@@TheGoncas2 Yeah but not as weak as Apex or the other bad ports. Games like Doom and others are still enjoyable to an extent on Switch. In fact, there are games like Ori and Alien that still have great resolution.

I'm pretty sure they will. Since November Digital Foundry mostly do only videos of old games like Control, Dirt, Devil May Cry V, Flight Simulator and the list goes on.
The thing that bothers me about every panic button Port Is trying to mash AA into them, AA properly works and looks fine when resolutions are above 720p but below that it just looks bad, specially since these games are First person shooters, it looks blurry and I can't play these games without having headaches, at least give us the option to disable it
@@Poever they Will, the good thing about panic button Is that they constantly update the games they Work in, but still i would appreciate if the option to disable AA was implemented, none of their games have that making it still pretty hard to play them
On the question of whether this and similar challenging games "should" be ported to Switch, my opinion is that, yes, they should. Now I know the main reason Apex Legends on Switch exists is to capitalize on the Switch's huge player base, but for me it's all about the challenges that developers like Panic Button overcome when porting games to such a drastically lower-spec platform - these can lead to innovative solutions or further optimization than before. If I'm not mistaken, that was the case with Warframe, another Panic Button port on the Switch - I recall Digital Extremes (the original developers) saying that some of the optimizations Panic Button made for the Switch were also back-ported to the other console versions, increasing their performance as well. Additionally, maybe the answer to the "should these ports exist" question will be much different if a higher-spec, backward-compatible Switch is just around the corner (as many people seem to suggest).

Some people don't have any console other than the Switch and just want to play such a game regardless of how big the sacrifices on the graphics are. I don't have a Switch, but I understand who is in this situation because a few years ago I only had the Wii and DS as a console, even if the graphics downgrades were massive I had a lot of fun playing some games like Call of Duty: Black Ops/Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii. What is not playable for you can be playable for other people, for me if a game manages to keep 30fps a good part of the time, you can enjoy it well, so for me it is very good to see these ports on the Switch, if I didn't have a PS4 I would probably play without any problem.
@@MoonSarito I also have a very old pc which cant even play Call of Duty: Black Ops/Modern Warfare 3 at 30fps.However I am going to get a steam deck in 2023 which I am super exited for also I always liked mobile or watered down ports as I have a pretty good phone. In my terms if you can experience something be happy.
Have to say it remains an impressive sight to see such a game ported over to 2015 mobile hardware. The compromises are stark. I am immediately reminded of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for Xbox 360 and PS3 - Not only have those versions a similar look, they also have the same solid color textures and shading. So essentialy Apex Legends is like that. Except Apex Legends is a battle royale and BLOPS3 was a gimped multiplayer title on PS360. Impressive, nonethless. But Apex Legends shows we are hitting hard limits here.
If anything, it shows how handicapped the Switch is power-wise. This is why Nintendo needs to make an upgrade so that this game can be a lot nicer to play but now, nope this ain't it chief.
You can actually see the bullet shells on the Switch version. The issue is though that because it's 30 FPS you might only catch it at the top of the screen. You can see it in one frame at 10:54
Problem is, you won't know till you try. Now we got the answer and the only hope is a Switch PRO in the near future. The currrent model is great to bring decades of videogames, but hardly for what's coming next struggling with games like Apex.
@@darkrusie Switch Pro will definitely come.. Thing is they really kinda rushed into the bandwagon of Nintendo's success and forced this port. To be honest you can prototype a game and see for yourself first.. Apex Legends is just too much for the Switch.

