  • Applying Thompson Water Seal to a 10 day old Fence . Seen a lot of bad reviews on this product ,but I have had nothing but success with it . I think a lot of the reviews come from the stain in one , but the clear water based product has always been successful for me for going on 10 years plus. Apply heavy and results will speak for themselves. Legacy Fence out of Kennedale ,Tx.

    its a great product but a little bit expensive fo someone with a big fence. Personally I use cooking oil from sams, $17 for 5 gallons(contains a lot of petroleum chemicals anyways which is bad for your health)just to seal natural color wood incase you want to add some stained color just buy a pint at homed depot and add it, it works great for me. My fence is almost ten years and looks brand new.

    Always remember to fill your sprayer with clean water, hand pump up to pressure, and let it purge out the sealant residue after every use! Keeps the tip from clogging. Thompson's will need to be applied at least every other year, but that's not unusual. Owning a deck or fence requires cleaning and sealant reapplication. Just a fact of life.

      Yes you need to pressure wash your fence first . You can rent one at Home Depot for about $50 . Or have someone do for you . Wait 5-7 days with
      No rain , then apply the Thompson water seal transparent application

    • @jaejona

    • @derekhelms825
      @derekhelms825  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      4Runn1nYota yes you will need to pressure wash it first if it is not stained but natural cedar . If it is natural cedar or pine then yes pressure wash , let dry for 5-7 days with no rain or sprinklers hitting it , and then apply the Thompson’s. If it is stained then pressure washing a 1-2 year old fence is optional but I wouldn’t recommend unless you plan on going back over with the same stain color rather then the Thompsons. The reason being is you don’t want to wash out the stain if your looking to just apply a sealer . I would recommend just a light wash with water hose and perhaps a broom or some type of brush to give it a little scrub as you do

    Good video. Thanks. Why do you need to wait 7-10 before applying to a new fence?

    • @derekhelms825
      @derekhelms825  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because the wood that comes from the lumber yard has usually been sitting in a stack and a lot of the pickets and 2x4s retain a lot of water in them while be stored at lumber yard . They are stacked in slabs of 500 causing the pickets in the middle of slab to still retain water . In short , you need to let the pickets dry so they will soak up more stain properly and your not trapping the water in the picket . You can usually tell bc the pickets are heavier and become much lighter in weight once dry.

      actually you need to wait a lot longer than 7-10 days unless you can verify the wood has been kiln dried. If not kiln dried then 2 months at least for a drying period. Also spraying alone isnt' the best method for sealing, rather spraying and then somebody pressing the product into the wood with a brush and or roller.

      No I did not . If your having trouble with it going theu the sprayer . Check you nozzle where it sprays out of . Sometimes there’s a piece of plastic from the factory stuck in there restricting the flow . Once punctured or removed you should be fine . Another comment had the same issue and this solved it for them as well . I used a razor blade on mine to remove the piece that was restricting the flow

    • @derekhelms825
      @derekhelms825  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this situation I wouldn’t say it’s better but it definitely won’t hurt . As long as you have a good coverage you should be ok . The good thing about this product is it’s a clear coat so you don’t have to worry about the wood changing color or not matching. All this will do Is enhance the natural color of the wood and bring it out more. It works like a clear coat on a car where the water will just bead and run off the pickets rather then absorb and stain the wood causing greying.

      So roughly 220 feet? To be honest I charge a very low price bc I want to assure the customer gets the application done as the fence I install will look better of course . I would charge my customer about 150-200 plus materials . But I’m sure you can get 3-400 plus materials or more. It’s not like stain which I would charge about .65-.75 a sq foot

      Michael Acosta yeah that’s about right including materials. 220x6x2(both sides of fence ) =2640 sq feet . Stain is not cheap . It runs about $130 for 5 gallons and you would need about 15-20 gallons for that size fence . But also there is a lot of liability with over spray , heavy winds , etc.. I always recommend my customers to go with the pre stained materials if they want the fence stained bc you will never get the results with pre stained material then you would by staining after the fact. Regardless if you stain or not I recommend applying Thompson water seal to either application

    GREAT video Derek. I'm going to have about 88 feet of con common redwood to cover soon. My concern is about the sprayer, yours looks like it's working just fine, but I'm hearing/seeing a lot of complaints that some 'new formula', Thompson uses, whatever that means, makes the spray become more of a stream. Still using that sprayer? I have a small 2 gallon sprayer that's similar to yours and I'd like to use that.

      If the cedar is fresh the longer you wait the faster it shrinks. The faster it shrinks creates warping. Warping creates cracks.. You can't do it with Thompson's now. It's too thick and won't spray. I ran out and bought a brand new sprayer after my other two didn't work thinking they were old and worn out. Still wouldn't spray. I contacted Thompson's and they said they knew it wouldn't spray despite the can saying it will. They changed their formula thanks to the EPA and that made it thicker. Wasted two hours yesterday trying to get it to work and then had to wash all the sprayers out. I'm taking 4 gallons back to Menards.

I recommend using a medium nap painting roller to grab up the excess that is still on there after a few hours.
