    One of my childhood friends lost their hearing a while back, and I've been learning sign language to communicate. I wasn't sure if they got heating aids or not, but, I always wanted to know how they worked. Thank you for making this video to help me understand.

    Where can I read a technical explanation of the signal processing involved in hearing aids, including the number and the characteristics of the frequency channels, how volume compression is done, and so on?

    Thanks for the great video. It greatly helped with today's audiologist appointment. She was able to explain, with the help of this video, the new adjustments she needed to make in the higher frequencies because of my hearing change. Also I insisted in having the real ear measurement test. Thanks for that too. To her surprise, I was not getting enough gain even after her adjustments. Thanks to another one of your videos, I asked about custom ear mold and that is what we are doing.
    I have been wearing Widex Beyond in both ears for about two years.
    I still do not fully understand about loss of word comprehension. I thought it would improve with the increase in gain at the frequencies I needed. In your video, you say "will still have difficulty understanding speech". I always thought it was the brain missing the sounds that caused the trouble with understanding speech. What does cause the brain to have trouble with speech, if it is not the missing sounds?
    Thanks again for all the great videos. You should open an office on the East Coast.

      Hi David, speech understanding from hearing loss caused by damaged Outer Hair Cells can be restored to a degree. However, speech understanding for damage to the Inner Hair Cells cannot be restored. We determine this by testing Word Recognition Scores during your initial hearing evaluation.

    Love your videos... just came back from my AuD and we updated hearing test (flat 65-70 db loss both ears). Your video at the end states that if word recognition is low percentage, then even with aids fitted properly (REM) it will continue to be hard to understand language (my word recognition was about 68 - 70%). Considering the Starkey ITC Picasso to replace my older Starkey aids - anatomy doesn't accommodate the BTE aids. Have you reviewed this model (came out in August 2018, I think?). Thanks.

      Hi Ron, I have fit some Picassos. They are good aids. I haven't done a comprehensive review on them though.

    Amused by the letters used from the 4khz to 8khz range hearing loss in the audiogram. "F*** Th*s". Maybe a little puerile, but displays a glimpse of my frustration with hearing loss all the same. Light in dark places e.t.c

    I read that prolonged exposure to sound levels above 85 db can cause hearing damage.
    If I have a loss of 80 db at a particular frequency, then how can the hearing aid amplify that frequency without quickly exceeding the damage threshold?
    For example: Voice at 60 to 70 dB being amplified by 15db would expose my ear to 75 to 85 db. Given a loss of 80 db, then I would perceive -5 to 5 db. Given a wisper is 20 to 30 db, I would expect this would not help much.
    Move importantly, traffic at 70 to 85db would be 85 to 100 db, well beyond the damage level.
    So do hearing aid amplify even more than this, thus causing more damage?

    Is hearing aids helping pts with hearing lose associated with optic atrophy

  • @TiffanyHumes

    Question for you Dr. Cliff - I just went in and had a hearing test done. The audiologist showed me my hearing test graph. My left ear is basically with in “normal range” where my right ear was basically the opposite of the graph you showed. After she was done with the test she stated that I should go see a ENT doctor because this type of loss is indicated by something going on in the middle ear where the bones are.
    With all that said, I do have a genetic condition named Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome. It effects the collagen in the body and all of the joints. I’m curious on your thoughts.
    Thank you in advance for your response.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your Audiologist identified a low frequency conductive hearing loss. Depending on the severity of the loss your ENT may recommend a surgical procedure to address the conductive component caused by the middle ear bones. Otherwise, a Bone Anchored Hearing Device or Hearing Aid may be the best treatment option.

    I am from TN but I really like your videos, would it be “hard” for you to be my audiologist if I’m willing to travel or do you think local is better?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Julia. I do have patients who travel from out of state to see me. Most of them find a local provider to handle minor issues that come up which don't justify long distance travel. With the advent of remote adjustments, it has created the possibility of hearing aid adjustments anywhere.

    Why are hearing aids still so expensive? I heard there were supposed to be something coming down the pipeline in the US that is going to make them much cheaper, like you aren't going to have to special order them anymore I can't remember. Any insight?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My insight is that the OTC legislation will largely regulate what is currently available online and most consumers will be underwhelmed by the innovation in the space. However, there will be some companies who make cheap products who try to "cash in". That being said, there will always be expensive devices, cheap devices, and everything in between.

      Quite frankly. You'll have to demand it. If they refuse to do it for whatever reason they fabricate, then find a private provider who will perform them on your hearing aids.