@@shockvalue5086 I don't think Fortnite mobile got the same LOD, check some comparison video on YT. Moreover, 60 frames is possible on phones because they have more CPU cores, meanwhile Switch has only 3 usable cores out of 4 for gaming.
I was actually positively surprised when i played my first matches on Switch, i enjoyed it even tho (of course) its lagging every now and then, and the resolution is pretty low (especially handheld). But in the end, for me at least, its still really fun and thats what matters. But i wont say no to a Switch Pro down the line.
The biggest issue I had was the controls. I normally play on the PS4 and I feel like the joycons were a bigger reason not to play than the graphics. That and you can't use custom controls with them, so I could only do minimal adjustments for the controls.
I think the bullet casing effect is still there, its just the framerate is so low you only see it on screen for like 1 frame, if any. @10:54 you can see a bullet casing fly up the screen for like 1 frame.
Unfortunately, that still doesn't make it easier to render such a large play space, or the necessity to handle all the network information for all of these players.
It wouldn't help readability or playability much for the cost of re-doing graphics. Fundamentally, resolution is a sampling problem; sample too coarsely (read: resolution is too low) and whole details are lost, like players. Rendering a large play space with long sight lines is the problem, and also the essential game. IDK what they can actually do besides spot-patching slow / frequently called functions.
it wouldn't have made much of a difference. The biggest factors for these types of games (Big, open battle royales) are CPU and ram which is why dropping texture quality, anti-aliasing, shadow resolutions, etc by so much still doesn't allow the game to even consistently run at 30fps. There is only so much you can do to maximize CPU and RAM before you simply run out of horsepower.
at 10:54 you can actually see a casing on-screen in the Switch version, it just seems like the framerate is so low that you can almost never observe them flying out
Thats such a dumb thing to say when even if this video was 4k it would still factually look worse than how the game actually looks. Do you not know what compression is? Why are you even on digital foundry if you're so technically ignorant?
if anything it should have adopted more settings that most competitive players use. yes it won't look as good with shadows and the like off, but the DRS could be less aggressive or even better frame rate.
Listen to John's interview with panic button and Billy Khan. They explain why turning off AA is not only an incredibly stupid choice but its not even an option to consider
Maybe, but overall I doubt that they will improve things by much. If anything I'm surprised that they didn't talk about how the FOV is stuck at 70 while all the others can have it much higher and that can be a big disadvantage.
I see this as another "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" game on Switch. Anyone playing the switch version in a crossplay session will be at an incredible disadvantage, especially if this is the first time they are playing. Should've waited for the switch pro, instead
I've been playing a ton of the Switch version this week, propping the console up on my desk beside my PC. I don't have one that's nearly good enough to play the game, so this setup lets me quickly play a couple matches and then do some work. I've played the game on-and-off for about a year now, and played quite a bit in the lead-up to the Switch release. This week alone, only on the Switch, I've gotten my first and only 3 wins in the game, on any platform. Sure, that says something about my god-awful lack of skill, but it's a good testimony to why this version should exist.
I understand the drawbacks but I have been having a lot of fun with this port. 80+ kills on my Switch account, cross play; so for me, especially playing portable in bed it's been great! For those that hate you have the option to play elsewhere, let us Switch enthusiasts have our fun 🙂
No one is hating, they are comparing the game and discussing it. If YOU can't take the honest comments that it's trash then you go elsewhere. It's not hating to say it looks and play bad...because it does. I hate the game personally but I'm just here to see the hardware comparison as it's interesting. Don't take the comments so seriously. It looks and plays bad, it's just fact.
@@robincregan I was addressing the comments and yah I've seen lots of unnecessary hate online, doesn't take much to find it. Also, DF's analysis interests me as well, nowhere did they say trash, you did, and that's part of the hate I'm talking about. Yes, it looks bad and plays poorly compared to other consoles, my point is I'm having fun and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but others shouldn't diminish the port as "trash" like you did. If you can't handle other's opinions then that's your problem 🙂
I wouldn’t be able to play this game (or most shooters) on Switch. The only thing worth playing on Switch are the first party Nintendo games and select indie games.
It’s so insane to me that phones have been more powerful than the switch since the iPhone X and galaxy s9 in 2017, but the switch gets all of the ports instead. Compare emulation on both and you’ll easily see how weak the hardware is in comparison to phones
10:43 this it nitpicking a nitpick, but the switch version does still have ejected bullet casings (you can see one clearly in a frame around 10:54). it seems that the framerate is just so low that a lot of the time they don't even show up on screen (or perhaps their infrequency is a bug).
@@mn_0000 even if a single pixel is rendered, Nintendo switch owners will be like “its impressive, omg, I can’t believe how much the switch is capable”
I noticed this in the store when it came out. I downloaded it on my sons switch just to play a few rounds. Undocked it looked fine. I did not play it docked but it looked fine on his small screen.
No one's hating. It's impressive. But that doesn't mean it's good or needs to exist. Switch just isn't meant for a game like this with its extremely downclocked CPU and limited RAM. Apex relies mostly on CPU which Switch just doesn't have a lot of. As a result, you have a version of it where players are at an extreme disadvantage when playing with other console and especially PC players, it can't even keep a consistent 30fps (which stable 30fps is still bad for this type of game when other console players are playing 60fps and PC is playing like 60-144+fps) and its not even a native 720p most of the time in docked or handheld when other console and PC players are playing 1080p and 1440p. People will still have fun with it and I'm glad for those people, but this is a port that should've been left alone. If it was single-player, then none of this would be that big of a deal, but it's a multi-player battle royale so these things do affect the gameplay experience. It's impressive but still lacking.
Some publishers were so preoccupied with whether or not they should, they didn't stop to think if they could (nah, Panic Button will figure that out, right?)
poor panic button they throw these demanding games on them and tell them "just make it work" and PB has to trudge to port these games and after all that work some people will still complain, it's not their fault the switch is as strong as a ps3

