that the Wizards appeared about a thousand years into the Third Age, which would be about 2000 years before our story. Take your pick...

That right there kinda sounds naughty already, lol), haha! And your getting choked up on seeing Gandalf's return. Lookin' forward to more such as you continue watching!

Thank you for appreciating the laugh, the pacing of that joke was so week delivered. I actually was egged on for months to watch lord of the rings by a very good friend and fellow creator (BasicWitGirl) because of the legolas finger moment. So I was prepared for it and it was even BETTER in the moment and context if the film. Gawd damn 🤣 and Gandalf has such a sweet space in my heart. He is my kind of character: calm, direct, stern when needed and wise. I adore him.

I don’t know why they went with Gandalf saying he’s been around for “300 lives of men”. In the books he’s been in Middle Earth in old-man form for 2,000 years, which is more like 30 lives of men. Though fundamentally he’s an immortal angelic being created at the beginning of the Universe. Either way it doesn’t equal 300 lives of men 🧐

    • @cpmf2112
      @cpmf2112 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think it was based on the most common calculation of Middle Earth's age being about 11,000 years. Still not quite 300 lives of men in Tolkien's writing but they were trying to show it in our context.

(Rohan)The instrument you may be loving isn’t a violin! It’s a Nordic instrument called the Hardanger fiddle! (Norwegian: hardingfele) is a traditional stringed instrument considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood.
The F-holes of the Hardanger fiddle are distinctive, oftentimes with a more “sunken” appearance, and generally straighter edges (unlike the frilly, swirly F-holes of a violin). Four of the strings are strung and played like a violin, while the rest, named understrings or sympathetic strings, resonate under the influence of the other four. These extra strings are tuned and secured with extra pegs at the top of the scroll, effectively doubling the length of a Hardingfele scroll when compared to a violin.
The sympathetic strings, once fastened to their pegs, are funneled through a “hollow” constructed fingerboard, which is built differently than a violin’s, being slightly higher and thicker to allow for these extra strings. The resonant strings lay on the center of the special bridge, attached to extra hooks (or fine-tuners) on the tailpiece. Carved out within the center of the bridge is a smaller secondary “bridge”, or opening, designed specifically for these resonant strings to pass through. This is where the resonance is picked up & reverberated; as notes are played, the vibrations are sent through the bridge, where the sympathetics echo those notes.
    • The Hardingfele’s bridge is unique compared to other bowed instruments. It is somewhat taller and wider, resulting in the strings being slightly lower and farther apart; this allows for the easy execution of double-stops (playing of two strings at once). A similar technique is seen in some American old-time and bluegrass fiddlers, who intentionally move their bridge back a few millimetres closer to the tailpiece, for better double-stops.
The hardingfele is used mainly in the southwest part of Norway, whereas the ordinary violin (called flatfele, 'flat fiddle', or vanlig fele, 'common fiddle') is found elsewhere. The hardingfele is used for dancing, accompanied by rhythmic loud foot stomping. It was also traditional for the fiddler to lead the bridal procession to the church.
The instrument is often highly decorated, with a carved animal (usually a dragon or the Lion of Norway) or a carved woman's head as part of the scroll at the top of the pegbox, extensive mother of pearl inlay on the tailpiece and fingerboard, and black ink decorations called 'rosing' on the body of the instrument. Sometimes pieces of bone are used to decorate the pegs and the edges of the instrument.
The earliest known example of the hardingfele is from 1651, made by Ole Jonsen Jaastad in Hardanger, Norway. Originally, the instrument had a rounder, narrower body. Around the year 1850, the modern layout with a body much like the violin became the norm.

"300 lives of men..." I think that that line, and his resurrection, are the only times that the films reference Gandalf's true nature. Like Saruman and the Balrog, he's a Maiar, which in the mythology of Tolkien's books is the equivalent of an angel (or a demon in the Balrog's case). There are others who don't appear in these films (Radogast the Brown appears in The Hobbit). Sauron is an Ainur, more of an Archangel.

Some reactors get all hung up on the “I AM Saruman” line. It’s just a metaphor!! It’s even more apt when you consider a detail in the book, not shown in the movie. In his arrogance Saruman decides white is insufficient, and he declares himself Saruman of Many Colors, and dons a rainbow colored robe. He wears a pride flag! So Gandalf becomes the new white wizard.

    • @rikk319

Why not say he wears God's promise to never flood the Earth again, or Joseph's coat? Or maybe it has nothing to do with God's promise, Joseph's coat, or a pride flag, because Tolkien disliked metaphor? Saruman's choosing a robe of many colors was Tolkien's very blunt way of showing his arrogance and rejection of his original mission from the Valar.

Tolkien introduced Norse Mythology. Yet never made it to Iceland for a visit, even if he wanted to. Still, as we have already said, his works were inspired by Iceland, its stories and its language. For example, the trolls in The Hobbit are inspired by Icelandic folktales, and Gandalf is the incarnation of Ødin(Olòrin)
Gandalf (Gandálfr) is a Dvergr (Norse dwarf) in Norse mythology, appearing in the so-called 'Tally of the Dwarves' within the poem Völuspá from the Poetic Edda, as well as in the Prose Edda. The name derives from the Old Norse words gandr (magic staff) and álfr (elf), thus a protective spirit who wields a magical wand. (Gandalf is even Staff Elf in Rohirric language which is also old English Anglo Saxon
Even a lot of how the framework and design of most of his collected works all read and function in modes of SAGAs and Epics
Forgot the names of the dwarf’s equipment but Gandalf also had a magical ring and his sword was from the elvish king Turgon from long ago from a mythical hidden kingdom that was the heartbeat of the elves of middle earth outside of Eregion. Sword named Glamdring(Foehammer)
The difference is subtle where in the other story it’s a special spear of sorts and it’s the same thing with the steer Shadowfax connecting to Sleipnir

The smaller Orcs are members of two different groups, one that followed the Fellowship from Moria and one that came over the river from Mordor. The large Uruk-Hai are Saruman's and have orders to bring the Hobbits to him in Isengard. Spoiler: You will see two groups of Orcs later too. One from a watchtower and the other from 'the dead city'. These critters are bad enough with their own, but are even quicker to fight when they don't serve in the same location.
