I listened to all 3 pieces several times. I also listened to other performers. Is this the best painting of this on YT or I am enchanted and in a mood? God exists...

She brings something out of this that others don't. Typical Kate Liu! She's lost in it and yet has the chops to stay focused. Amazing...

Surprisingly enough, this is one of the best renditions of this piece on TH-cam, very transparent and modest. She's definitely not trying to show off

If anyone familiar with this piece was played the sound track of Liu's performance here in a blind-fold test and asked to guess which world-famous pianist had never performed it in public before, but was performing here, the plausible answers would include Richter, Horowitz, Gilels, Zimerman, Volodos, amongst others.
Try this test by listening to Lui without watching her. This is astounding music making by any measure, with no attempt to beat the clock, an iron grip on the structure, as subtle, gripping and as fresh an interpretation as you will find anywhere. Brava!!

I don't care about her mistakes, she has lived this experience! To me she can accurately portray the dread, uncertainty and exhilaration of this piece. Perlemuter is the only one that tops her in my mind and that is only because he had the whole picture down.

I think this is one of the only versions besides Pogorelich that truly capture the horror the music is trying to portray. A very clean version as well, bravo!

+Rachel Kwong Lovely! What a privilege to have found this page. Would be interesting to hear her play it now - not that it's possible to better perfection but then again all is possible is it not?! If you didn't see it check out her Ondin as well which is equally beautiful.

I get she's a prodigy and can play anything. But how can a 16 yo manage such sophisticated music? Pulling together all these episodes into a whole. The mad mood changes. The irony. Where does this come from in someone so young. Would love to hear her in Rachmanioff sonatas. Also, pieces that are hard to make sense of.

I couldn't agree more, how she performes this piece is unbelievable. Listen to her interpretation of the Dorman sonata. That's a good example of a piece that is hard to make sense of. I started loving it after hearing her play it, I even bought the score. At first I couldn't understand it at all but then it clicked.

Yikes! Kate was all of 16 when this was videotaped, Apparently there is a whole treasure trove of early Kate Liu videos here on TH-cam that have been sitting around for 5 years. Who knew a scant few years later she'd take 3rd prize in the Chopin? Some are uploaded by windyapplestudios and others are uploaded by TheMusicJoy, yet Kate doesn't seem to have her own channel here on TH-cam. I wonder why? No matter. These will soon have in the 100's of thousands of hits now that she is a household name in the music world.

+J Joe Townley Admittedly my friend that the media not always have the benefit of sharing what the performer or composer wants to show his presence. Anyway, it is obvious that after this international competition Frédéric Chopin; sent us by their presence excellence that one does not know I'm confident that in the coming years we will be surprised by other young talents who excel with the power of our great performers and composers such as Vladimir Horowitz and well others I see that your analysis is good. Personally I find this magical performer with interest; Kate Liu; it there in its technical and musical abilities terrible interest that I am convinced will propel the future in numerous concerts and recitals throughout the world as George Li and others excellence is down the road.

+lepaintre123 So true, Jacques. I've commented elsewhere on TH-cam that there are so many young talented pianists trying to break out in the music world. Most will never have the good fortune to win a major competition prize and put their careers in fourth gear like Kate has. This doesn't diminish Kate's abilities, which are formidable, but she'd be the first to agree that in winning the Chopin prize fate has handed her on a plate a gift from the musical gods. She now leaps ahead of thousands of hopefuls and into that rare crowd of elite concert pianists who can attract considerable attention whenever their name appears in the limelight. I once heard someone say, "Today, a female pianist needs three things to be a success: talent, a major prize and beauty. A male needs only two of those." Kate has all three.

+J Joe Townley I suspect this long-abandoned channel either was kate's or her family's -- it contains only the 3 vids of this piece, and in the comments after another of the vids, somebody directly addresses 'music joy' about having kate play (years ago), and she answers back.

Debussy e Ravel hanno contribuito ad azzerare il sistema armonico affidando alla musica il compito di creare impressioni e atmosfere vanificando quasi il valore di una linea melodica attraente espressiva fantastica eloquente anche se non sempre sentimentale.