Other wise if you are going to the Switch form those other places it's going to be a terrible experience and that's coming form my first hand experience. Going from 25 fps on Switch to 100+ fps on PC makes it feel like a real game changer. That's being said I do like how even on Switch that the game still feels like the game since "game" wise you are still more or less are going to have the same experience and this is from me putting a good number of hours Into all 4 versions of the game.

i kind of wish panic button would take these insane optimization skills to an original title on high end hardware.. if they can make games on switch look this good, i wonder what they could do with more power
I'm seriously mindblown right now. I understand how someone could get a similar viewpoint and character and gun in each version (to compare the videos)... But how do you get 100% identical play on the different consoles - same gunshots, same loot, same enemies etc.???
As I assume you saw later on the vid, they seem to get a non-switch console, join the same game, die and spectate the switch player via crossplay... simple and brilliant solution.
For being the only way to play this game portable it's okay, certainly there will be performance enhancements post-launch and maybe some of the extra details will resurface in time. We need a switch hardware revision.
This is why Switch Plus devs need to not ignore resolution. Everybody keeps saying "Idc about rez, just give me frames," but as we can see here, that low resolution KILLS the feeling of playing these games. $300 gets you a Series S...and that's gonna start to bite Nintendo in the butt
I don't think Nintendo cares honestly! They have a Switch Lite for $200 anyways. And besides, I think Nintendo takes pride knowing their console is playable anywhere on the go instead of forced to an outlet at all times!
@@livinlikeeli6785 Yeah, but when I spend my days playing games at 4K, 60 fps on my PS5, and then pop on my Switch and see sub 720p resolution at 30 fps, it is jarring. The gap is huge between these games. We desperately need 1080p minimum on handheld. In 2017, the gap wasn't too bad. 2021, the console space has changed and people are expecting 4K gaming. 1080p should be the handheld standard, and 1440p on the TV.
@@undisclosedsteve6361 I don't expect it honestly. I have a 1080p monitor I play games with and it looks great! Not to mention, we don't need high resolutions on a smaller screen. Especially when that screen will be a high quality OLED panel. 720p is fine!
@@livinlikeeli6785 Dude I played Xenoblade Chronicles, I played the Witcher, I played Outer Worlds, and DOOM, all handheld. That famous saying that "Handheld makes it look good," only goes so far. These games look like mush. Being "playable," isn't the same thing as being a joy to play. I think Nintendo would want these games to be a joy to play. Stardew Valley works on Switch handheld perfectly, but next year when the PS5/Xbox is pumping out more and more 3rd party support, those games are going to release, contingent on their visuals. EVERY release should look good enough on Switch, we shouldn't have to cross our fingers every release that it looks acceptable. Immortal:Fenyx Rising or whatever, Overwatch, The Witcher, Doom: Eternal, The Outer Worlds, the list goes on and on. Most people own Switch as a second console, and it looks ROUGH compared to consoles of yester-year. And Nintendo is getting left behind with resolutions that are theoretically going to be 16x lower than the 8K games that eventually start to drop on PS5 and Series X
@@undisclosedsteve6361 Personally, I'm not as judgemental on the graphics of a game. Many would feel the same, over 80 million people own the system. It passed the Xbox One in sales even after coming out nearly 4 years later. It's on track to passing the PS4! Clearly, the focus isn't the graphics for many but the games. And it goes without saying, Nintendo provides fantastic exclusive games. A Switch Pro seems inevitable but honestly, I am perfectly fine with my current Switch! And honestly, the consoles are probably not going to be running any games at 8K. Even some games exclusive to the PS5 can only get 4K 30fps. The Medium on Xbox Series X sometimes runs at 900p. It may be upscaled to 8K at some point, but not an actual 8K resolution. Plus, an 8K monitor or TV is extremely expensive. Very few people will be utilizing 8K screens for a few years at least!
Please DF, could you retest the game on other platforms. Performance got a lot worse over time with all the updates the game had and devs seem to ignore it. Base console versions run pretty bad for a lot of people and nowhere near the almost locked 60fps when you tested the game at launch (although some people claim it runs good so it seems to vary a bit). Pro and One X are okayish, but far from perfect. Only Series X/S and PS5 in backcompat deliver a locked 60fps.
@@PC-tan I mean you can play with an fps counter enabled and it says 59 most of the time (which is normal). It still can drop in heavy alpha effect scenes (gibby ult + bang smoke + getting EMPed by crypto), but they reduced fog particle counts in the last patch a bit so it might have even less impact now. But in general it runs very smooth for me on series x at 60fps, while on my One X I got stuttery 30-40fps in many gun fights in most dense locations, especially in the city on worlds edge.
@@danistar3446 that's what's weird since it does say 59 a vast majority of the time but it doesn't feel like that, sometime it feels even more chopy at times for some reason. I did do a restart on the XSX which did help quite a bit in making it much less choppy but still not as smooth as I would like for it to be. I was not sure if it's because of quick resume games that it's like that or something because after I restarted the system it still booted those games like normal which surprised me actually that it could even do that since this was not sleep mode but rather me going into the settings and restarting the thing.
Its a competitive game, i play this on low a 720p on PC. My PC have a CPU Ryzen 5 and a RTX card, so can handling well on ultra in 1080p. But, it's a competitive game, no graphic complexity is needed.
Honestly, from looking at the side-by-side footage, the graphics and resolution are okay on Switch. I don't share the opinion that it's "not recognisable", to the contrary I think it's surprisingly close actually. What's an absolute no-go though is the missing grass, that ruins it all.
I'd never thought that I would someday say that I want my jagged edges back again. TAA and other modern techniques are unbearable in such lower resolutions.
Nope. I think you're not realizing just how bad these games would look without taa. Its not even like comparing to ps2 games. Similar resolution but the massively increased geometric detail, specular highlights, and shaders would lead to an unbelievable mess of not just jagged edges but most of all shimmering literally everywhere These games were designed with TAA in mind and the whole package simply will not work without it. Not to mention in texture shimmering as well since these games don't have mip mapping since TAA takes care of it
I feel like the main compromise is not having a version of apex legends on the switch but rather trying to make it cross play. If they were to drop model detail on the characters and would drop the smoke and particle effects, I think the performance could be much better.

Have to say it remains an impressive sight to see such a game ported over to 2015 mobile hardware. The compromises are stark. Exacly

And honestly, the consoles are probably not going to be running any games at 8K. Even some games exclusive to the PS5 can only get 4K 30fps. The Medium on Xbox Series X sometimes runs at 900p.
Since i primarily play Apex on the PS4, is this worth a download if i want to play it over at a friend's house? Or should i just skip those 19 gigs?
I was waiting for this. Love the Switch content. So, that means Titanfall 1 can be on the Switch, right? Just port the X360 version..
It's a nice option for those who only have a Switch, especially if their friends also have them.
it would be the "only" option then
@@Usaji_ would you prefer to not have the option at all?
Definitely needs a couple more patches
Ive been waiting for this review for sooo long...
Defenitely not the best version, but I"m still glad that we can play this on the Switch.
2021: the source engine battle Royale has been ported to the Nintendo handheld
Nier Automata on the Microsoft store needs a video, I'm about half way though and it's much better than the Steam release.
Really?
Its a competitive game, i play this on low a 720p on PC. My PC have a CPU Ryzen 5 and a RTX card, so can handling well on ultra in 1080p. But, it's a competitive game, no graphic complexity is needed.
This is why people cant take esports seriously because of parity
How does lowering the resolution benefit you in any way?
@@Adam_Zielinski input latency is lowered, so chances are your shots are fired and recognised first.
@@Loundsify interesting. Never heard of that, may check it out
@@Adam_Zielinski pro CSGO player run in low settings.
apex legends legends?
i dont play this game but ill assume thats just a typo
Imagine if Valve still care about making games, most notably supporting TF2. That would definitely get a Switch port by this point.
TF2 would easily run on the Switch, 720p locked 60.
no grass rendering on switch, easier to spot the enemies :)
They should get rid of shadows too
The fact this runs at all reasonable on a System with 1Ghz Cortex A57, an ARM-CPU Design from 2012 is crazy.
It's almost like a completely different game.
Shows not every game is scalable.
Honestly, from looking at the side-by-side footage, the graphics and resolution are okay on Switch. I don't share the opinion that it's "not recognisable", to the contrary I think it's surprisingly close actually. What's an absolute no-go though is the missing grass, that ruins it all.
Exactly for some reason the Switch version of ports have not much or no grass. Dragon Quest 11 is a great example.
I'd never thought that I would someday say that I want my jagged edges back again. TAA and other modern techniques are unbearable in such lower resolutions.
I agree completely
Nope. I think you're not realizing just how bad these games would look without taa. Its not even like comparing to ps2 games. Similar resolution but the massively increased geometric detail, specular highlights, and shaders would lead to an unbelievable mess of not just jagged edges but most of all shimmering literally everywhere
These games were designed with TAA in mind and the whole package simply will not work without it. Not to mention in texture shimmering as well since these games don't have mip mapping since TAA takes care of it
@@HugoStiglitz88 so yeah that's why I did mention it. Wasn't the TAA alone the problem.
I feel like the main compromise is not having a version of apex legends on the switch but rather trying to make it cross play. If they were to drop model detail on the characters and would drop the smoke and particle effects, I think the performance could be much better.
